    1. [BOSCHONG] Who is Charles Bushong, Brakeman, who died in 1903, Buried in Indiana?
    2. Russell Bushong
    3. Boschong Subscribers, Back in February 2013, I posted to the BOSCHONG List, an obit and a census record. I left the impression with the List that the census record and the obit were related and I now realize that is not what I meant to convey. Sorry about that. There were two different Charles and two different Williams and two have not been identified as to their lineage. ------------------------- This post is in regards to the Charles Bushong, brakeman, of the obit below, a real man of mystery. ----------------- The South Bend Weekly South Bend, Indiana Saturday, 9 January 1904 Page 7 LAKE SHORE BRAKEMAN DEAD BLOOD POISONING AFTER AN OPERATION KILLS CHARLES BUSHONG ELKHART, Indiana, 1 January -- Charles Bushong, a Lake Shore railroad brakeman, who suffered a broken arm three weeks ago at Englewood, Illinois, resulting in an amputation at the shoulder, is dead in the Union hospital, Englewood, from an abscess on the left hip. The abscess was caused by blood poisoning, resulting from the amputation. The remains were brought here for interment. ------------------------------------------ I spent the entire day yesterday on the telephone and on the net, trying to get more information on Charles Bushong, brakeman. This Charles Bushong has not been identified at this point in time and complicating the matter is the vague obit with the statement "The remains were brought here for interment." Does that mean in St. Joseph County where South Bend is located or Elkhart in Elkhart County? ---------------------------- I have tried every which way to find the identity of this Charles Bushong. I have called every Union Hospital in Illinois to Indiana to see when they were established to no avail. The Customer Service person in each was so nice. I have called the Vital Records, Elkhart County Health Department, but because this Charles died in Illinois, the Clerk said they would only have a shipping order, if it even existed back in 1903 which the County Clerk doubts. I have called funeral homes in the South Bend area and found that the one that probably existed back in 1903 went out of business a few years back and no one knows what happened to the records. The only possible clue would be what cemetery existed in Elkhart back in 1903 and to check those records. The only one that comes to mind in Elkhart would be the Elkhart City Cemetery which is now combined from three earlier cemeteries: The Grace Lawn Cemetery which was surveyed by Charles Beardsley in 1864. The Rice Cemetery which had it's first burial in 1913 which rules that one out and the Mennonite Cemetery. Was he a Mennonite? Probably not. I have searched the Cook County Illinois Death records and only came up with one Charles that even remote fits the date of death and burial in Indiana. There was no Charles Bushong in the Cook County records dying in 1903 but there was a listing for a Charles Brockway. Did someone mix up the last name or was it unreadable and they guessed? And if so, which is correct, Bushong or Brockway? --------------------------------- Cook County Illinois Deaths CHARLES T. BROCKWAY Died: 27 December 1903, Chicago, Cook County, Illinois Male, White, Workman Aged 56 years, 4 mos, 2 days Born: Michigan Burial: 29 December 1903, South Bend, Indiana ----------------------------------- CHARLES T. BROCKWAY {Is this really Bushong? Or is this death record correct and South Bend obit incorrect?} Born: 25 August 1847, Michigan {Calculated from death record} Died: 27 December 1903, Chicago, Cook County, Illinois Burial: 29 December 1903, South Bend, Indiana - Unknown Cemetery ----------------------------------- There is a Union Hospital at Terre Haute, Indiana that was in existence in 1903. I am wondering if this is where he died rather then in Illinois. I will be calling Vigo County Courthouse later today to check that out. They aren't open yet. ----------------------------------- This brings up a very important point. If I had not found this obit for this Charles, even though, I cannot identify him and have been running in circles and there is a possibility that he was not a Bushong, he would never have been acknowledged as existing since there doesn't seem to be any census records for him, his obit tells us nothing, and there is no exact place of burial or a tombstone. If it turns out he is a Bushong, how many more Bushongs are out there that haven't been found in any record? ------------------------------ More research will have to do done to solve this mystery. ----------------------------- Researched and Submitted by Gloria Neiger Bushong

Squire Bushong, as he was familiarly known for many years, had long been a recognized leader in business affairs, in politics and in church matters in the community in which he resided. Until recent years he had been a farmer by occupation, and for many years served as school director and Justice of the Peace in Upper Leacock township, and was also a Director of the Lancaster County Mutual Fire Insurance Company up to the time of his death. He served as an Elder in Heller's Reformed Church for almost thirty years and previously served as Deacon for a time. He was also Treasurer of the congregation for many years and was a frequent attendant at the meetings of Classis and Synod, as the representative of his congregation. He also was county commissioner during the term of 1879-81. All his positions of trust he filled with fidelity and fair ability, and his good judgment, uprightness, progressivences, and quiet easy demeanor gave him much influence for good. Deceased is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Annie Gockley, of Lancaster, and Mrs. Peter Stauffer, of Witmer. Three sons and one daughter, also survive, as follows: George and Martin of Philadelphia, T. Newton, of Bird-in-Hand, and Annie M. of Lancaster. His wife died about ten years ago. The funeral of the deceased was held on Sunday afternoon and was attended by a very large concourse of relatives and friends. The interment was made at Heller's church. ----------------- Researched and Submitted by Gloria Neiger Bushong

    3. CORRECTION TO A POST OF OCTOBER 2009 ----------------------- Good Beautiful Evening Boschong Subscribers, Back in October 2009 I posted about a William D. Bushong and I identified him as the son of Frederick M. Bushong and Alice E. Stowe. This morning I called the Coles County Illinois Courthouse and spoke with a Clerk and asked about the marriage application. The clerk checked for me and told me that the application stated that W. D. Bushong's parents were Perry Bushong and Etta Hayes. So I was wrong about his parents and am correcting that now. This particular William D. Bushong's parents are not Frederick M. Bushong and Alice E. Stowe. His parents are Perry Jefferson Bushong and Mary Etta Hayes proven by his marriage application in the courthouse in Coles County, Illinois. Two different William D. Bushongs close in age. Wow. And one not found in the 1900 census and the other not found in the 1910 census. There is a lesson to be learned here. I did the unthinkable and assumed. I broke my own rule as you cannot do genealogy based on census records and what you find on the Internet. You must get into the court records. I went against everything I believe as a genealogist and I have learned a very valuable lesson. I am not mad at anyone except myself. This is a mistake that could have been made by anyone since there were two men exactly the same names and their ages were only two years off and both with Kentucky origins. At the time I posted, I based my assumption on the only 1900 census found with a William D. Bushong and it clearly stated that William and Charles Bushong were brothers, both brakeman for the railroad. But I did wonder why in 1910, William had changed jobs, but explained it away to myself as the brakeman job being extremely dangerous and possibly his wife Nellie talked him into changing professions. He wouldn't be the first man that changed jobs mid-stream. It is a weird coincidence that William D. Bushong, as a salesman, married a girl whose father worked for the railroad as a conductor. Thanks to Herb who was the ONLY one who nicely pointed out the 2 year age difference for William in the census records from the 1900 to the later census records where William was married. But since accuracy to age in census is not always a criteria, I decided that until I found more evidence one way or the other, I would just stick with what I had posted and correct it later if need be. It did nag on me. I knew that there must be other proof one way or the other, out there which I have now found and Herb was correct, there are two different William D. Bushongs, so THANK YOU Herb for nicely pointing out a questionable post. :) ----------------------- I have not found the William D. Bushong, s/o of Perry and Etta Bushong, in the 1900 census before he married Nellie Partlowe as yet. Has anyone? ---------------------------- And what happened to William D. Bushong, the brakeman, son of Frederick Bushong and Alice Stowe after the 1900 census? Was he killed in an train accident? ---------------------- I have requested the obits for William D. Bushong and wife Nellie but they are backed up in requests at the public library in Indianapolis and it will take time, so I was told by the librarian. ----------------------- COMPARISON OF TWO HOUSEHOLDS IN 1880 CENSUS RECORDS FREDERICK M. 3. PART 1 OF 2 ------------------ Boschong Subscribers, I received the Deeds from Roosevelt County, New Mexico today and I will begin transcribing them to the List. Hiram K. Bushong received a Land Grant for 160 acres in Roosevelt County in June 1912. He sold it in December 1914 to George B. Smith. He only owned this land for 1 year and 6 months. So from the 1914 Deed in Part 2 of this post, we know that the Bushong place referred to in the newspaper article of August 1912 that I posted about recently was not the property of Hiram K. Bushong. Check the BOSCHONG Archives for January, February, March, April and May 2013 for further information on Hiram K. Bushong and his family. ---------------- CHRONICLE TIME LINE FOR HIRAM K. NIAGARA FALLS, NY, 17 August -- Edward Bushong had a starling experience yesterday at the falls. He was riding a bicycle across the reservation, headed for the bridge to Bath Island. There is quite a grade leading to the falls end of the bridge, and Bushong rushed down it at high speed. About 150 feet from the bridge he took his fee off the pedals and coasted. The wheel rushed onto the bridge and struck the railing, and both man and wheel went over into the rapids. At this point the waters rush to the falls with terrific speed, and the spectators expected to see the young man swept over the cataract, but fortunately, he scrambled to the bank, where he fell in a heap. He received a gash on the head from contact with a rock when he went into the rapids. He was dazed by his adventure and had to be taken home in a carriage. The bicycle struck about ten feet from the place where Bushong did and was recovered. One of the wheels was knocked to pieces, and the iron of the bridge that was struck by the wheel was broken. ---------------- Researched and Submitted by Gloria Neiger Bushong

    1. [BOSCHONG] Bureau of Land Management - Google Earth Map Images
    2. Russell Bushong
    3. Boschong Subscribers, The Bureau of Land Management is now using Google Earth so that you can actually see where the tract of land is located for any Homestead Patent or Land Grant. It is the coolest thing! Here are the instructions for navigating the site: Go to: www.glorecords.blm.gov When the site opens look for the Green area at the top and click on SEARCH DOCUMENTS When this opens, you will see several boxes For LOCATION - Select the State you want to explore For NAMES - Use only the last Name BUSHONG to get a better selection For LAND DESCRIPTION - Leave it on ANY MERIDIAN Then click SEARCH When the site opens with the various Bushongs pick the one you want to explore such as JOHN S. BUSHONG On JOHN S. BUSHONG or whoever you are exploring first click on IMAGE to get the legal description like I just posted. You can print or write this out. Then go back and explore ACCESSION. Click on the symbol next to the name under Accession. One it opens this is the page that will have the map. Above the map is a little box that says MAP. Check this and then the map will appear with the Section in light orange and the tract in darker orange. The darker orange is the tract of the person you are exploring. On the left side you will see a little sliding scale to zoom in and out with for a closer look at the property. Move it very slowly until you can read the names of the streets and highways. You can also take you mouse and move it around to explore what roads, city, water ways, etc are near the tract. This is really a cool tool. And if it has been filmed it on Google image using all this, you can find it at Google Earth and see the property as if you were standing on it. Good luck and have fun! Gloria Neiger Bushong
