Boschong Subscribers, There were 13 Bushong girls that married early in Stark County, Ohio. We only have two girls left to research that have not been researched and attached to parents. One is Margarethe Bushong who was married in Stark County, Ohio in 1831. Stark County Ohio Marriages Peter Stirner and Margarethe Bushong 10 May 1831 We believe that the groom's name might have been misspelled. Could Stirner really be Steiner as that name is in Stark County. The other similar name is Stoner but we have pretty much ruled that out. Any thoughts on this? ---------------- The other girl is Catharine Bushong who married Abraham Ream. Stark County Ohio Marriages 15 October 1829 ----------------- Before we start this research, is there anyone that has already researched either of these couples? If so, how about contributing to the List so I won't have to waste my time, doing something that has already been researched. Thanks, Gloria
Boschong Subscribers, As you well know, I have been trying to research some of the Bushong girls in Stark County, Ohio who married out of the name. It is always harder research to find these girls. I have been spending a lot of time in Ohio census records because of this. The subject of the post that I am doing now was not on my agenda for today or any day in the future after the fuss over the past post about Samuel VS Jacob post. But, I am going to post this since we have new subscribers who have never seen this infor mation and while the past discussion is still fresh in everyone's mind. Back on 6 April 2000 on the Bushong Forum, Johnita P. Malone and I took a bold step and posted some information about our ancestors, her ancestor, the Revolutionary War Soldier Jacob Bushong who married Eve Bossert and ours being John Bushong Jr. Many of you don't know who she was, but Johnita was a very well respected genealogical researcher who published books and gave seminars on genealogy. She was extremely knowledgeable. She was a wonderful person to know. She died from cancer and I still miss our e-mail correspondences and phone calls. I have discovered some new information that may give Johnita's information new life. It all centers around Stark County, Ohio where the Revolutionary War Soldier is buried. Both Johnita and I have done total in-depth research on Jacob Bushong married to Eve Bossert since Jacob was her lineage and my husband Russell is from John Bushong Jr. married to Elizabeth lineage. She agreed that the 1754 baptismal record in Lancaster County, PA belonged to him and not to her lineage of Jacob Bushong. Because of the problem with the baptismal record, none of our relatives have been allowed to join DAR although SAR has recognized the lineage with our proof, so my husband was a member. Jacob Bushong married Eve Bossert who was probably born in Pendleton County, VA, now West Virginia. Her Bosserts came to this country in 1740 aboard the ship SAMUEL AND ELIZABETH and settled first in Northhampton County, Pennsylvania and then went down to Pendleton County, Virginia (now West Virginia) where you will find the father's Will and Deeds. There are also Deeds for his son-in-law Jacob Bushong there. Now to get on to what I have to say. I have a very good memory, almost photographic, which I inherited from my father. I'm not telling this as a brag, just as a fact of life which has been a blessing and a curse. I have an ability to remember what I have seen for years and I have sat for years looking page by page at census records searching for Bushongs. There is a life beyond Ancestry search index as they are not compete nor accurate! I believe that was proven in the last post where I sat and went page by page in Indiana looking for Barbara Bushong Warner and her husband William S. Warner in the 1860 census. You will not find them in the Ancestry index for that year. I pretty much know every family in the Augusta, Rockingham, Shenandoah, and Page County censuses that have anything to do with Bushongs, be it related as kin or as a neighbor or friend. Having this knowledge is a great help when jumping out of Virginia to other states in the census. I just finished going page by page through the 1830 census for all of Stark County, Ohio as I was looking for the husband's families of the Bushong girls who married out of their name. My thought was not on the Revolutionary War soldier at all but suddenly one thing struck me as I was looking at the different families in the townships in Stark. Here was another link in the lineage of Jacob Bushong married to Eve Bossert that makes another good argument for that Jacob to be the son of Jacob Bushong married to Juliana Weigel/Wigle. Most all of the Virginians that came to that Stark County area early on, seem to have come from the Augusta, Rockingham, Page County area, not so much Shenandoah and have links to the Bushongs through marriage or Deeds. Not any old Bushong family but the Jacob Bushong and Juliana Weigel, Peter Bushong and Barbara Wenger, and the Henry Bushong and Barbara Lohr families. Here are some of those names that dominate this county: Null, Saylor, Gouchenour, Miller, Early, Kline, Moyer, Myers, Harshberger, Hershberger, McCormick, Spitler, Bowers, Steele, Clinedist, Young, Weaver, Carr, Lower, Brown, Hoover, Nisewanger, Moffitt, Rice, Reese, Shoe, Hodge, Wenger, Strickler, Markley, Morehart, Roudabaugh, Rodabush, Wolf, Swartz, Graybill, Wentz, Dewalt, Hite, Conrad, Boyd, Summers, Frantz, just to name a few. These family names all lived in the southern part of Shenandoah county on the border between and in Rockingham, Pendleton, Augusta and Page counties. So now what does this mean? It means that Johnita and I were probably correct in our research. That Jacob Bushong married to Eve Bossert was the son of Jacob Bushong Sr. and Juliana Weigel just as we have always said. His birth date was probably: 16 February 1755 which puts him right in the age range that he claimed he was when he applied for his pension in Ohio. Now before you say well how can this be his baptismal record when there was a girl baptized 13 April of the same year for the same couple? Johnita gave one explanation and I will add to that. Lischy traveled around and possibly the girl was sick in February and so he came back in April to do the job. Sometimes they did baptize more then one child at one time. --------------- RESEARCH OF JOHNITA MALONE WITH HER OWN WORDS: 6 April 2000 I agree that John Jacob Bushong who married Elizabeth Windle was the son of JOHN BUSHONG and ELIZABETHA SPRINCKEL. It would certainly appear that Jacob Bushong who married Eva Catherine Bossert is the son of Jacob Bushong and Julliana Weigel. There is a baptism record for what appears to be this Jacob Bushong although it has been miswritten by the minister. It follows: 16 Feb 1755. Lischy's Private Record, pg 28. den 16 Febr. 1755. Infantes - Jacob; Parentes - Jacob Muller and Jullianna; Testes - Michel Welsch and Barbara. #507. (NOTE: From researcher, Eckhard Hensel, 111 Fisherman's Lane, Wrightsville, PA 17368: "Lischy's Private Record: Index. Now comes the clincher: Index says Bouchon on page 28 (actually Index says p. 29 but is 1 page "off".) But when you look in the text, there is no Bouchon. Then I decided to look at the first names of the parents, Jacob and Juliana, and sure enough there they are, Jacob and Julianna, but under the surname "Mueller". Either Rev. Lischy or later the transcriber/indexer or both, made errors on this entry. One possible explanation for the error is that there is another Mueller right above this entry. The son is called Jacob only, not John Jacob like the other in 1754. So this must be your Jacob. Sponsor is Michel Welsch. I also double checked through all the Muellers. Result: There is no Jacob and Julianna Mueller, nor any other Jacob Julianna combination as parents anywhere in that time period.") Upon looking at the original record, we find that Rev. Lishcy has written Mueller but probably in error, since there is no other Jacob and Julliana Mueller mentioned in Rev. Lischy's records but there are other records of Jacob and Julliana Bouchon, such as these that follow: 13 Apr 1755. York County, Pennsylvania Church Records of the 18th Century, Volume 3, by Marlene S. Bates and F. Edward Wright, Jacob Lischy's Private Pastoral Record, pg 232. Anna Margreth daughter of Jacob and Juliana Bouchon, was baptized 13 Apr 1755; sponsors: Michel Weiter and Elisabeth Weigel. 22 Aug 1756. York County, Pennsylvania Church Records of the 18th Century, Volume 3, by Marlene S. Bates and F. Edward Wright, Jacob Lischy's Private Pastoral Record, pg 238. Elisabeth daughter of Jacob and Jullianna Bouchon, was baptized 22 Aug 1756; sponsors: Elisabeth Weigel. 16 Dec 1759. York County, Pennsylvania Church Records of the 18th Century, Volume 3, by Marlene S. Bates and F. Edward Wright, Jacob Lischy's Private Pastoral Record, pg 250. Magdelena daughter of Jacob and Julianna Bouchon, was baptized 16 Dec 1759; sponsors: John Bouchon and Elisabeth. The Jacob, son of Jacob and Julliana, was baptized in 1755 but could have been born quite a bit earlier possibly as early as 1754. Jacob may have had occasion to meet and marry Eva Catherine Bossert because his father owned land in Pendleton Co., VA. 3 Apr 1812. Augusta County, VA., Will Book 11, pgs 124-126. Agreeable to an order of Court we the appraisers have made an Inventory of the Property of Jacob Bushong dec'd this third day of April one thousand eight hundred and twelf and is as follows viz. (Inventory follows). In addition to personal estate inventory, the following is included: 20 acres of land, bond on Phillip Null for $100; note on Phillip Null of $65 with interest from 16 Mar 1803; note on Phillip Null for $1 with interest from 16 Apr 1810; Bond on James Summers of twenty pounds with interest from 3 Feb 1812; note on Mathis Ansen of 19 pounds 13 shillings with interest from 17 Aug 1805; one bond on Mathias Ansen of $552 with interest from 14 Sep 1808; note on John Herrington $200 with interest from 25 Sep 1810; balance of bond on Benjamin Eagle of 54 pounds 18 shillings and 7 pence with interest from 1 Sep 1806; balance of a bond on Philip Miller of 157 pounds 18 shillings and 11 pence with interest from 3 Mar 1810; balance of bond on George Weathers of 2 pounds 13 shillings and 5 pence with interest from 29 Jul 1811; note on Phillip Edslin of 4 pounds 17 shillings with interest from 27 Nov 1794; bond on Phillip Null of 490 with interest from 19 Mar 1799; bond on Phillip Harris by balance due of 296 pounds 16 shillings and 5 pence with interest from 15 Feb 1812; To an article of agreement between Jacob Bushong dec'd and Henry Accord in the purchase of a plantation in Pendleton County the said Accord is indebted to the estate of Jacob Bushong dec'd the sum of two hundred & fifty pounds bearing interest from the different installments described in the said Article bearing date the 5th day of November 1806. Appraisers - James Kirk, Daniel Fall, Christian Hottel. Ordered recorded on 22 Jun 1812. This Jacob and Julliana Bushong's children have been hard to trace since Jacob did not mention all his children's names in his will. A few hints are available in his estate records but not all of his 11 heirs have been found. Would love to correspond with anyone who thinks they may descend from this line. Johnita P. Boschong Subscribers, We found a marriage record in Stark County, Ohio for Polly Bushong and John Harter. Polly is a nickname for Mary. We have no idea who her parents are at this point. WARNER As he journeys down the western slope of life, Mr. William S. Warner is vouchsafed an honored retirement from labor, as the reward of a long, active and useful business career, for through a long period he was identified with the agricultural interests as well as the carpenter's trade in St. Joseph County. He was born in Adams County, Pennsylvania 15 December 1822. His father Michael Warner was also a native of Pennsylvania, and was there married to one of its native daughters Margaret Slabauch, and they became the parents of twelve children, nine sons and three daughters, and two are now deceased. When their son William, who was the sixth child in order of birth, was a lad of eight years the family moved to Ohio, and in Stark County of that state the father passed away in death. It was in the early year of 1854 that William S. Warner came to St. Joseph County, in securing work at the carpenter's trade in South Bend. In 1875 he moved to a farm of one hundred and sixty acres in Penn township, which continued as his home for eleven years, but at the close of the period, in 1886, he sold the farm and came to Mishawaka to resume the carpenter's trade. His enterprise, energy, capable management and honorable dealings through all these years brought him a comfortable competence and in 1903 he laid aside the burdens and cares of a business life to rest in the enjoyment of the reward of his former toil, spending the evening of his life in the pleasant home, 217 East Lawrence Street, Mishawaka. He is the owner of two houses and lots in this city. In Canton, Ohio, on the 2nd of May 1847, Mr. Warner was united in marriage to Barbara Bushong, who was born in Stark County of that State, 23 July 1826, the daughter of John and Barbara (Crishbaum) Bushong, who were farming people. Mrs. Warner died 6 July 1888. Eleven children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Warner namely: Mary Barnhardt, Emeline (deceased), Elizabeth, Margaret (deceased), Milton, Ellen (deceased), William Henry, Edward, Lorenzo, Emilie (deceased) and Schuyler. The Republican Party receives Mr. Warner's hearty support and co-operation, and he is a stanch advocate of all measures to improve and benefit his community. His reputation in business has ever been unassailable, and in all the walks of life, he is found true to duty and to the trusts reposed in him. -------------------- Stark County Ohio Marriages Barbara Bushong to William S. Boschong Subscribers, Someone found two more census records for me, the 1870 and 1880. Thank you digger! Now that we have all of the censuses, we are re-posting them for consistency plus their burial record. Boschong Subscribers, We believe that Ann Bushong who married Michael Rovenstine could be the daughter of John Bushong and Barbara Kreighbaum or their son Andrew Bushong. I have only found them so far in the census below so it is hard to tell which couple she belonged with. It's like they dropped off of the face of the earth. I did find Rovenstine/Robenstine name in Kosciusko County, but so far have not found this particular couple or their son Dallas. Maybe they all died after this census. Okay, I am a stickler for detail. Been that way since I was born and I will not apologize for it. My motto is: Think, Investigate, Conclude. I went and looked at the 1820 and 1830 census records for a Jacob Bushong, Revolutionary War Soldier. I know that he was a private in the Revolution and received a pension in Ohio. No argument there. But, I would like to point out a few inconsistencies that have been overlooked because no one questioned. Based on the census records, it would appear that if this woman in the 1830 census is the wife of Jacob Bushong, Revolutionary War Soldier, the oldest she would have been when she married him was 13-14 years old since all of the quoted marriage dates for a couple named Jacob Bushong and Eve Bossert is 1 January 1784. So, if this Eve Bossert was under age when she married Jacob Bushong, someone from this lineage needs to find exactly where they were married to see who the person was who gave consent for this marriage. I believe her Bossert father was still alive, since I have found deeds in Pendleton County, VA now West Virginia that verifys this, so he would have put up the bond I'm thinking in present day Pendleton County, probably where they were married. I know you think that they were married at Shenandoah County because of the Strasburg church record there in the Lutheran church. We know that Simon Harr married that couple. But what you don't know, is that Simon Harr traveled several counties, including Pendleton and married many couples. He didn't always give back his returns in the country of the marriage. We have never seen a marriage bond in Shenandoah County for this couple, which means they possibly weren't married there..And just remember that there was another couple named Jacob Bushong and Catherine Cline who married and lived in Shenandoah County, son of Peter Bushong, named in his Will which we put on the List. They had a child named Mary Ann also named in Peter's Will. We have suspected that her name was Eve Catherine Cline since there are Deeds in Culpeper County recorded that way and we don't think that the Revolutionary War Soldier was ever in Culpeper County. And since we know that Peter was the brother of Henry and Henry's some of his family lived in Culpeper County and also that the family of John Bushong married to Magdalena Bauserman's family lived near Culpeper County, we think this is a pretty good bet that the Deeds there are for Peter's Jacob. Possibly you should look in Pennsylvania for a marriage record for the Revolutionary War Soldier and his wife Eve since I have said that Jacob Bushong's son John married to Barbara Kreighbaum was born and married there. BUT to look a little closer at the census records below, there are a few more problems as you will shortly see. And the 1820 is a corker...... 1820 Federal Census: Ohio Centerville, Washington, Columbiana County Page 38 JACOB BUSHONG 1 male 10 and under 16 years of age 1 male 16 and under 26 years of age 1 male 45 and up 1 female 16 and under 26 years of age 1 female 45 and up (Born 1775 and up) Based on this census the wife in the household was at least 45 years of age. So if you calculate birth date based on her youngest age of 45 you come to a birth date of 1775. That means that in 1784 when Jacob Bushong, the Revolutionary War Soldier married an Eve Catherine Bushong, if this woman was the Bossert woman, she would have been 9 years old when she married. ----------------------- 1830 Federal Census: Ohio Harrison Township, Stark County Page 174 Eve Catharine Bushong 2 males 20 to 30 years of age 1 female 10 to 15 years of age 1 female 50 and under 60 years of age (Born 1770-1780) --------------------------- So, this all I have to say about research on Jacob Bushong, Revolutionary War Soldier. ---------------------------- Researched and Submitted by Gloria Bushong

Correct? If you do the math to calculate the birth date for Eve Catherine Bushong of this 1830 census, using the age range from the 1830 census, you have quoted, you have a birthdate of between 1770 and 1780. What were the dates of birth for Jacob Bushong, the Revolutionary War soldiers children? Gloria

Gloria, I am not sure what the fuss is about. In the Grandview Cemete;ry, there are tombstones for both Jacob and Samuel. Both are credited with Revolutionary War Service. So why can't we let them both Rest In Peace. I don't understand your reasoning in saying "Jacob is Samuel" There is also a tombstone for Eva Catherine Bossert, Wife of Jacob Bushong. I doubt that someone would "make up" tombstones !! This is my last comment on the issue. I have a marriage date for Jacob Bushong and Eve Catherine Bossert/Bosert of Jan. 1, 1784 and the first child, John, born Oct. 22, 1784. Yes, she may have been only 14 years old, but they did that. Notice also in the 1830 census, there is a John Bushong listed next to her. Seven of the children were married and probably on their own by 1830. Dates for John and Eve's children go something like: 1786, 1789, 1791, 1794, 1797, 1804, 1805, 1807. Also, sometimes those slash marks were not always reliable. Boschong Subscribers, I sort of fell over Andrew Bushong while researching something else in Kosciusko County, Indiana and we are really excited about this find! -------------------------- MC CLINTIC CEMETERY Syracuse, Kosciusko County, Indiana Section 1, Row 7-8 ANDREW BUSHONG 12 June 1804 16 October 1881 Aged 77y 4m 4d ------------------------------- This Andrew Bushong is the son of John Bushong and Barbara Kreighbaum of Pennsylvania who settled in Stark/Carroll County, Ohio. We have posted quite a bit about the family of John and Barbara Bushong so check the BOSCHONG Archives for August 2006, September 2006, April 2007, September 2008, May 2009, November 2009 and January 2010 and a few more. I was hoping to find Andrew Bushong in the 1860 and 1880 census before posting this information but I have been working on this for well over two weeks and feel this information needs to get out there now. Possibly someone has research to fill in. The 1830 Census for Harrison, Stark Co., Ohio lists Eve Catherine Bushong as head of household, age 50-59. We know that (John) Jacob Bushong's wife's name was Eve/Eva Catherine. The other members of the household are appropriate ages for their children. Since Jacob died on August 16, 1830 - perhaps the census taker arrived at their house after Jacob died. The names Jacob Bushong & Samuel Bushong are numerous in Ohio, but the name Eve Catherine Bushong is unique. In a message dated 1/23/2011 2:06:48 P.M. Eastern Standard Time, [email protected] writes: Gloria are you unaware that there are two separate gravestones, one for Samuel and one for Jacob. I have transcribed four sizable cemeteries (in Pennsylvania and Kansas) and have found many inconsistencies in both names and dates when compared to obituaries and family histories. I agree sources including published county histories are not always correct, but just because "it's carved in stone," you can't assume that it is correct either. ----------------------------- Glenn may not see this answer. He subscribed to the List, posted and unsubscribed himself all in a matter of hours. This is the last that I will say on his post as I don't intend to waste any more time on him or this subject. I really have too much of my research yet to post to the List that's new. I will say that Glenn got all of his information for his posts on the subject straight from the Bushong Bulletins. By me pointing out a few errors in research submitted to The Bulletin is not besmirching a good name. To ignore mistakes without correcting them is the epitome of ignorance. Carol did a lot of good work by publishing the Bulletin but many researchers took part in the research of that material used for the Bulletin since she worked a full time job and didn't have time to do a lot of the research. So errors were made. Some were corrected by her and some were not. I too have walked literally hundreds of cemeteries here in Polk County since our IPGS group has been transcribing the tombstones for the past 15 plus years and publishing a series of books on them and once in a great while there may be an error but not many. The errors are usually in the newspaper obits not the tombstones. I stand by my statement and my research. I am not aware that there was any stone in the Grandview Cemetery marking a grave for either Jacob and Eve Bushong until 1981 when money was collected from family members to erect one. Correct me if I am wrong. -------------------------------- >From the 1984 issue of the Bushong Bulletin, Naomi R. White, Editor The Free Press Standard Carrollton, Ohio 5 June 1930 "Samuel Bushong's new marker was erected at the rear of the mausoleum in Grandview cemetery, where lies the humble grave of Samuel Bushong, the only veteran of the Revolutionary War to be interred in the local graveyard. The marker which had been in position since 1829, the year in which Mr. Bushong died, was replaced in 1930 by a new stone, the gift of Will Steen. This monument bears the inscription "Samuel Bushong, Died 1829. Fought under Baron Steuben in the Revolutionary War." The action of time and the elements of the old stone had almost obliterated the letters and Mr. Steen, in order to preserve the memory of this honorable man, transferred the original inscription to a new and permanent marker. Local historians did not record any facts regarding the life of the old soldier and all that is known of him is told on the grave. Baron Steuben was a distinguished Prussian officer who gave his services to the American cause." --------------------------- Blessings to you Glenn. Enough said. Gloria Bushong

Will someone from the List please post the 1820 and 1830 census records for Jacob Bushong married to Eve Bossert living in Stark or Carroll County Ohio to the List? I could find none. Thanks, Gloria
Boschong Subscribers, Our on-line friend Chocy recently put this post on the Vashenan List and we wanted to pass the information on to you since this may eventually clear up some of the lineages of the Virginia Bushongs. We are really excited about this and can't wait to dig in to these Chancery records! -------------------- >From Chocy: The Library of Virginia's Local Records Services Branch was recently awarded a $150,000 grant from the National Historical Publications and Records Commission (NHPRC) to support the scanning of the Augusta County Chancery Causes dating from 1745 to 1912. NHPRC, the grant funding arm of the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA), recognized the national significance of the Augusta County collection and validated the importance of and great benefits provided by LVA's ongoing digital chancery initiative. Chancery causes are invaluable to family historians and those interested in studying the history of a locality or region and its inhabitants. Chancery causes are legal proceedings that could not be decided readily by existing written laws. Decisions were made by a county justice or judge, not a jury, and on the basis of fairness, or equity, in place of the strictly formulated rules of common law. The Augusta County Chancery Causes are the most voluminous of any locality in Virginia and are one of the longest and most complete continuous collections of chancery records of any locality in the country. They document an unusually large geographic area. For the period 1745 to 1770, the boundaries of Augusta County encompassed most of western Virginia and what became the states of West Virginia, Kentucky, Illinois, and Ohio, and parts of present-day Pennsylvania as far north as Pittsburgh. In fact, the Augusta County court held sessions at Fort Pitt in Pittsburgh when claim to that area, known as the West Augusta District, was in dispute. Even after the county was reduced to roughly its present size in 1778, the Augusta County Court continued to be the repository for chancery causes from 28 localities, which were heard by the Staunton Superior Court of Chancery from 1801 to 1831. When completed, the Augusta index and images will join the over 5 million chancery images from 48 localities already posted online. The scanning portion of the Augusta project is slated to begin in February 2011.
