Thanks Wendy, More to come. Gloria
Good Evening Boschong Subscribers, I have been under the weather the past two days and spent most of today in bed but am feeling better for the moment. It seems to come and go in spells. While lying in bed, I got to thinking about the Bushong, Neidig and Stover connections and something suddenly hit me like a ton of bricks. Looking at the facts about David Bosang of Augusta County, VA, (BOSCHONG Archives January 2005) Jacob Bushong and Juliana Weigel of Augusta County, VA, Jacob Bushong and Eve Bossert and John Bushong and Barbara Kreighbaum of Stark County, there are some very striking coincidences. Or are they just coincidences? We think not. We think Strasburg, VA where Jacob Bushong and Eve Bossert were married is the key to a very complex family puzzle involving the Bosangs/Bushongs and the Stovers. That was the place where Peter Stover founded Stovertown. Peter Stover was married to Frainey Funk which should be a familiar couple to this List since they are the couple who was involved with several Deeds with David Bosang. When Peter Stover died in 1799 there were eight children named in his Will. We believe that there were at least nine children, possibly more, and those not named in the Will were already dead. One of his children, we believe, was the father of Anna Stover, the wife of John Bushong and the reason he was not named in the Will of his father, is because he was dead before John Bushong married Anna Stover. If you remember correctly Anna Stover had a guardian named Jacob Unger when she married. We believe this Jacob was probably married to one of the Stover girls who were sisters of Anna's father which would make that Jacob Unger an Uncle to Anna Stover by marriage. Some researchers have said that Anna Stover's parents were David Stover and Elizabeth Strickler and we know that Stover and Strickler are very prominent names in the Valley of Virginia. Check the BOSCHONG Archives for July 2009 for all of the Stover marriages. John Bushong to Anna Stover Guardian Jacob Unger 1 March 1805 Some of the group of Bushongs from Pennsylvania, passing through Virginia to Ohio, settling in Stark and Carroll County, Ohio married into the Stover and Niedig families also from Pennsylvania, Virginia and Ohio. Some were immigrants. Look at the names on the passenger list below which are very familiar to this Bushong family. Check back on my posts of January 2005 about the Bushong who became a Bosang. David Bosang Arrived in Port of Philadelphia aboard the ship "Two Brothers" from the Port of Rotterdam having stopped at Port of Portsmouth for supplies. Name shown on passenger list A, B, and C is shown as: Teobalt Bossong/Theobald (X) Bossong/Debalt(X)Bosseng He signed the Oath of Allegiance to the King of England with his mark (X). The ship's captain was Thomas Arnot. (Our added research) Among the other passengers on the ship were: Mattheis Dischong {Bushong} William Dischong {Bushong} John Frederick Schuy {Later as Shue/Shoe} Johann Peter Hahn {Also Haun} Johannes Neydig {Neidig} Johannes Schey {Shue/Shoe} Jacob Haun David Bosang made his way from the Port of Philadelphia to the York/Lancaster County PA area where he married Barbara Suess. He has a son named John who took out a license for an ordinary while in York County who later shows up in Staunton, again running an ordinary. He also has a daughter named Margaret. They make their way down to Virginia with evidence of them in the Strasburg, Frederick County, Virginia area with several Deeds and then down to Staunton, Augusta County area where David Bosang died leaving a Will under the name of David Bosang. He married twice. Once in Europe (wife's name unknown)with how knows how many children and then second in Lancaster County, PA when he married in Lancaster County, PA and states that he is a widower. His wife was a widow when he married her. When the family is living in Frederick County, Virginia Peter and Frainy STOVER execute a Deed to David Bosang for a lot in STRASBURG misspelling the name badly. But it is him. Since this is THE Strasburg, where Jacob Bushong and Eve Bossert were married, don't you find this a little more then a coincidence???? 1762 JULY 26 ------------ Frederick County Virginia Deed Book 7, Page 281 Deed from Peter and Frainey STOVER to Devault Busing {DAVID BOSANG/BUSHONG} 1/2 of Lot #44 in town of STRASBURG. Another Ream researchers ays that isn't true. Armed with this new information and spending all of yesterday morning, fternoon and evening team researching, going back and forth with Phyllis, we oth concur that for the moment, until otherwise proven incorrect, we are oing with the following information as being Catharine Bushong, even hough we have a few qualms with no definitive proof that Catharine Bushong eam, widow, went to Fulton County, Indiana and married again to John Ault. ccording to the Ream researcher who submitted their information to Family Tree Maker, the following is true: --------------------- braham J. Ream died 29 January 1852 in Stark County, Ohio. {We have othing to prove this since all the newspapers that we put on the last post did not say deceased, except the reference to the sale of his land in 1855} his bothers me since according to this researcher the widow Catharine Bushong) Ream married in Fulton County, Indiana 26 April 1853 before her usband's state was even settled. ------------------------ e have called Stark County Ohio Probate and county library trying to track down the Will of Abraham Ream and his probate and neither has it (old ecords are kept at the county library in their genealogy room) and we learned that ALL of the chancery records for Stark County have been missing for bout 30 years! The girl at the library says she believes someone threw them ut and they did not keep any electronic records or microfilmed records of ny of it. What idiot did that! ---------------------------- e called the Fulton County Indiana health department and courthouse who as very helpful and neither Catharine Ream's marriage nor her death records ave any genealogical information that would help us establish that this oman in Fulton County, Indiana is Catharine Bushong who married Abraham Ream ut we can't say that she isn't either since there is some evidence that he is. Boschong Subscribers, Back in September 2008 we put some information on the BOSCHONG List about Elizabeth Bushong, daughter of John Bushong and Barbara Kreighbaum who married Lewis Keiser. Heart trouble was at once assigned as the cause of death. Mr. Ault has been a resident of Henry township for the last twenty-five years and was always known as one of the prominent citizens of that community, the many friends now joining the sorrowing family in their grief. Besides his wife he leaves three children and two step-children. The funeral will be held Saturday morning at the Beaver Dam church and burial will be made in the Odd Fellows cemetery at Akron. ---------------------------------- We believe that John P. Ream married Rachel Biddle in Fulton County, Indiana 22 February 1857 as there is a marriage recorded for that couple in Marriage Book A, Page 514. She died before he did and that is why she is not named in his Will. They had at least one child who also was dead by the time John made his will. Good Morning Boschong Subscribers, On the last post about Catharine Bushong who married Abraham Ream, we said that we thought that most of this family had died after the 1850 census and before 1860. Another Ream researchers says that isn't true. Armed with this new information and spending all of yesterday morning, afternoon and evening team researching, going back and forth with Phyllis, we both concur that for the moment, until otherwise proven incorrect, we are going with the following information as being Catharine Bushong, even though we have a few qualms with no definitive proof that Catharine Bushong Ream, widow, went to Fulton County, Indiana and married again to John Ault. According to the Ream researcher who submitted their information to Family Tree Maker, the following is true: ---------------------- Abraham J. Ream died 29 January 1852 in Stark County, Ohio. {We have nothing to prove this since all the newspapers that we put on the last post did not say deceased, except the reference to the sale of his land in 1855} This bothers me since according to this researcher the widow Catharine (Bushong) Ream married in Fulton County, Indiana 26 April 1853 before her husband's estate was even settled. ------------------------- We have called Stark County Ohio Probate and county library trying to track down the Will of Abraham Ream and his probate and neither has it (old records are kept at the county library in their genealogy room) and we learned that ALL of the chancery records for Stark County have been missing for about 30 years! The girl at the library says she believes someone threw them out and they did not keep any electronic records or microfilmed records of any of it. What idiot did that! ----------------------------- We called the Fulton County Indiana health department and courthouse who was very helpful and neither Catharine Ream's marriage nor her death records have any genealogical information that would help us establish that this woman in Fulton County, Indiana is Catharine Bushong who married Abraham Ream but we can't say that she isn't either since there is some evidence that she is. We are still hoping to find an obit on her. ------------------------------ CRONICHIALOGICAL ORDER OF EVENTS Stark County, OH - 1850 census: Abraham and wife Catharine (Bushong) Ream are in Stark County with their 6 children: John, Samuel, Abraham, Mary, Joseph, Lydia, and Adam. {Previous post} ------------------------------- Stark County, OH - Abraham Ream died 26 January 1852 but is called Abe J. Ream. Have found no place of burial nor death record in Stark County, Ohio. ---------------------------------- 14 August 1850 Fulton County, Indiana - A young man named Samuel Ream died at the age of 18 years 2 months 22 days and is buried in Fulton County cemetery. This might or might not be the son of Abraham Ream and Catharine Bushong. Samuel was enumerated with his parents in Stark County in September 1860, a month after this boy died in Fulton County so this may be a different Samuel and pure coincidence that two boys were born around the same time frame. ----------------------------------- Fulton County Indiana - A marriage took place on 26 April 1853 for Catherine Ream and John Ault No ages or parents given on marriage record according to the Fulton County clerk that I talked with. Oh shoot, this was supposed to go to just Phyllis and not the List as we are working together solving this marriage question of whether Catharine Bushong married to Abraham Ream, after his death, left Ohio and went to Fulton County, Indiana where she married a John Ault in April 1853. There were several Catherine Ream women born within a year of each other that were widows in Ohio so we have to make sure the information is correct before we put it out on the List. Gloria
In a message dated 1/27/2011 12:42:13 P.M. Eastern Standard Time, [email protected] writes: Abraham Ream died between June 1852 and March 1853. --------------------- Phyllis, It bothers me that if Abraham Ream didn't die until March of 1853, and I really don't know for a fact, that he did die then, but if he did, would she have married a month later? Back in those days to be proper, they went in to mourning for at least a year before marrying. Even if he had died in June of 1852, that window of 1 year would be cutting it pretty close. Just saying.......You could be right. I am approaching this with much caution. It looks good but needs to be totally proven with a slam dunk. I'm calling the courthouse now. Gloria
Boschong Subscribers, Have several irons in the fire going at once. Doing some research with a fellow researcher on Catharine Bushong who married Abraham Ream trying to determine whether there is a possibility that Catharine married after the death of Abraham to an Ault and went to Indiana as we had found some information on Ancestry to that effect. Also working on establishing all of the children of John Bushong and Barbara Kreighbaum. I would appreciate some input on the List please about this subject. I have been trying to sort out the various Bushongs in Stark County to place those that belong to John Bushong and Barbara Kreighbaum as their children. While doing this, we are wondering if the daughter Christina age 22 in the 1850 census is the daughter Mary who married George Frank in 1850? Christina only shows up in that one 1850 census, there is no marriage or death date on her and no burial place. To add to this, the daughter Mary shows up no where in the 1850 census and yet we know she is the daughter of John and Barbara because she is named in her father's Will as Mary Frank. So is it too ridiculous to consider that Mary's full name was Mary Christina Bushong who married George Frank even though Mary never used a middle initial? It would not be the first census record for Bushongs where they used one first name in one census and a middle name in the next. We spent all of this morning going through various census records page by page for 1810 trying to find John and Barbara in Ohio or Northumberland County, PA. We did not find him in Northumberland as head of a household but we did find George Persong/Bushong. I believe I have address him on the List before as I believed that he was connected to John of Stark County. We also found some men with misspelled names that could be Bushongs, one of which could be John Bushong of Stark County. Those names are: John Bounson, John Brusson, John Delong, Daniel Bouson, Jacob, Peter, George, Daniel & Andrew Bostian, Jacob, Samuel and John Delong, Jacob Roshong, William, Mathias, and Philip Persing. Most of the names that show up in Stark County in the next census are in Northumberland County, PA in 1810 and one name really caught out eye because of something we had put on the List sometime ago. The surname Brosious. Here are all of the early census records for John Bushong and wife Barbara showing the number of children and their age range and sexes. Would love to have some discussion on the List about whether all of these children are theirs and if so, what makes you believe that to be the case. Is there any paperwork evidence? Can we reconcile all of the children with the various census records, starting with the 1820? The only ones we definitely have a slam dunk on are Andrew, Mary, Barbara, Elizabeth, John and Jonathan although we are still pondering over two boys being named John and Jonathan in the same family. While in infancy his father was called away by death, and before he had attained the age of four years, he was deprived of his mother's care by the same stern messenger. His early training devolved entirely on an aunt, with whom he remained until he was fourteen years of age, when he was apprenticed to the cabinet maker's trade. In 1812, he was drafted into the Germany army, and continued to serve his country with faithfulness while England and Germany were allied against France, and until the final downfall of Napoleon. During his army life he saw many of the prominent men of that day; among them were the Duke of Wellington, the hero of Waterloo, and his much beloved LaFayette. The year after he was released from service (1816), he united in marriage with Miss Eva Weimer, and with her resided in Hoffen, until 1837 when he embarked for America. Upon his arrival in this country he located in Lake township, where he spent thirty four years of his life. In October, 1870, his faithful wife died. After the death of his wife he went to live with his son GEORGE (our subject), and with him remained until 27 February 1881, when he was called to his final home, at the age of 87 years. Early in life he associated himself with the Lutheran Church and continued a faithful member to the end. GEORGE FRANK, the subject of this sketch, was born in ALSACE, FRANCE, 2 May 1829, and in 1837 came to Stark County, with his parents. He attended the common schools of his neighborhood, where he acquired a good education, and at the age of 21, he engaged in farming for himself, and in this continued for ten years. In 1850, he engaged in the stock business, dealing in sheep, wholly, and has been engaged in the same up to the present time. In 1850 he married MISS MARY BUSHONG, of Lake Township. From that union there has been 6 children, 4 of whom are living, viz: EMELINE, MILTON G. WILLIAM J. AND JOHN C. Mr. and Mrs. Frank are devout church members; he is a Democrat in politics, and has been identified with many positions of trust, which he faithfully filled. ---------------- Researched and Submitted by Gloria Bushong
Boschong Subscribers, We could find very little on Catharine Bushong of Stark County, Ohio and her family. We believe that Catharine and her husband Abraham were both dead by the 1860 census. Here is what we did find. We suspect she is the daughter of John Bushong and Barbara Kreighbaum but no real document to make this a slam dunk. Abraham Ream Jr.'s father Abraham Ream Sr. died in 1834. The Ream family go back to Pennsylvania and served in the Revolutionary War. They came to Stark County, Ohio the same time as John Bushong and wife Barbara.
