    1. [BOSCHONG] George W. Bushong, s/o James Bushong & Nancy Collis - KY, IN, IL
    2. Boschong Subscribers, It seems like every time I am searching for one subject, I fall into something else of interest. Here is what we found on George W. Bushong, son of James M. Bushong and second wife Nancy Collings. Because of what we have found here, it answers a few questions from a previous post about Nancy Collings Bushong. No wonder we couldn't find a death record on her in Indiana, she left Indian. After the death of her husband James Bushong in Indiana, she moved with her son George W. Bushong to Knox County, Illinois where she died after the 1910 census. Back on 10 October 2009 we posted about George's father, James M. Bushong who was the son of John Andrew Bushong and Feraby White Hutchens. James married twice to girls named Nancy. (See that previous post in October 2009) Nancy maiden name is spelled many ways in various records anything from Collings/Collins/Collis. We are pretty sure that her maiden name was Collings. --------------------------- 1850 Federal Census: Kentucky No Township Named, Monroe County Enumerated 26 & 27 August 1850 Page 410B, Line 42 and Page 411A, Lines 1-5, HH 593/622 Andrew Bushong 58/Male/Farmer/$200/VA Feraby Bushong 55/Female/VA James Bushong 23/Male/Farmer/$200/KY William Bushong 21/Male/Farmer/KY Mary Bushong 18/Female/KY Frederick Bushong 16/Male/AttendedSchool/KY Next door: Andrew D. 2. Good Morning Boschong Subscribers, I heard from the secretary of Cedar Grove Methodist Church who graciously volunteered to go to the cemetery to clean and look at the tombstone for Joseph Sylvester Bushong. THANK YOU DONNA! After she cleaned it off and read it, she says it is definitely him, but has no dates on the tombstone. It is a military marker. On the site INTERMENT they have his name transcribed as James S. Bushman which is totally incorrect. Here is the true transcribed information directly from the tombstone of which I have a photo that the secretary sent to me. This information is verified by Diane who subscribes to our List. Cedar Grove Methodist Church Cemetery East of Parkersburg, Wood County, West Virginia JOS. S. BUSHON Co F 2 WVA Cav That's it. This would be the Joseph Sylvester Bushong, son of Daniel Bushong and Elizabeth Amens/Amend and husband of Caroline Matilda Hall. Gloria Bushong

    1. [BOSCHONG] Nancy Margaret Bushong married Michael O'Brien - Hardin County, Ohio
    2. Boschong Subscribers, Does anyone recognize the Bushong family below? This is all I could find on them so I have no idea who Mary's Bushong husband was or the father of this Nancy. This really peaked our interest since Mary Ann O'Brien Bushong of Tennessee that we recently posted about and daughter of George Bushong has that O'Briend middle name. Mary Ann O'Brien Bushong was never married until she married William Bruce Deery. Some how we believe there is a connection with this Ohio family, we just don't know how. And no, this is not the Nancy daughter of Jacob Bushong and Rebecca Everingham as that is a totally different Nancy. --------------------------- 1860 Federal Census: Ohio Taylor Creek Township, PO Hudson, Hardin County Enumerated 7 July 1860 Page 330A Lines 13-15, HH 503/486 Mary Bushong 52/Female/Sewing/-----$50/OH NANCY BUSHONG 16/Female/OH Mary Bushong 6/Female/OH ----------------------------- Hardin County Ohio Marriages Nancy Margaret Bushong and Michael O'Brien Married 9 August 1861 --------------------------------- 1870 Federal Census: Ohio McDonald Township, PO Belle Centre Logan County, Hardin County Enumerated 21 June 1870 Page 460B Lines 28-29, HH 82/82 Michael O'Brien 36/Male/White/Farmer/-----$500/Ireland/ParentsForeignBorn NANCY O'BRIEN 26/Female/White/KeepingHouse/MotherForeignBorn/OH -------------------------------- Researched and Submitted by Gloria Bushong

    2. In a message dated 2/8/2011 5:07:46 P.M. Eastern Standard Time, [email protected] writes: Mary Ann Bushong, daughter of George Bushong and Sarah Pyle married William Bruce Derry. She died 12 February 1892 at 66 years of age. Derry White/Male/54/Brother/Single/TN/Ireland/TN ------------------------ Well, Phyllis pointed out that she thought the name was Deery so we went searching the tombstones in Sullivan County and found them under that spelling. We hadn't found them under Derry and wondered why. We had found that Derry spelling in a published book on deaths in Sullivan County, TN when we had copied a page from the library in Sullivan County on one of our many trips to Tennessee and Virginia. We found them buried in the BLOUNTSVILLE CEMETERY in Sullivan County, Tennessee. Since all three died within days of each other, whatever they died from must have been very communicable. Think I'll look for obits on them. William Bruce Deery and his brother Robert Eakin Deery were the sons of William Deery and wife Elizabeth. BLOUNTSVILLE CEMETERY Sullivan County, Tennessee WILLIAM BRUCE DEERY Died 9 February 1892 Aged 68 years MARY ANN O'BRIEN DEERY Died 12 February 1892 Aged 58 years {NOTE: Website stated 58 as her age but this couldn't be correct and may be a typo error, based on the 1880 census record above where she is already 54 unless he married two women named Mary Ann which is highly unlikely. We have no idea where the O'Brien fits in since Mary Ann Bushong never married an O'Brien. A family name somewhere back in time? I wonder if this was added by a researcher and not part of her tombstone. This probably needs to be checked in person} ROBERT EAKIN DEERY Died 14 February 1892 Aged 62 years ------------------------- Researched and Submitted by Gloria Bushong

    1. [BOSCHONG] Marriage of Lillian E. Minta Bushong & Isaac Conrad Peters, Sullivan County, TN
    2. Boschong Subscribers, We found a newspaper article announcing the marriage of Lillian E. Minta Bushong, d/o of Joseph William Bushong and wife Letitia Benham to Isaac Conrad Peters, son of Martin L. Peters and Sarah Elizabeth Mills. When the newspaper article appeared in 1911, Joseph was on his third marriage so the Mrs. Bushong in the article would have been Lillian's step-mother Ada Eleanor Davenport as her biological mother S. Letitia (Benham) Bushong had died in 1888 when Lillian was just a baby. 1. [BOSCHONG] Clearing up a few errors in the family of Joseph Sylvester Bushong, Wood Co, WVA
    2. Boschong Subscribers, The newspaper article in the Shenandoah Herald is definitely not this Joseph, so I wonder who that Joseph Bushong could be? There are a few errors in the research of Joseph Sylvester Bushong and wife Caroline Matilda Hall that we are determined to straighten out. First of all they had two daughters, one of which was Ethel who died in 1890 in West Virginia and the other Estella "Stella" who died in 1912 in Cleveland, Ohio. The girl buried in Beauchamp Cemetery in 1890 is not Stella but Ethel Bushong and the girl buried in 1912 at Lake View Cemetery in Cleveland, Ohio is Estella "Stella" Bushong. We believe the information on the website for the Beauchamp Cemetery in Wirt County, West Virginia is incorrect. Here is what they have: Website for BEAUCHAMP CEMETERY Wirt County, West Virginia State Route 14 in Elizabeth near Tucker Creek Stella Bushong {NOTE: This should be Ethel} 1884 1890 Chester Arthur Bushong Died 5 October 1890 We need to find out where this information came from. Was it submitted by a researcher, read from the actual tombstone since it is not correct. We do know that Estella "Stella" Bushong, d/o of Joseph Sylvester Bushong and Caroline Matilda (Hall) Bushong died in Cleveland, Ohio in 1912 and is buried at Lake View Cemetery. That is a given as we have seen her death certificate. --------------------------- Diane sent me this: ESTELLA (STELLA), b. 9/7/1884 in Parkersburg, WV, d. 2/3/1912 in Huron Road Hospital, Cleveland, OH, d. from complications of appendicitis, buried in Lake View Cemetery in Cleveland, OH, clerk, on 1900 census she is living with Christopher Wells' family in Liverpool, Columbiana Co., OH as a boarder, decorator of pottery ETHEL, b. 12/20/1886 in Wirt Co., WV, d. 10/15/1890, d. of croup, buried in Beauchamp Cemetery, Wirt Co., WV [website says Stella} ------------------------------- Meanwhile here is a transcription of a copy of the death record for Joseph Sylvester Bushong and Caroline Matilda Hall. Note that it states that Jos. Bushon was born in Pennsylvania which is strange since all the census state Ohio. I called the Cedar Grove Methodist Church in Parkersburg, and talked to their secretary who was extremely nice and is going to look to see if the church kept a cemetery book for Cedar Grove Cemetery plus she is going to the cemetery sometime this week to do a rubbing to see if the fellow buried there is Joseph Sylvester Bushong. The tombstone is in bad shape and according to FindAGrave has another name on it. ------------------------- Death Registry of Parkersburg, Wood County, West Virginia Page 244, Entry #18 NAME: Jos. 1. [BOSCHONG] Joseph Bushong living in New Market, Virginia - 1908
    2. Good Morning Boschong Subscribers, In our last posts we said that we had no idea when Joseph Sylvester Bushong died as the last census we could find on him was the 1880 census when he was living in Wirt County, West Virginia. We found this very interesting newspaper article in the Shenandoah Herald for 1908, that may or may not be this Joseph. To put this in perspective, there was no Joseph Bushong that lived in New Market or the surrounding area who had grown daughters during this era that we are aware of. If this is Joseph Sylvester Bushong, when this 1908 article was written, he must have lived there a short time. He would have been about 68 years old so this is not out of the realm of possibility. I looked back in Mattie's diaries to see if she made mention of this incident happening since she lived in New Market, knew her Bushong relatives that had lived there a long time and usually made mention of any exciting incidents. There was no mention. Here were her entries for that Saturday and a couple of days after. --------------------------- DIARIES OF MATTIE BUSHONG GOOD (Daughter of Anderson Bushong and Delilah Bowen) Saturday, September 12 (1908) - Clear and real warm. Uncle and I went to Harrisonburg this morning. Mama and Evla taken us to the depo and Mr. Rupps came to meet us. I ate dinner at Mrs. Eliza Goods. Sunday, September 13 - Clear. Nice day getting real dusty. We all drove out to the new school building to preaching this afternoon. Monday, September 14 - Some cloudy and real smokey all day. They are having a moon light picnic down at brother Jakes tonight. ------------------------------ The Shenandoah Herald Woodstock, Virginia Friday 18 September 1908 Page 3, Column 3 RUNAWAY AT NEW MARKET Saturday night an exciting runaway occurred in New Market, when a double team belonging to Mr. Joseph Bushong became frightened and ran off. In the carriage at the time were two of Mr. Bushong's daughters and a lady friend of the Misses Bushong. The terrified animals had not run far until the vehicle collided with a telephone pole, the carriage was upset, and the ladies thrown into the street. Friends quickly ran to their rescue and found that while all three bad been badly bruised, none had sustained any serious injury. The vehicle was badly damaged, but the horses were stopped after a short run and neither was hurt. -------------------------- Researched and Submitted by Gloria Bushong
