Good Morning Boschong Subscribers, A couple of weeks ago, I received the Probate records for Sarah Herrington in the mail from Vigo County. Sometimes her last name is spelled with an e and sometimes an a in the same document. There is nothing in the Probate that points Sarah back to Rockingham County, Virginia, but as I have said before, this does NOT rule her out as being the daughter of Jacob Bushong and Juliana Weigel which I suspect she is. I will continue to pursue this. ----------------------- WHEN TERRE HAUTE WAS YOUNG A series of articles from the Terre Haute Tribune By A. R. Boschong Subscribers, It was pointed out to me that I had not included A. B. Mitchell in the List of Children of this couple at the end of the last post. Thanks for pointing out my incomplete research as I appreciate being able to share the rest. I just wasn't sure anyone was interested. When researching John Mitchell who married Sarah "Sally" Bushong I came across a family tree for the other John Mitchell that had been done by William Lloyd Mitchell of Enterprise, Alabama. From that site, here is his list of the children of the other John Mitchell who married Rosannah Beard along with a little of my own research to verify his material. There may be babies not yet accounted for that died as infants. If you google John Mitchell married Rosanna Beard the tree should come up for viewing. Please Make a note that I believe that this Mitchell family is part of the family of John Mitchell and Sarah "Sally" Bushong. These two John's might have been cousins. There is a DNA match with this group and a Thomas Mitchell so although these two John's were different men, they are definitely of the same ancestors. ------------------------------------------------ 1850 Federal Census: Ohio Chillicothe, Ross County Enumerated 31 July 1850 Page 47B Lines 19-22, HH 733/733 Rosana Mitchell 50/Female/$3000/PA Susan Mitchell 18/Female/OH John Mitchell 16/Male/Printer/OH Charles Mitchell 14/Male/OH --------------------------------------------------- 1860 Federal Census: Ohio Chillicothe, Ross County Page 75 Rossana Mitchell 63/Female/White/PA {Age 60} Susan D. Boschong Subscribers, I am re-posting this to the List, in light of the recent DNA testing results with the Mitchell DNA. This information needs to be considered in any further research to solve the Mitchell and Bushong puzzle. There were a lot of Mitchells in the Ross County area of Ohio around 1800 and on. Anyone of these Mitchell's could have had a death and their children placed in the Bushong household. There was a Robert Mitchell who came from Bourbon County, Kentucky around 1799 and bought Lot 144 in Chillicothe. He might be worth taking a look at since he came from Kentucky. Supposedly the John Mitchell that married Rosannah Beard came from Hampshire County, Virginia with a brother James. I have contacted the Ross County Ohio Genealogical Society for help to determine which Mitchell might have died and their child or children placed in a Bushong household. Plus I have requested that they look in Valentine Bushong and Lt. Edward Buchan who I suspect are the same person. I have also sent off a request to the Kentucky State Archives to get copies of the 1812 Chancery Suit for Nancy Summers VS John Summers along with the depositions to see what will be learned from them. ----------------- POST OF FEBRUARY 2013 - Reworked Boschong Subscribers, Tricky research and I now know why no one attempted to research this couple. There were two John Mitchells living in Ross County, Ohio at the same time and ages very nearly the same. At first I thought they might be the same person but after doing a lot of research, came to the conclusion that they are definitely two different John Mitchells. Both men married within months of each other in 1816 and died in the same time frame. One married Sarah "Sally" Bushong and the other married Rosanna Beard. By the 1850 census both wives, Sarah and Rosanna were widows. So here is what I believe to be information on John Mitchell who married Sarah "Sally" Bushong based on what I was able to find so far. -------------- SARAH "SALLY" BUSHONG Born: 1791, Mercer County, Virginia, d/o John Bushong and Janette Young Summers Died: Between 1850 and 1860, Ross County, Ohio Buried: Unknown cemetery, Ross County, Ohio Married: 8 March 1816, Ross County, Ohio to John Mitchell JOHN MITCHELL Born: Circa 1780s - 1790s Died: After 1840 and before August 1850 Buried: Unknown Cemetery, Ross County, Ohio -------------------------------------------- CHILDREN OF JOHN MITCHELL AND SARAH "SALLY" BUSHONG 3 known children and 2 unknown children as per 1830 and 1850 census records 1. I know he would if he could. Maybe down the road we can do another test on those with Bushongs genes but not carrying the name. That test though is extremely expensive now. Maybe they'll come down in price some day. We can only wish. As it is the $154.00 for our group testing seems like a lot! You may be right about some of the older Bushongs being buried in Akey and if cows have been walking through the cemetery, I'm sure the tombstone are well buried, broken or illegible. This happened in Powells Fort too where my late husband's great great great grandfather John Bushong is buried. This may be where the Edward Bushon is buried too. Also looking at a map of Logan County, there don't seem to be any big towns except Bellefontaine so the population of the county can't be too great. I will keep at it and hope to come up with a lot more. There are a couple of things to keep in mind. There is an old now defunct cemetery just south of the "new" North Greenfield cemetery, called Akey. Several of the McCrary family are buried there and possibly James Bushong, husband of Nancy McCrary Bushong. The cemetery is now a part of a cow pasture after the farmer who bought it tore out the fence . Another thing to consider is the fact that the present North Greenfield cemetery is not in North Greenfield at all but rather down the road a piece. A good majority of the graves and stones in the older section of the cemetery were MOVED from the ORIGINAL North Greenfield cemetery that was across from the Methodist church that is ACTUALLY located in North Greenfield. I have never gotten a positive answer as to why it was moved, though it could be the fact that the tract of land floods from time to time. So with that in mind, how many graves and stones were either not moved or were overlooked. Cemetery relocation has never been an exact science. James Bushong could possibly be located there also. -----Original Message----- From: boschong-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:boschong-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Russell Bushong Sent: Wednesday, April 03, 2013 5:08 PM To: boschong@rootsweb.com Subject: [BOSCHONG] Delilah Bushong, d/o James Bushong & Nancy McCrary - And other ramblings Boschong Subscribers, This posts is about Delilah Bushong and a few of my thoughts on why a lot more research has to be done with these particular Ohio Bushongs. Are there obits on any of these people that can be shared on this List? The reason I ask is because I am looking at an old family tree that was given to me back in 2000 at the first Bushong reunion and in this report it names Angeline, Robert, Thomas and James M. as children of Delilah. So far I have not found evidence to substantiate that but I'll keep looking. As far as I can tell the three children in the 1850 census are her Bushong children and then she had no children with Henry Derflinger since she was 46 years old when she married him. These two James are not the same person as one is a Bushong & one is a Derflinger. James Bushong was born 1841 James M. Derflinger was born 1852 ------------ James Bushong married Lucinda Hatcher. They named one of their sons Edward John Bushong and I believe that this naming was because of Lt. Edward W. or V. Bushong. Only more research and time will tell whether this is correct. Edward John Bushong married Turia laura Clapsaddle and theirs was an interesting marriage which I won't go into right now. Some day down the road. -------------- FIRST CLUE: The 1840 census was my first clue when I found 3 separate Bushong households in Logan County. There is a John Bushong living in Bokes Creek Township and that has to be the one married to Mary, then there is the widow of James, Nancy Bushong and her children and then there is another Bushong household with the first name so illegible you can't read it as shown below. --------------------- 1840 Federal Census: Ohio Perry Township, Logan County NANCY BUSHONG 1 male 10 and under 15 years of age {Son of Nancy - Milton Bushong} 1 male 15 and under 20 years of age {Son of Nancy and James - Jacob Bushong} 1 female 20 and under 30 years of age {Daughter of Nancy and James - Delilah Bushong} 1 female 40 and under 50 years of age {Head of Household widow Nancy McCrary Bushong} Daughter Jemina Bushong married in 1837 to David Endsley so she is not shown in the 1840 Bushong household. --------------------- 1840 Federal Census: Ohio Bokes Creek Township, Logan County JOHN BUSHONG 1 male under 5 yrs of age {Unknown} 1 male 20 and under 30 years of age {Head of Household John Bushong} 1 female 15 and under 20 years of age {Wife Mary Bushong} Note: Did this couple have a daughter named Nancy Margaret Bushong born circa 1844 who married Michael O' Brien? Possibly. ----------------------- ILLEGIBLE BUSHONG Bokes Creek Township, Logan County 1 male under 5 years of age 1 male 30 and under 40 years of age 1 female under 5 years of age 2 females 10 and under 15 years of age 1 female 30 and under 40 years of age ------------------------------ SECOND CLUE: Then checking the cemetery record for North Greenfield Cemetery where a lot of the family was buried was the second clue and one that was missed by other researchers. I found James Bushong died 15 August 184--- son of John and Mary Bushong. So who is this John and Mary? There are a lot of broken and illegible tombstones in this cemetery so there are probably more Bushong buried here then are presently recorded. --------------------------- THIRD CLUE: The sloppy work done by the Clerk of the Court of Logan County for marriage licenses and returns with I am sure are missing marriages. I found the marriage application for Nathaniel Moore and Nancy Jane Bushong. They applied for the license 2 December 1856. It looks like who ever married them, did not return the marriage or it was never recorded by the Clerk but I am pretty sure they did get married since they are living together and have children together. It is possible that the Probate Judge married them the same day that he issued the license, thus no marriage return. I believe that Nancy Jane Bushong Moore died shortly after the birth of the last child Nathaniel Moore Jr. The reason I say that is because that son is living with a Peterson family in the 1880 census as a 10 year old. Sometime when a wife died shortly after giving birth, the husband couldn't stand to have the baby around since it was a reminder of his loss of his wife and sometimes he blamed the baby for the loss of his wife. Silly but that's the way some thought back then. They usually looked around for another family with a nursing mother to take the baby in and raised it. Possibly that is the case here. However there was an outbreak of small pox in the early 1870s in that area so it is also possible that she died from that disease. Nathaniel Moore and Nancy Jane Bushong had 3 children: Kendall, Samuel and Nathaniel Moore Jr.. From what I can see, after the death of the mother Nancy Jane Bushong, the children were pretty much on their own as soon as they were old enough to fiend for themselves as shown in the census records. She is probably buried in the North Greenfield Cemetery with the rest of the Bushongs. ---------------------- DELILAH BUSHONG Born: Circa 1814, Logan County, Ohio. d/o James Bushong and Nancy McCrary Died: January 1879, Logan County, Ohio Married Twice: M/1: Circa 1840 - 1841 to Unknown Bushong, could be a James or John 3 children from this marriage: James, Nancy Jane and Thomas M. Boschong Subscribers, Back in January 2005 and then again in May 2012 I posted about Elizabeth Bushon. I have made some progress and here are a few clues that possibly will help with her identity. I'm sorry if this seems disjointed but I wanted to get all the information posted that I had found. -------------------- In my January 2005 post was the following: CHRONICLES OF THE SCOTCH IRISH SETTLEMENT IN VIRGINIA COURT RECORDS OF AUGUSTA COUNTY, VIRGINIA 1745-1800 By Lynn Chalkley, 1912, in 3 volumes: Volume I, page 51, taken from the Augusta County Court Order Book "21 May 1752: Elizabeth Bushon, an orphan, bound to Ro. McClenachan" -------------------------- At some point long ago, while researching the Pennsylvania Bushongs, I remember reading something in the History of Berks County about Jacob Bushong being the Head of the Berks County Bushong family and that he was a member or supporter of the Ephrata Cloister. Also in this Cloister was William Dischong and Dietrich Dischong and wife Hannah with a daughter named Hannah. The lived in Earl Township in Lancaster County, PA. There are entries in a book kept at the Cloister so that is where I found these names along with some other familiar names. I believe that the Elizabeth Bushon that I have posted about before is somehow connected to this Cloister after reading a history of southern part of Virginia which was at that time Augusta County but became Pulaski, Montgomery, Wythe, Botetourt, Fincastle (dissolved) and others. Here is a little background to digest and my reasoning on this premise. --------------------------- EPHRATA CLOISTER This was a religious group who had been persecuted in Europe. The founder of this group was Conrad Beissell who was born in 1691 and immigrated into Boston harbor in 1720 and then made his way to William Penn's colony. He broke from the Brethren church in 1728, came back and then broke away again in 1732 when he started his religious group. In 1732, Beissel desired to create a retreat founded on his personal beliefs of Saturday as the Sabbath and celibacy for members, along with a strict religious discipline. A small community of followers joined him at Ephrata. Approximately eighty of the group were known as the “Brothers” and “Sisters” and practiced the rigid rules of the cloister. An additional support group, called the “Householders” were families who farmed or worked at the retreat and joined the group for worship. The last surviving member of this religious order died by 1813 but I recently read that the last surviving descendant of the membership of this Cloister, a woman, died in Pennsylvania this year at a very old age. The modern day 21st century remnants of this group are Amish, Mennonite, Morovians and Brethren. So someone from the Bushong family went down to Virginia and died there circa 1752 leaving a young daughter named Elizabeth Bushon. ---------------------------- This young girl Elizabeth and her family would have had to be in Virginia by very early 1750s with a group from Pennsylvania for this court record to take place. I wasn't sure where they lived since it wasn't that clear in the Court Record but while reading some history of New River which encompasses the area of Montgomery, Pulaski, Botetourt, Wythe, etc counties, I found some history about the Indian Wars of the 1760s and believe that her family must have been killed by Indians which spurred the Indian Wars of the 1760s down in the southern part of Virginia. Since Elizabeth Bushon was an orphan by 1752 as shown in the Augusta County court records, I believe her family might have been part of the Dunkards from Pennsylvania that went down to Virginia. This group included Brethren, Mennonites and Quakers. If you get a map of Virginia and locate Claytor Lake which is in present day Pulaski County you will see Highway 11. My late husband and I traveled this highway many times when he wanted a break from the Interstate. Highway 11 was the Wilderness Road and now parallels Interstate 81 down through the State of Virginia. The route 11 of the old, through the years, has been improved and changed. From Claytor Lake the highway runs to Dublin. At one time there was a turn in the road that lead over to Dunkard's Bottom. Dunkard's Bottom was an early Dunkard settlement mentioned in the early Augusta County Court records. These Dunkards came down from Pennsylvania in the 1740s and settled. The area was wild and overrun with Indians. During the 1760s an Indian War was fought and Dunkard's Bottom was the military outpost for the military. The river was dammed and now the area in Lake Claytor. New River Dunkard settlement was made in Virginia on the New River. the location is a few dozen miles from Christiansburg--Pulaski area in south west Va. The actual settlement is now buried under Claytor Lake, a state Park. The settlement was small, including a dozen or so people from the Ephrata Cloisters in Lancaster Co., Pa. The Cloister was a religious sect which broke away from the German Baptist Brethren group founded by Alexander Mack in Germany in 1708. The monastic community proselyted many Brethren and people from other religious groups. They tried to create new branches in Virginia, at what is now Strasburg in Shenandoah Co., Va. and at New River, and also at Dunkard Bottom near Kingwood in present Preston Co. Va. between the years 1745 and 1755. The Indians wiped out or scared away the New River settlement and the Preston County settlements. Alexander Mack, Jr. was one of the monastics at New River, ;but he soon returned to Pa. There were several Millers, as well as others. -------------------------------- To read more about this area where early Bushongs lived I suggest reading the following books: THE SAINT ADVENTURES OF THE VIRGINIA FRONTIER By Klaus Wust AND NEW RIVER EARLY SETTLEMENT By Patricia Givens Johnson -------------------- Researched and Submitted by Gloria Neiger Bushong
Boschong Subscribers, This posts is about Delilah Bushong and a few of my thoughts on why a lot more research has to be done with these particular Ohio Bushongs. Boschong Subscribers, If this research is not correct, it can be changed at a later date but wanted to share what I have so far. Mark asked me to do some research on Nancy Jane Bushong, d/o of Delilah Bushong. Delilah Bushong was the daughter of James and Nancy (McCrary) Bushong and half sister to Milton Bushong. Nancy Jane Bushong married Nathaniel Moore. This has been very interesting research and I do believe there is a lot more to this family then meets the eye. I believe researchers thought that because they found Delilah Bushong in the 1850 census with her maiden name of Bushong, that those 3 children James, Nancy Jane and Thomas were illegitimate. Maybe they were and maybe they weren't. I'll bet that Bushong was not only her maiden name but also her married name. This is possibly a case of one Bushong marrying another Bushong where the wife's maiden name never changed because it was Bushong! Or none of these children are hers and she just adopted them or they were placed in her household to raise. More research will tell in the Guardianship records. For the moment, I'm going with she was married to another Bushong and will change it with any new evidence to prove otherwise. Whoever was the Clerk of the Court back then, did a really sloppy job of keeping the records as witnessed by looking at the microfilmed records of the marriage licenses and returns for Logan County so we may never find the marriage record. And for the moment, the mystery will remain as to who might be John and Mary Bushong with son James, just like the mystery of Lydia Bushon and her father Edward W. Bushon. For all we know maybe Edward W. was really Edward Valentine as in the missing Valentine Bushong who disappears in the early 1800s? ------------------------- NANCY JANE BUSHONG Born: Circa 1845, Ohio, d/o Delilah Bushong and possibly a James or John Bushong Died: Between June 1870 and April 1876 Burial: Unknown but possibly North Greenfield Cemetery. Boschong Subscribers, Here is an interesting thought. Is is possible that the missing Valentine Bushong could be Lt. Edward W. Buchan of the War of 1812? Possibly that W was really a V as handwriting back then was hard to read. Maybe Valentine was disgusted with the way things were going with his life in Ohio, went to Canada, signed up with the Brits, and then after being a prisoner of War came back to Ohio with Joseph Haines who was also a soldier in the War of 1812. Just a thought and would certainly explain a lot. Gloria
I shall contact her and ask. -----Original Message----- From: boschong-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:boschong-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Russell Bushong Sent: Tuesday, April 02, 2013 5:24 PM To: boschong@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [BOSCHONG] How does the family of Delilah Bushong and Lt. Edward Bushaw/Buchan/Bushon of War of 1812 connect? Good Morning Boschong Subscribers, Back in March 2007, I posted some information about Lydia Bushon who married Christopher Cline. The question of lineage for Lydia Bushon has yet to be addressed and answered. While researching Delilah Bushong and her daughter Nancy Jane Bushong, I suddenly realized that in the 1870 census Delilah and her family and Christoper Cline, the husband of Lydia Bushon deceased, and his new wife Lucinda, are living as neighbors! Soooo what is the connection to these two families since Lydia Bushon was reported in the HISTORY OF LOGAN COUNTY to be the daughter of the Edward Bushaw/Buchan/Bushon, a Frenchman on a British ship in the War of 1812. I'm pretty sure that the misspelling of the Bushon name was due possibly to the fact that the information was being given by a Cline descendant who did not know how to spell Lydia's last name. His name on the account of Admiral Perry was spelled Lt. Edward W. Buchan and of course, we all know that an o can look like an a and an s like a c. {Buchon?} ------------------------ FACT: Lydia Bushon married Christopher Cline 15 Mar 1836 in Logan County, Ohio. The father of Lida Bushaw {Bushon} was a Frenchman, and was taken prisoner by the Americans at Perry's victory on Lake Erie. He was a sailor on a British ship, and when the Americans jumped on board his vessel, and demanded his sword and pistols, Bushaw {Bushon} stuck the point of his sword downward in the deck, broke it in three pieces, and threw his pistols overboard. He finally espoused the American cause, and died at Chillicothe. Lida came to this county with relatives." ------------- Now the above account in the history of Logan county cannot be totally ignored since it is quite possible that Lida (Lydia) Bushon's father could have served in the War of 1812. We know that there was a Edward W. Buchan mentioned by Perry that served and he was on the side of the British during this battle. Many men from Canada served for the British and many were French from Quebec area. So did this Edward leave the States to go to Quebec to serve during the War and then return to the States and somehow his daughter made it to Logan County Ohio with other relatives?
