First I need to correct a typo in my original post " They are both buried in Grandview Cemetery, Carrollton, Carroll Co., OH. Documentation supports Jacob as soldier who served in the Revolutionary War. I find nothing more than a gravestone supporting that Samuel served. So, my conclusion from the available data is that Jacob is probably not Samuel. Perhaps he did, but I would need more proof to substantiate the claim. And because they are not the same person that does not mean that they did not both serve the county. And I'd like to respond to Gloria's reply to it. She writes: "I just got off of the telephone with a professional genealogist named Alvie Davidson a few minutes ago who is well known in his field nationally and an expert in Revolutionary War Records. [snip]" "He said: You have to remember that Washington was burned to the ground during the Revolution" {closer to the War of 1812} "and not all of the records survived. That and the fact that the Archives had a fire many years later and there was a lot of water damage in the basement with the old records." {destroying the 1890 Census}. "He said: As far as Samuel Bushong not showing up in the Revolutionary War Pensions there were many who served in the war that never asked for a pension. Mainly because they had money and didn't need it." "I say: Very few of the Bushongs who served asked for a pension. Jacob evidently was without income at the time he applied for a pension and needed the money so please don't use that fact of pension application or receiving a pension as a criteria for determining that a Samuel Bushong did not serve." With regard to pensions, much of what you say is correct. Pensions usually went to soldiers with injuries, or to soldiers widows. Many never applied, or those who did needed an attorney to represent their case to the government. Jacob owned land and had a large family. It was as much a case that they met the conditions of the pension (bodily injury or death), applied for the pension and were granted it. Often they felt they were "due it." In fact, Jacob was "Dropped from roll May1, 1820." No reason is given. But lack of a pension is not the only source I cited. Samuel is not listed in The Official Roster of the Soldiers of the American Revolution Buried in the State of Ohio. by Daughters of the American Revolution. (Volume 1 in 1929 or Volume 2 in 1938). Notice it says Roster; this is not a pension document. Samuel also did not have a Bounty-Land Warrant Application. Again, like the lack of a pension, not exclusionary. None of the Ohio county histories mention Samuel, with does not negate the claim but doesn't substantiate it either. "He said: Tombstones back in those days were chisled out right in front of the relatives while they watched and then erected. If the name had been incorrect, a family member would have spoken up with the first incorrect S instead of J and had it corrected right then." "I say: His tombstone was erected at the time of his death when he was buried in 1829. Since Jacob Bushong didn't die until 1830, don't you think that with the large family that Jacob had, that if the tombstone did indeed belong to your Jacob and was incorrect as to the name, that someone would have had it corrected or taken down? And why would they make two mistakes on a tombstone, the name and the date.....really. It was re-done by a relative in 1930 when it was beginning to wear down but as the newspaper article stated, it was still readable." Gloria are you unaware that there are two separate gravestones, one for Samuel and one for Jacob. I have transcribed four sizable cemeteries (in Pennsylvania and Kansas) and have found many inconsistencies in both names and dates when compared to obituaries and family histories. I agree sources including published county histories are not always correct, but just because "it's carved in stone," you can't assume that it is correct either. "I say: Samuel Bushong was on the DAR Ohio Roster until Carol W. Bell had it removed!!!!! Samuel Bushong also is noted in some very old newspapers articles which named him as Samuel Bushong. If it had been incorrect at that time of printing, they would have had a corrected printed in the next edition. That's what they did back then.........." Do you really believe what you are saying. Again the Roster was published in 1929 and 1938. Carol wasn't even born until 1939. If Samuel's stone was placed before that time don't you think the DAR would have included it in the Roster. And to assert that Carol Bell had it changed is absurd. I wish Carol were alive to refute your proposal. And I truly hope no one ever tries to defame Russell's good name. I was taught not to speak disrespectfully of those who have left these worldly bonds, even those with whom I might not agree. Carol did so very much to serve the Bushong name, all of the Bushongs, not just her line. If Samuel were a Revolutionary Soldier, she would have celebrated the fact, not had it removed. If you have newspaper articles relating to this Samuel (d. 1829), would you be willing to share. The earliest Samuel I have in my database (of >10,000) was born in 1794, obviously to late to be a Revolutionary War soldier. I've not worked on this line in sometime and I know I don't have all of the Bushongs. All of the documentation I provided is available on Ancestry.com if you'd care to check. "I say: There were too many Bushongs named Samuel in the early ancestors for there not to be a Samuel Bushong before Jacob and if you would just think about it, didn't Jacob Bushong name a son Samuel? Where did that name come from if not from an older relative named Samuel." And what relevance do naming conventions have in this discussion. It neither proves or disproves the point, you are attempting to make "Don't let the lack of paperwork blind you to the simple facts." I am not blinded by simple facts. Early family history is exceeding difficult often due to lack of hard evidence. But "Genealogy without documentation is mythology." And again, I ask my question. Is Samuel possibly the same person as Joseph, for whom there is evidence of burial at Grandview, but no stone. Glenn

I guess you misunderstood me...Washington City burned during the War of 1812 when the British and French were in a big argument with each other and the US government got into it. Boschong Subscribers, We now know that Morton Edwin Bushong was not the son of Henry Bushong as the Slaymaker book indicates. His parents were John Bushong and Phoebe Hobson. They were married 28 November 1878 in Chester County, Pennsylvania and John died January 1891 and is buried in Homerville Friend Burying Ground in Chester County, Pennsylvania. We found the following in an old Winter 1987 Bushong Bulletin. Page 41. "Judy Cassidy sent us a photocopy of an item from a torn scrap of newspaper, undated, but it appears to be in the late 1800's. The George School was in Newtown, Bucks County, Pennsylvania and states: "George School Notes: The Penn Public Meeting was called to Order on 7th day evening by the President, Stephen B. Twining. Minutes read. Then followed the following excellent program: Morton Bushong, "When John Left The Farm." Morton Edwin Bushong was probably a school boy at this time and was giving a report on his father John Bushong. I'd be willing to bet that Morton Edwin Bushong is probably buried in the same cemetery as his father John. I will see if I can track it down for sure on Monday. Gloria Bushong
Boschong Subscribers, There has been a lot of discussion about an article in the Fall 1984 issue of the Bushong Bulletin where Carol W. Bell put up a pretty good case claiming that the Revolutionary War soldier buried in Grandview Cemetery was really Jacob Bushong her ancestor. She put out a lot of material to support her claim, but even with all that, there is one small detail that she seemed to have overlooked. The stone was erected in 1829, the year that Samuel Bushong died. The tombstone reads "SAMUEL BUSHONG DIED 1829, FOUGHT UNDER BARON STEUBEN IN THE REVOLUTIONARY WAR." If Samuel Bushong died in 1829 which we believe he did, then he could not possibly be Jacob Bushong born 1753-54 since that Jacob was still alive and signing a Deed with his wife Eve in April 1830 in Centreville. (Columbiana County Ohio Deed Book 13, Page 348). There definitely was a Samuel Bushong who died in 1829 and his name was not Jacob. Sorry guys. Gloria I would like to reply including my sources. Samuel Bushong is not listed in the Revolutionary War Pension and Bounty-Land Warrant Application Files. Listed there however is: Service Number Va Bushong, Jacob S9297 Listed in The Pension Roll of 1835, U. S. Department of the Treasury lists Statement &c. of Columbiana county, Ohio. Jacob Bushong Private $96 (annual) Virginia continental (service) Nov. 10, 1818 (pension roll) June 3, 1818 (comencement of pension) Jacob is also listed in Ledgers of Payments, 1818-1872, to U.S. Pensioners Under Acts of 1818 Through 1858 From Records of the Office of the Third Auditor of the Treasury, 1818-1872; (National Archives Microfilm Publication T718, 23 rolls); Records of the Accounting Officers of the Department of the Treasury, Record Group 217; National Archives, Washington, D.C. as Bushong Jacob Private $8 (monthly allowance) 3 June 1818 (Commencement) Also DAR Abstracts of Rev War Pension Files lists BUSHONG, Jacob S9297, VA Line, appl 15 May 1818 Columbiana Cty OH aged 64, in 1828 sol was living in Stark Cty, OH, sol had srv as Artifacer with the VA Troops under Capt Francis Cowherd. Samuel is also not listed in The Official Roster of the Soldiers of the American Revolution Buried in the State of Ohio. Daughters of the American Revolution. Listed there are: BUSHONG, JOSEPH, (Carroll Co.) A soldier of the war history of Carroll Co. p. 360 Vol 1. Howes Hist Coll O. Bur Carrollton, Carol Co, O. Fur infor Jane Dailey, State Chairman. The only citation for Samuel is found in Tombstone Inscriptions & Family Records of Carroll County, Ohio, Esther Weygandt Powell, Akron, Ohio, 1973. Bushong, Samuel 1829 ae ? REV WAR soldier under Baron Steuben (DAR Roster #2 gives Jacob Bushong of Columbiana Co. p.79 & DAR Roster #1 p. 61 gives Joseph Bushong of Carroll Co. & Carroll Co. History Vol. I, p. 360) Wife ____? Considering there is no documentation of Samuel Bushongs Revolutionary War service other than his gravestone, it would be of interest to know when it was placed and by whom. Is Samuel the same as Joseph for whom there is a record of burial in the cemetery? And does anyone know to which families Joseph, and Samuel belong. I have Jacob Bushong (m. Eva Catharina Bossert) as being b. 18 February 1754 and d. before 16 August 1830 (the date his will as probated). His military marker states: JACOB BUSHONG PVT CONTINENTAL LINE REVOLUTIONARY WAR 1754 1830 (Grandview Cemetery, Carroll County, Ohio Genealogical Society website) They are both buried in Grandview Cemetery, Carrollton, Carroll Co., OH. Documentation supports Jacob as soldier who served in the Revolutionary War. I find nothing more than a gravestone supporting that Samuel served. So, my conclusion from the available data is that Jacob is probably not Samuel. Perhaps he did, but I would need more proof to substantiate thw claim. And because they are not the same person does not mean that they both serve the county.
Disregard this as it isn't relevant at this moment!
So Mary Rakeshaw and Henry's second wife Alice Rakestraw were sisters? I'll have to study that to see if it proves correct. Thanks, GB

Boschong Subscribers, We found Morton Edwin Bushong in the World War II Draft Registrations and wondered who he was, sooooo we researched. Here is our findings. All other researchers have Morton Edwin Bushong's parents as Henry Bushong and Irene Paxson. Sure hope they are right...........The 1900 census makes me wonder since Mary Jane Hobson Rakestraw lists him as her nephew. Is there some other proof in writing other then the lineage listed in the Slaymaker book with no documents to back it up? I'm not saying he's not, I just want to see something else in writing.........if you know what I mean. An obit perhaps? Boschong Subscribers, I told you I would get back to you when I knew more about Donald Richard Bushong. Back the 26 April 2009 I posted about the lineage of this fellow not realizing that he was a descendant. I am re-posting that post here with a few new comments in caps, but for further information on the family check the BOSCHONG Archives for April 2009 and October 2008. I would like to thank Rich from Roseland Park Cemetery who I talked to first for being so helpful and second to William Kraulik who was so gracious to spend time talking with me by telephone. Yesterday (Saturday) I spoke with the step-father, William Kraulik who lives in Ferndale about his step-son and wife Margaret. He told me that Margaret had divorced Donald W. Bushong and that he had married Margaret in 1968 the year that Donald was killed in Viet Nam. They had known each other for years before they married. He told me that Donald was on his second tour in Viet Nam when he was killed. He told me that Donald had two sisters. Sorry guys. Gloria
Boschong Subscribers, I have found the burial place of Donald Richard Bushong thanks to Nancy Bushong. He is buried in Roseland Park Cemetery in Berkley, Michigan. I have talked to his step-father and will be doing a post some time this weekend on him and the family. I have a busy Saturday away from the computer so until then. Gloria Bushong
Thanks Nancy. I will call the cemetery and see if they have additional information on him. Gloria
