Boschong Subscribers, Before I start with this post, I would like to say that if anyone has anything further to add to this post or any comments, please feel free to do so. And if anyone runs across Oscar Taylor Bushong in the 1910 census please let us know!!! While researching for this post, we went back to the BOSCHONG Archives and on the 16 May 2010 we posted some information about Annie D. Bushong who married William J. Jones, she being the daughter of Henry Taylor Bushong. We suddenly realize that the family of Henry Taylor Bushong was very complicated. Two Sims sisters married Bushongs. Julia Sims married Oscar Taylor Bushong and Florence Sims married Charles Lee Bushong. And then Oscar Taylor Bushong might have had an affair with their sister Cora or a woman named Cora and fathered a son named Isaac H. Bushong. The part about the affair with Cora Sims at this point is speculation. We always love a good family story and this is a good one. We had a family of Bushongs come to the last Bushong Reunion (2010) and we enjoyed talking with them very much. When they contacted me the first time to tell me they were coming, they told me they descended from Isaac Bushong of Culpeper, Virginia. At first I could not place their Isaac in the Culpeper Bushongs since they had no idea who Isaac's parents were as he was illegitimate and there was always a cover-up in that time frame. It was a challenge since an obit we had found for Isaac noted his parents as Cyrus and Cora Bushong and that threw me off a bit. After some researching through I found that the obit was a little off and the Cyrus referred to was really Oscar Taylor Bushong son of Henry Taylor Bushong and Elizabeth Jane Fincham. Since all of the children of Isaac and Sarah had three names, I'll bet that his full name was Cyrus Oscar Taylor Bushong! From there it went back to Isaac Bushong married to Sarah "Sallie" Swank. As you can see from the obit below, Oscar Taylor Bushong married Julia Sims and their union produced six children. What this obit doesn't reflect is the son that Oscar Taylor Bushong fathered, Isaac H. Bushong born 11 January 1909, born out of wedlock. After that he was in the dog house for sure! Could Julia's sister Cora Sims be the Cora named in the obit or was the name just thrown out there since she was an Aunt to Isaac? And now you will know the rest of the story. And this explains why Oscar Taylor Bushong has been so illusive to research and finally who and why the Isaac Bushong as nephew is shown in the household of Joseph Arthur Bushong and his sister Amanda Bushong in the 1920 census. -------------------------------- OSCAR TAYLOR BUSHONG Born: 10 March 1875, Rappahannock County, Virginia, s/o Isaac Bushong & Sarah Swank Married: 12 June 1902, Spotsylvania County, Virginia Died: 17 March 1914, Unknown JULIA SIMS Born: 27 October 1879, Livingston, Spotsylvania County, d/o Isaac Rufus Sims and Margaret Ann Burke Died: 26 September 1921, Livingston, Spotsylvania County, Virginia Burial: Unknown -------------------------------- Julia, Florence and Cora Sims were the daughters of Isaac Rufus Sims and wife Margaret Ann Burke and are found in 1870 in Fauquier County and in 1880 in Spotsylvania County. 1870 Federal Census: Virginia 1st District, PO Warren, Fauquier County Enumerated 29 July 1870 Page 520A Lines 14-18, HH 749/746 I. I'm sure his wife was pretty mad at him at this point. ----------------- We tried to tract down an Isaac Bushong under that name in the 1910 census to no avail and we also looked at the various Cora's in the census in Culpeper County. There were a lot of Cora's but only one which peaked our interest and could be the sister Cora Sims with a child in the household at an age for a candidate as Isaac. She was married at this time to an older man. The child was born in New York where Oscar Taylor Bushong's brother Charles Lee Bushong was living at that time period. So did Cora go off to New York to have Isaac and then come back married as Mrs. Ellis Mills and is the child Ellis W. Mills really Isaac H. Bushong? I could not find any of them in the next census and of course we find Isaac living with his Aunt and Uncle Bushong. Just remember at this point, this is pure speculation and not proven as fact at all. Good Morning Boschong Subscribers, Does anyone know absolutely for sure, the parents of the following fellow located on the Viet Nam War Memorial Wall? Donald Richard Bushong Born: 14 September 1846 Died: 14 July 1968, Viet Nam He was married in San Diego, California 15 December 1967 to Karen Lawrence. He was age 21 and she was age 20. We believe he held the rank of Sergeant. We have had a lot of possibilities but so far none of them have check out. His resident was listed as Troy, Michigan when he enlisted. We have exhausted all of our research resources. I called two libraries in Michigan, the Troy Public Library and the Oakland County Research Library and neither has any further information of any help. Short of contacting the Department of Defense, I'm not sure where to look further. Thanks, Gloria

He is mentioned in at least two books. One was THE STORY OF THE SUMMERS-KOONTZ EXECUTION by Robert H. Moore II and the other was LURAY AND PAGE COUNTY REVISITED by Dan Vaughn. In the last mentioned book the following is said about Silas K. Wright: Page 7 "Two worlds met when the Shenandoah Valley Railroad reached Page in 1881. The railroad, in hiring William Lau to document the line, recorded grandeur images of the Queen Anne-style Luray Inn. Popular Luray photographer Silas K. Wright would partner as Wright and Crabill, but he is most known for his independent work at his 4 South Broad Street location in Luray. Operating under both Sunbeam Gallaries and the Excelsior Studious, his cabinet card work was widely regarded. His image of the Luray Inn burning is possibly his most recognizable." Note: In this book there is a photo that Silas K. Wright took of a Reunion of Elijah Viers White's Battalion which included Company E, 12 Virginia Cavalry, the company that Silas served in during the Civil War. -------------------------- We could not find Silas K. Wright in the 1880 census anywhere in Virginia but we did find this fellow in Kansas. Whether he is one and the same, is inconclusive at this point in time.We are thinking probably not him BUT if it is him, then he was married twice and the first wife disappeared. He then returned to Virginia and married Fannie Miller. R. Peck, of Pataskala, Ohio, who are cousins of Mr. Wright, heard in some way that he was suffering severely with cramp colic and at once left home to come down and see about him. Reaching Woodstock Wednesday evening they engaged a physician and drove out to Mr. Wright's home arriving there at a late hour of the night. They found mr. Wright sleeping soundly and perfectly well. an investigation at once took place and the whole matter proved to be a false alarm. George hadn't a bit of cramp colic and had only indulged a little two freely in water melons. He thinks the fellow who phones the news to Ohio got things mixed. However, he was mighty glad to see his relatives. NOTE: We are pretty sure this article was written by John H. Grabill. -------------------------------- 1900 Federal Census: Virginia Johnston Mag. Boschong Subscribers, We need to make a correction in the census record for 1850. Since we started researching George I. Boschong Subscribers, We found the obit for Elizabeth Bushong who married William Wright in the Shenandoah Herald for 1890. There are so many curious unanswered questions about her and the family. For instance, when her father Andrew Bushong wrote his Will, she was married and yet it does not appear that way in the Will. Of course, this does give credence to the suit filed in Shenandoah County by grandson Henry Snapp after Andrew Bushong death where the grandson claimed that his grandfather did not write the Will. He claimed that John Bushong wrote it and passed it off as his father's Will. We posted this Chancery suit back in March 2009 as part of our post about Andrew Bushong but am re-posting some of it here. Check BOSCHONG Archives for the entire suit. We can find no marriage record for Elizabeth Bushong and William Wright which really bugs us. There should be one! Elizabeth Bushong Wright and husband William Wright had three confirmed children and yet we have seen many submitters state five. Until we can determine the exact date of the marriage, we cannot add the two young boys who died early on as their children. -------------------- This Chancery Bill was rather interesting. Evidently Henry Snapp thought that the Will of his grandfather Andrew Bushong was a fake and was trying to have it made null and void in the Court. We find it rather interesting that the other two Executors named in the Will refused to serve with John Bushong and that all of the depositions for this case are missing from the files. Grandson Henry Snapp stated in his Bill that Jacob, William and David were now residents of Virginia but that was not true. They had been residents of Ohio for a long time but whether they made the trip back to Virginia for this suit is not clear since much of the paperwork is missing. The one good bit of information that came from this Bill is the fact that it gives us the exact month that Andrew Bushong died, that being January in the year 1853. ------------------------------- Shenandoah County Virginia Chancery Bill Records held at Library of Virginia, Richmond Filed March 1853 Case #1854-017 Exr. of Andrew Bushong et als Plaintiff: Henry Snapp Defendants: John Bushong, Executor Andrew Bushong deceased And Isaac Bushong, Henry Bushong, David Bushong, William Bushong, Jacob Bushong, John Jacobs and wife Sarah Bushong, William Wright and wife Elizabeth To the honorable the Judge of the Circuit Court for the County of Shenandoah Respectively complaining sheweth unto Your Honor, Your Orator Henry Snapp, that sometime in the month of January 1853, one Andrew Bushong, then a resident of Shenandoah County, died leaving as his only heirs at law, the following persons VIZ: John Bushong, Andrew Bushong, Isaac Bushong, Henry Bushong, David Bushong, William Bushong, Jacob Bushong, Sarah the wife of John Jacobs, Elizabeth the wife of William Wright and Your Orator Henry Snapp (the only child of Margaret his Mother, now deceased, a daughter of said Andrew Bushong, that died many years ago.) Your Orator sheweth that said Andrew Bushong died seized and possessed of a large real and personal Estate, situate in the County aforesaid: As to all which his children, and grandchild above named are the only heirs and distributees. That the County Court of Shenandoah, at its March Term 1853, admitted to probate a paper writing purporting to be the last will and testament of said Andrew Bushong deceased; an official copy of which and after, now admitting the same to probate is filed herewith as Exhibit No. 1 and I pray so to be taken as part of this Bill. That this so called pretended will was prepared by John Bushong one of the Executors therein named who qualified as such executor given bond and security as required by law, the other executors named in said will refusing to qualify as will fully appear by reference to Exhibit No. 1 as aforesaid. Your Orator and heir so charges that the said paper writing so produced and admitted to publish as aforesaid was not and is not the last will and testament of the said Andrew Bushong deceased. It is further shown that Your Orator and the above named children of Andrew Bushong deceased VIZ: John, Andrew. Isaac. Henry. David. William. Jacob. Sarah Jacobs wife of John Jacobs and Elizabeth wife of William Wright are devisees under said pretended will and are therefore necessary parties to this suit. That said Jacob Bushong, William Bushong, and David Bushong are now residents of this Commonwealth; and that all the heirs reside in the County of Shenandoah. To the end therefore that justice may be done and Your Orator prays that said John Bushong an heir together and as executor of the so called last will and testament of Andrew Bushong deceased, Andrew Bushong, Isaac Bushong, Henry Bushong, David Bushong, William Bushong, Jacob Bushong, John Jacobs and Sarah his wife and William Wright and Elizabeth his wife may be made parties, defendants to this suit and answer this Bill upon oath: That the Court will direct an issue to be tried at its bar "whether the said paper writing admitted to probate as aforesaid, is the true last will and testament of the said Andrew Bushong deceased and that the Item may be set aside and declared null and void so that Your Orator and the sons and daughter aforesaid Andrew Bushong deceased may be let in as heirs and distributees of the Estate of deceased and that the court will grant other and further general relief on the premises and the circumstances of the case may require and will compel with the proceedings of a Court of Equity and as in duty bound Your Orator will ever pray for. Good Evening Boschong Subscribers, I have been working on a post about Elizabeth Bushong who married William Wright. There are a few questions about the research done in the past. Has anyone ever found a marriage record and date for William Wright and Elizabeth "Betsy" Bushong of Shenandoah County, VA? Here is the 1860 census on them. I am guessing that they married around 1842 since their oldest son was born in that era. I looked in the bonds but haven't found them as yet. Elizabeth lived until 1890 but her obit in The Shenandoah Herald doesn't give much information except the names of her three sons. I will post to this obit to the List in the near future. Part 1 of 4 ------------------------ Happy New Year's Day Boschong Subscribers, We did research a long time ago on the family of John Bushong and Magdalena Bauserman which included grandson Abraham Bushong married to Adelaide Virginia Taylor, the daughter of Chloe Hackley and Herbert M. Taylor. Chloe Hackley and Herbert M. Taylor married 26 March 1833 in Fauquier County, VA. Check the BOSCHONG Archives for September 2005, January 2006, October 2006, April 2007, May 2007, June 2007, March 2008, June 2008, August 2009, September 2009, September 2010, and December 2010 for more information on this family lineage. Abraham Bushong was the son of William Bushong and Rachel Clem of Powell's Fort Bushongs. This family has an interesting family history since Adalaide Virginia Taylor's sister Mary Jane Taylor was married to Absolom Clem who was killed by bushwachers in 1862 in the Fort. Absolom Clem was the brother of Rachel Clem who married William Bushong, son of John Bushong and Magdalena Bauserman. Another part of the family history is that Arthur Godfrey bought Bushong land in 1946 near Clark's Gap, Loudoun County, Virginia. Abraham Bushong and wife Adelaide in Powells Fort in 1876 sold 60 acres of their land reserving a right away to their residence to Alfred Ritenour, son of George and Anna Ritenour. We believe this 60 acres was possibly part of 100 acres owned by the heirs of his brother Jacob Bushong that his father William had bought from Elizabeth McInturff Bushong , widow of his brother Jacob and her son Andrew Jackson Bushong, his nephew after Andrew reached age of consent in 1868. William Bushong died 31 March 1875. His widow Rachel Clem Bushong sold in 1881, more of their Powells' Fort land, 65 acres that came from her husband to Alfred Ritenour which means if they didn't sell the land, the heirs of Alfred Ritenour are living on Bushong land. The original tract was 212 acres plus other acreage and was divided among John Bushong's heirs. Some of the remaining acres was owned by Elizabeth Bushong and husband Isaac Coverstone. We have copies of most of the Deeds which we have put on our BOSCHONG List in January 2006 but think there are a few still missing. Much later in the family history, the Abraham Bushong family moved from Shenandoah County, to Clark's Gap in Warren County, to Loudoun County where Abraham Bushong bought a beautiful farm of 295 acres referred to as Greenlease Farm. After the death of Abraham and wife Adelaide Bushong, their children inherited the farm. They just referred to it as "The Farm." In October 1915 the son John and wife Pearl (Rake) Bushong sold their interest to his three siblings and moved to Washington DC area. Virgil, Minnie and Charles lived on the farm until 1918 when on 18 May 1918, Virgil conveyed his interest in the property to his two unmarried siblings, Minnie Belle Bushong and Charles E. Bushong for one dollar. On the 27 December 1919, Minnie Belle and Charles sold the 295 acres farm to Frank P Hurst. This farm was bought around 1946 by Arthur Godfrey and his wife, of radio and television fame and was one of two farms that Arthur Godfrey owned in Loudoun County, Virginia. Virgil S. Bushong after conveying his interest in the home farm at Clark's Gap to Charles and Minnie, then married 1 June 1918, Elizabeth Warren, a school teacher and bought a large farm at Mt. Gilead. Later Virgil S. Bushong bought additional property surrounding his Mountain View Farm. 10 April 1929 he bought 70 acres known as the Harrison Farm and 9 May 1931 the Jackson Place containing 192 acres . By the time Virgil Silman Bushong known as V. S. Bushong had finished buying property, he owned almost 1000 acres of land. He was a horse and cattle man. --------------------------- The Bushongs had a lot of idiosyncrasies and didn't always like the names they were born with. William M. Bushong alias Virgil Silman Bushong was no exception and made it known at a very early age that he did not like his name and would not answer to it. For a long time until he entered school, they called him "Buddy." When he entered school the school teacher insisted that he have a formal name so Buddy decided he liked the school teacher's name and proclaimed he would be known as Virgil Silman Bushong. Later, as an adult, he would use just his initials V. S. Bushong. --------------------------- Shenandoah County Virginia Deed Book SS Page 467 10 May 1841 THIS INDENTURE made the 10 day of May in the year 1841 between David McInturff Junr. David Crawford, Seal Philip Stickley, Seal Shenandoah County, SS This within conveyance was returned to the Clerk's office of said County on the 10th day of August 1841 and admitted to record. Teste P. Williams, CSC ---------- The 212 acres of land in Powell's Fort was to be divided up among his 7 heirs (6 children & his second wife Catherine) but the sons Jacob and William Bushong bought out the interests of their siblings, Mary (Michael Fogle} and Andrew J. Bushong and John's widow Catharine got her Dower of 51 1/2 acres. We know what happened to William Bsuhong's land as it was sold to Alfred Ritenour later, but for a long time we could not find what happened to the land that Jacob Bushong owned in Powell's Fort until a trip to Virginia in October 2006 to the courthouse at Woodstock for another look through the books. We found a Deed of Dower Rights which answers some of our questions, but not all. Bushong died Sunday at his home, 1264 North 12th Street, at the age of 61 years. He was a native and lifelong resident of Reading, a son of the late William A. and Lydia B. Heller Bushong. He was a machinist by occupation, was a member of the P. & R. Relief Association and the Eagles. There survive his widow, Vinnie A. (Bossler) Bushong, one daughter, Grace M. and a brother John H. The body was removed to the parlors of Funeral Director T. C. Auman, from which place the funeral will be held Wednesday afternoon. ------------------------------- We searched the BOSCHONG Archives to see what would pop out and realized that we had posted about his mother Mrs. Lydia B. Bushong back in February 2007. We still are not sure about his lineage. ------------------------- Subject: [BOSCHONG] 1910 Obit for Mrs. Lydia B. Bushong Date: Sun, 18 Feb 2007 15:11:19 EST Subscribers, The following obit left us totally confused when we tried to research from the information given in it. We still do not know how the Bushong name fits in. We are pretty sure that Lydia's maiden name was Heller. We do not know which Bushong she married if she did marry and how the name Lorah fits into the picture. Anyone researched or descended from these people that could answer our questions? The age differences are striking but since Ancestry records are copied from the microfilm and transcribers make mistakes, we are not too worried. There too is the consideration that the parents were illiterate. We do think we have the correct people here. We think Henry Heller was married 3 times, to Esther, Magdalena and Elizabeth. ------------ The Philadelphia Inquirer 27 February 1910 Page 1 WOMAN DEAD IN BED Special to the Inquirer READING, Pa., Feb. 26-----When John H. Lorah returned home from work yesterday for his noonday meal he found his mother, Mrs. Lydia B. Bushong, 61 years old, dead in bed on the second floor.
