    3. PART 1 OF 3 ---------------- Good Morning Boschong Subscribers, Here is a silly piece of trivia: How many of you know that the central area of Texas is known as Hill country. That's how the Texans refer to it. I learned that from Linda Gale Hill whose family I am posting about who came from Kerr County in Hill country. -------------- I have posted too much on this family to list them all but See BOSCHONG Archives for January 2005, August 2005, April 2007, June 2007 and September 2009 to name a few. This is the lineage going back to Luther David Bushong who ran away from home in Virginia, making his way to Texas, and settling and kept a Journal which I have posted long ago. -------------- I called the library in El Paso and ordered the obits for Silas E. Bushong and wife Rose and they arrived yesterday. For those of you who are wondering why Silas E. Bushong died in San Francisco instead of El Paso, it is because he was a conductor on the railroad that traveled from El Paso to San Francisco and was separated from his wife Rose. He was living in San Francisco with his daughter Lola Maloney at the time of his death and when he was in El Paso stayed at the Milner Hotel. You will notice that his obit does not say where he died nor does it mention his wife and children. --------------- LINEAGE: Henry Bushong and Barbara Lohr Henry Bushong and Betsy Brew Isaac A. 3. Forgot I had posted this newspaper article about H. R. Bushong of Illinois back in July 2012. ----------------- The Weekly Journal-Miner Prescott, Arizona Wednesday Morning, 4 June 1913 Page 2, Column 5 & 6 KILLED BY FALLING FROM WAGON SEAT IKE PATRICK, FOUNDER OF THE TOWN OF CROWN KING, MEETS DEATH IN AN ACCIDENT Telephone advices from Crown King yesterday afternoon, brought the sad news of the accidental death of Ike Patrick, near the old Tiger mine earlier in the day. Brief particulars of this pioneer's untimely end were to the effect that he was thrown from his seat in a freight, and falling into a steep ravine where many big boulders were lying, he struck on his head and death was instantaneous, the skull being crushed in. The accident was due to the approach of a pack train, driven by Lawton Champie, the mules of the freight team becoming frightened, when they started to turn around, which threw the wagon to the side, Mr. Patrick being thrown off the seat with fatal results. H. R. BUSHON was driving the mules for F. E. Blount, an engineer of the government, who is make a survey of all that region of the Bradshaw Mountains. The team was bringing in supplies from Minnehaha Flats, and reaching the spring by the roadside, MR. BUSHON alighted to give the animals water, when the pack train unexpectedly came in sight. Mr. Patrick boarded the wagon at the starting point and was again to locate at Crown King, bringing over his camp equipment from Minnehaha Flats. A coroner's jury was impaneled by Judge Marks, and death from accidental causes was the verdict, and without attacking blame to anyone. There was no better resident of the Bradshaw country who was better known than the deceased. He had been in that section mining for over forty years and enjoyed a splendid name among all. He founded the town of Crown King and assisted materially in bringing the mineral possibilities of that field to the front. The remains were brought to the camp and will be laid away today, many miners volunteering to care for the remains in the absence of an undertaker. The deceased was aged about 72 years and was a native of Maine. The death of Mr. Patrick is the third one of prominent residents of Crown King in the past two months, Ben Bishop and "Bob" Dougherty passing away during that time. ----------------- Researched and Submitted by Gloria Neiger Bushong

At that time, I had no idea who this guy was. Tonight while searching the census for someone totally unrelated to this post, I found H. R. "Jake" Garmon John Morris Garmon ----------------- EL PASO, Texas - TV News A man was struck and killed by a vehicle while crossing a street, police said. Police have identified the man as 72-year-old John Garmon, a former El Paso media personality. Garmon is remembered as a KVIA newsman, who worked at the station in the '80s. ABC-7's Round the Clock news team saw special traffic investigators searching the scene in efforts to find out what happened. Police said just before 8 p.m. Saturday evening Garmon was crossing Edgemere Boulevard near Ivanhoe Drive. It appears a car traveling west on Edgemere wasn't able to stop in time and hit Garmon, officials said. The car did remain at the scene while emergency personnel arrived. According to police, Garmon was taken to Del Sol Medical center, where he later died. As of Sunday morning, no charges had been filed against the driver. "There is not a crosswalk in that area, but the pedestrian was crossing at an intersection," El Paso Police Department spokesman Javier Sambrano said. Police said they are looking into whether speed or alcohol were factors. ----------------- JOHN MORRIS GARMON EL PASO, Texas A memorial celebration of the life of John Morris Garmon, lifelong El Pasoan and longtime broadcast journalist, will be held this Saturday, 2 February 2013 at 11:00 A.M. at Western Hills United Methodist Church (524 Thunderbird Dr.) in El Paso. John was the son of the late Jake and Ella Mae Garmon of El Paso and is survived by a sister, Gale Hill, of Seminole, Oklahoma, and brother Rev. Tom Garmon, of Albuquerque, New Mexico. John was preceded in death by an older brother, Bob R. Garmon. Surviving children include John David Garmon of Highland, California, Michael Garmon of Dallas, Texas, Stephen Garmon and Jackie Taylor of El Paso and Chris Taylor of Roswell, New Mexico. John enjoyed a whole host of grandchildren, nieces, nephews and in-laws. He was a 1958 graduate of Austin High School and attended Texas Western College. John began his broadcasting career in 1962 at the age of 22 when he was hired by News Director Dick Glancey at the original KELP radio station on Delta Street. His four decade career in news took him to all three major network affiliates in town (KELP/KVIA TV, KTSM TV and KDBC TV). John’s affable personality and ability to make everyone his friend stood him well as colleagues will remember John as the one person who always knew who to contact to get the story first. As a teenager, John led a local band (Johnny Garmon and the Shadows). Those were the days of a budding Elvis Presley and Ricky Nelson. His music continued throughout his life and you could often find a newer version of his band playing what he called “Rock-a-Billy” at places like Great American Land and Cattle. In the 1960’s John was “The Voice of the Miners” doing play-by-play broadcasts of Miner football on KTSM radio with Ted Bender providing color commentary. He also served as the in-house announcer of Miner basketball in the days when the late Don Haskins led UTEP’s basketball fortunes. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in John’s memory may be made to either the American Diabetes Association or the El Paso Humane Society. --------------------- Researched and Submitted by Gloria Neiger Bushong

Feldman leased the photographic studio of John Chester Bushong in El Paso, Texas for 1 year while Bushong went east to take a post graduate course in photography. On Bushong's return, the two of them formed a partnership called BUSHONG AND FELDMAN. They were in business together for 4 years at which time when Mr. Feldman bought out Bushong and Bushong returned to Massachusetts for a wider field of activities. ------------------- The El Paso Daily Herald Thursday, 19 August 1897 Page 4, Column 5 A PILGRIM'S RETURN Mr. Bushong returned this morning via the T. & P. {Texas and Pacific Railroad}, from the Panhandle, where he has been rusticating and enjoying himself for the last two weeks. He started out, as per schedule, from Colorado City, across the country to Plainview, 179 miles, and made it in three days. But on the return, Mr. Bushong found it was seventeen miles shorter to strike Big Springs, and he tried it. He did make 102 miles the first day; but then came grief and affliction, trails and tribulations. He got mired in a slue of despond that he read of in Bunyan's Pilgrim's Progress when a kid, and after revolving many things in his mind as to how he should get out, chanced to see something that looked like a rope dangling near him. Mr. Bushong laid hold of the same and found it to be a mule's tail. He held on like grim death to a pole darkie, and was yanked out of the mud by the excited animal along with is wheel. Mr. Bushong thanked the mule kindly and tried to continue on the turf. But he got about 400 punctures , or less in three minutes from the mosquite thorns. But with rare presences of mind, he did not pull the thorns out of his tire, but cut them off "close to the hub" with a razor and went on. The thorns staid in the rubber and did not come out, so the tires did not collapse. Mr. Bushong camped out in the brush over night, and being short of matches, kindled a fire by the light of his countenance, and by rubbing two sticks together till the flame came. He shot several cotton tail rabbits, skinned the same with the deftness of a chef and broiled the flesh. Unfortunately he had no butter. The skunks and prairie dogs stole it all the first night. Mr. Bushong got out of water. But as the dew fell copiously by night, he shook moisture out of the greasewood into his hat and poured it into his canteen until it was full. Mr. Bushong has photographed all of his prairie experiences, in his mind, and will reproduce the same through the camera for the delectation of his many friends. He reached Big Springs right side up with care, and slept all the way in. His riding covered 405 miles, "turnstille count." ---------------------- The El Paso Herald El Paso, Texas 10 August 1898 Published in column titled: 14 YEARS AGO TODAY - 10 August 1912, Page 6, Column 6 Among the arrivals on the Texas and Pacific this morning was John Chester Bushong whose pictures have won much fame for himself and El Paso. ------------------- Researched and Submitted by Gloria Neiger Bushong

    3. John, I also thank you for the detailed summary. I had previously decided to do the DNA matching through Ancestry.com. I'm just starting to go through my matches. The great computer in the sky compares family trees and provides hints when there is both a DNA match and a common ancestor in the published trees. Most matches have been on my maternal side, but today I had my first match from another female decedent of John Bushong and Elizabeth Sprenckel. At this point I don't think the mitochondrial DNA has any value for the Bushong Family project. Since I am participating in the Ancestry.com DNA, I think I will pass on the Family Tree DNA at this time. If any of the list members are also participating on Ancestry.com, my tree is Bushong-Beasley. I am also doing the www.23andme.com DNA, but haven't gotten a report. The third type of test (restricted to males) that familytreednadoes is the Y-chromosome, this is the test that some of the males with the Bushong last name have taken part in. If you are interested in taking a DNA test, I would suggest that you read up on what each might give you in results, they may or may not answer the questions that you have. See the following Q&A from familytreedna http://www.familytreedna.com/faq/answers.aspx?id=8#519 Beware that the results of the different types of tests can not be compared with each other, but only compared with results of folks taking the same type of test. The MtDNA test DNA that is passed from mother to child, so it can be used to determine whether someone might be related on the all female ancestral line. If you have close matches with this test, the person matching will more than likely have a different last name than you and you'll have to use genealogical research to determine how you are related. The Y-chromosome DNA testing, test markers on the Y-chromosome that is passed from father to son. So this test can be used to see if you are related to someone else on the all male ancestral line. If you have a close match with someone else taking this test, more than likely you'll share the same last name. If you don't share the same last name it could be because a son was adopted, a mother had an affair, the family changed last names for some reason, etc. I believe the Autosomal DNA testing is relatively newer, it samples markers from the other 22 chromosome pairs which can come from either parents. This being newer I'm not sure how many people of have taken this test yet. This test might help locate relatives from anywhere in your familytree, though you and the other person will have to figure out how you are related through traditional genealogical research. I believe this is the same type of test that ancestryDNA is now pushing for $99 a test. I don't know how the autosomal DNA test from AncestryDNA compares with familytreeDNA'ssame test. http://dna.ancestry.com/ None of these test will tell you exactly how you are related to someone, but only the probability that you are related within so many generations or not related at all. Actually I think they do a better job at the later. 3. Ann! You are right. Thanks so much. I just went to the site and compared the DNA and Mark is correct, His DNA matches the John Sisk from Virginia born 1737 and died 1806 in North Carolina. Lists two sons: Jesse and Isaac. Obviously this John Sisk had brothers who had sons that included the family of John C. and Morgan Sisk in Ohio.I'm not sure about the Maryland Sisks as they are not included in this testing. 3. I know for a fact that there is a 12 loci match to Sisk. At first they seemed interested, then went quiet. -----Original Message----- From: boschong-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:boschong-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Russell Bushong Sent: Sunday, April 21, 2013 7:24 PM To: boschong@rootsweb.com Subject: [BOSCHONG] Part 1 - Tracking down the biological father of Milton Bushong, born 1826, Logan County, Ohio PART 1 OF 3 ---------------------- Good Evening Boschong Subscribers, Some time ago I saw a post to the Bushong GenForum from Christina Bushong who stated that the biological father of Milton Bushong was a Sisk. After comparing the Bushong DNA with a descendant of Milton Bushong, we already know that the descendant's DNA does not match the DNA of the Bushongs nor does it match those of the Mitchells who now call themselves Bushongs.I contacted the Administrator of the Sisk DNA Project to see if I could send him DNA to compare but he has been totally uncooperative which is a real shame. If this does not interest you, you can just delete it. But this research is important to someone and I have seen very little on the Sisks. If there are mistakes, please let me know and I will correct them. I decided to do some research to see, among the Sisks, who could be a possible fit as a candidate. Although I don't know for sure, since there is no slam dunk proof as yet, after studying the various Sisk candidates, weighing all the evidence, I am leaning towards Morgan Sisk as the possible father since he is the only one of these men that was actually living in Logan County, Ohio where Milton Bushong was conceived and because of the Virginia connections. But without DNA comparison with the Sisk project, I cannot say for sure that Milton Bushong was even a Sisk by blood. We have two Sisks families in the early 1800s, one in Maryland and one in Virginia that came to Ohio between 1820 and 1830. The Maryland Sisks came from Dorchester County, Virginia and settled in Pickaway County, Ohio. The Virginia Sisks came from Madison County, Virginia and settled in Knox County, Ohio and then moved into Logan County. You would think that, of course, it has to be the Maryland Sisks as Pickaway is closer to Ross county. But remember at time of conception, Nancy Bushong was living in Logan County not Ross so both Pickaway and Knox county cannot be ruled out and those strong Virginia connections were there with Morgan Sisk being from the Virginia line. So such strong connection with the Maryland Sisks. ------------------------------ Back in August 2009 I posted about a newspaper article I had found: Marysville Tribune (Ohio) 28 May 1879 Page 4, Column 3 PROBATE NOTICE UNION COUNTY OHIO Milton Bushong, guardian of John O. Forrey. William O. Forrey and Martha J. Forrey" JOHN B. COATS Probate Judge May 7, 1879 At the time of posting this, I thought this Milton was the son of Jacob and Rebecca Bushong but in June 2012 changed my mind as new evidence came to light. This article referred to Milton Bushong son of Nancy Bushong. As I have said, the Virginia connections were strong and if you look back to where the Sisks came from, Madison County, VA you will see that Madison County. VA was formed from Culpeper County. VA where Bushong lived which takes us back to Rockingham/Shenandoah County. VA which takes us to Page County, VA where, low and behold, Sisks and Forrey families are found very early on and then traveled to Ohio. 1836 Deed - William Bushong and wife Catharine of Carroll County, OH to Thomas Morrison of KNOX County, Ohio. I have contacted Mark Bushong and we are working together to see it is plausible that Morgan Sisk is the father of Milton Bushong as he was leaning towards the Maryland Sisks. ------------------- MY SISK RESEARCH There are several candidates that I looked at as possible father of Milton Bushong born 1826. 1. John C. Sisk born 1792, Virginia and married Madison County, VA to Mary "Polly" Berry, died Perry County, Ohio 1. John Sisk, born circa 1794, Maryland, married, Pickaway County, OH to Verlinda Purdum, died 27 October 1865, Pickaway County, Ohio 3. David Sisk born 1800, Maryland married Pickaway County, OH to Lillie White Mills, died 2 March 1875 in Pickaway County, Ohio 4. Elizabeth Sisk, born circa 1791, Maryland - either a widow or spinster, died 9 April 1883 in Pickaway County, Ohio 5. *Nancy Six (Sisk?) intended to marry George Hewitt 21 February 1825 in Athens County, Ohio. Marriage not returned. *Since mother's maiden name was Sisk, this could not be mother of Milton Bushong since we are working with hypothetical fraternal DNA. I researched each one of these candidates and slowly eliminated them based on various reasons, some explained here. I don't intend to put all that extensive research on this List, since this post is already too long and broken down into 3 parts. 1. John C. Sisk - Solid marriage. Wife was still alive and living with her husband at time of Milton's birth.{Definite brother of Morgan} - Living in Washington County, Ohio with Moore and Cline neighbors. 2. John Sisk - Solid marriage. Wife was still alive and living with husband at time of Milton's birth. 3. David Sisk - Solid marriage. Wife was still alive and living with husband at time of Milton's birth. 4. Elizabeth Sisk - If she was a widow then she could be a candidate but why give the child away when she had solid family support. 5. *Nancy Six (Sisk?) - This is weird because an intended marriage with George Hewitt was not returned and she is not in the 1850 census with a husband George Hewitt. However there is a Nancy Hewitt living with an Aaron Hewitt in the 1850 census in Athens County but she was born in Pennsylvania. Could not be mother of Milton since the DNA would match a Hewitt not a Sisk. ------------------------------------ So where does that leave us with this research? MORGAN SISK ------------------------------------- I came to candidate #6, which to me is the most likely father of Milton Bushong for many reasons. Wandering Sisk, unattached with wife dead and with relatives nearby in Logan County at the time of Milton's conception, plus Morgan in later life moves to Logan County after Milton Bsuhong becomes an adult. To be nearer to his natural biological son? #6 - MORGAN SISK Born: Circa 1793, Virginia Died: Between 1870 and 1880, Logan County, Ohio Buried: Unknown Cemetery, Ohio Married: Bond posted 11 January 1815, Madison County, Virginia to Frances "Fanny" Berry ------------------------------------ MADISON COUNTY VIRGINIA BONDS Layton Sisk to Rhody Jenkins - 28 March 1800 {Twice widowed Rhoda found living in 1850 with brother-in-law Morgan Sisk} John C. Sisk to Polly Berry - 9 December 1813 Morgan Sisk to Fannie Berry - 11 January 1815 -------------------------------------------- Morgan Sisk married Frances "Fanny" Berry, the sister of Mary "Polly" Berry who married John C. Sisk. Morgan Sisk and John C. Sisk were brothers. John C. Sisk's marriage bond post 9 December 1813, Madison County, Virginia to marry to Mary "Polly" Berry. Morgan Sisk was born in circa 1793-4 in Virginia and is the same age as Nancy McCleary Bushong who was born 29 November 1793 in Virginia. Morgan Sisk married Frances "Fanny" Berry with the Bond posted the 11th January 1815 in Madison County, Virginia and are found in the 1820 census living in Madison County, Virginia. Between 1830 and 1840 Morgan had permanently moved to Ohio but might have traveled back and forth between Virginia and Ohio in the time frame of 1820 to 1830, the same time that Milton was born to visit relatives already moved to Ohio. By 1840 Morgan Sisk has permanently moved to Pleasant Township, Knox County, Ohio. He is found in the 1850 census as a widower living with *Rhoda Bailey. By 1860 Morgan had moved to Logan County, Ohio not only his relatives, but where Nancy Bushong and her son Milton lived and by 1870 Morgan Sisk is living with his widowed daughter Lavina Startzman. He died in Logan County after the 1870 census and before the 1880 census. It would be worth your while to find an obit on him and on Lavina and all the other children of Morgan Sisk. Lavina Sisk Startzman was born in Madison County, Virginia in 1826 {Date year calculated from her death certificate}. This does not rule Morgan out as being the father of Milton if he traveled back and forth between Virginia and Ohio which I suspect he did and was visiting in Logan County, Ohio circa 1826. -------------------- MADISON COUNTY VIRGINIA MARRIAGES Morgan Sisk and Fannie Berry 11 January 1815 -------------------- 1820 Federal Census: Virginia Madison County MORGAN SISK spelled Sick -------------------- 1830 Federal Census: Virginia Madison County MORGAN SISK --------------------- At this point you might say, well this proves she is wrong. He was still in Virginia when Milton Bushong was conceived in 1826. Oh? He could have traveled to Ohio to visit Virginia relatives and to scout out where he wanted to live, before moving his wife and family of girls to Ohio permanently.
