Good morning Boschong Subscribers, We looked back through old issues of the Bushong Bulletin and found the Bible record of John Bushong and Anna Stover. According to the Spring 2005 Bulletin, the Bible no longer exists but family pages of the Bible had been copied. We do not know whether these pages were photocopied or copied by hand as the Bulletin does not state that information. We also do not know the date that this Bible was published because that is not stated either, which for genealogical purposes is always important. Does anyone from this lineage actually have a copy of these pages? When examining an old Bible family history page for authenticity, you should look for the following: 1. The date the Bible was published. If the Bible is within a 50 year date range as the names that are noted in the Bible then it is probably authentic. That is why it is so important to see the front pages of any Bible for date of publication that is being used for genealogical purposes and photo copies made. DAR and SAR are very fussy about this. 2. Wording of entries. If the wording is modern then it is information that was added much later. Back in the early 1800's they made their entries very differently then we do today. 3. Are there different handwritings with the generations or is all handwriting the same for all entries? If there is different handwritings then it is probably authentic but if it is all one handwriting for every generation then beware. One more piece of information before I put the Bible record here. The spelling of the very early Bushong name in the old official records was never spelled the modern way. It was spelled Bosang, Buschong, Boushong and many other ways that men with accents would hear it pronounced and try to spell it. If you look back on the old Deeds that I posted to the List you will see what I am talking about. In the records of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Carrollton, Carroll County, Ohio is the following entry along with the others which I will put at the end of this post to show you the spelling used for this couple in church records. Petrus born 26 Jly 1827, bapt 16 Sep 1827, parents Jacob Buschong & wife Elisabeth. Sponsors at the baptism were Johannes Buschong and wife Anna. -------------------------- Take note that to me, the last name spelling below sends up a red flag for the time frame of early 1800's since the spelling and wording are way too modern. This was the Bible of Johannes Buschong and wife Anna Stover and the spelling should match that spelling with baptismal records. The last three girls in this Bible entry, we believe was added later since the word borne in the other entries is spelled born in the last three. Also we find it a little peculiar that Sarah Bushong's entries were not completed. ------------------------- BIBLE RECORD OF JOHN BUSHONG AND ANNA STOVER John Bushong, A son of Jacob Bushong and Eve was born October the 22nd in the year 1784 {NOTE: We are leary of this entry because of the spelling of his first name as John instead of Johannes and the spelling of the word born which should be borne to match the birth of their children since the parents were supposedly making these entries.
