Boschong Subscribers, Even a seasoned researcher can make a mistake. LOL. The mystery has been solved thanks to a subscriber who questioned the information I had posted about the boy being the son of Andrew and Sarah since he is not in the household in the 1850 census. Thank you for questioning, John. The guy in the article IS in the household of Andrew and Sarah in 1850, but his name is Julian C. Bushong. I got to thinking about the article so I went back to the newspaper to see if I had copied it correctly and after blowing it up even bigger then I had when I originally copied it, discovered that I had missed a comma and the names should read Robert Ray, J. Bushong, which means that Robert Ray was a separate man from J. Bushong. So now it makes better sense and it looks like the son Julian C. Bushong went west with Clifton A. Ogden and here is the way the article should read: The Puget Sound Herald Steilacoom, Washington Territory Thursday Morning, 31 July 1862 Page 2, Column 2 THE OVERLAND EMIGRATION FOR THE FAR WEST A Company of twenty-five persons, principally from Ohio, left this city on Tuesday last, (the 8d) for the Salmon, Burnt and Powder River gold mines, situated in Eastern Oregon and Washington Territory. The following are the names of the party: Mr. and Mrs. Hiram Smith, Charles Coffinberry, Miss C. Coffingberry, Miss M. McClung, Miss E. Tubbs, Robert Ray, J. BUSHONG, Clifton A. Ogden, Peter Swein, T. Lord, Findlay, Ohio; Mr. and Mrs. Platt Fish, Four Corners, Ohio; Mr. and Mrs. Sawyer and J. E. Sawyer, Sandusky, NY; Miss Hattie E. Smith, Bellevue, Ohio; Mrs. L. E. Cooke and daughter, East Toledo, Ohio; D. H. Jones, Salem, Oregon; George Robinson, Flint, Michigan; Mrs. J. Beach, Connecticut; Mrs. E. Tracy, Buffalo, NY; Kennedy Mordis, Tuscarawas County, Ohio. The company had the finest outfit we have seen this season. The stock consisted of very fine mules and ponies; two coaches and several wagons, and no doubt they will make excellent time between Leavenworth and the new El Dorado. They go via Salt Lake, and expect to arrive at Salmon river by the 20th of August. It will be fortunate for that new country if it is settled by an energetic people as this company is composed of. It is good to see the ladies go into a new Territory---they carry civilization and refinement wherever they go; their influence is always appreciated in the "diggings." The train is in charge of Captain Smith, who has crossed the Plains several times; the first in 1845. ----------------------- Researched and Submitted by Gloria Bushong
Back in April 2009, I posted about Andrew Bushong, who I now believe, is the father of this boy. His mother was Sarah Wesley. He must not have lived long after going West in 1862, thus not mentioned in any family history. This was a tragic family as another son Orange was killed in the Civil War. Orange E. Bushong Born: 28 September 1847, Hancock County, Ohio Died: 27 May 1864, Battle of Pickett's Mill, Paulding County, Georgia. This mill was owned by Malachi Pickett and was located near Marietta, Georgia. Burial: He most likely is buried in Marietta Georgia National Cemetery with all the other soldiers who died in that awful battle. ----------------------- The Daily Jeffersonian Findlay, Ohio 21 July 1884 Page 4 MRS. SARAH BUSHONG Mrs. Sarah, wife of A. Bushong, died at the family residence on East Main Cross Street at 8 o'clock Saturday morning, aged about 64 years. The funeral services were held at the residence at 3 o'clock on Sunday afternoon and the remains were interred in Maple Grove Cemetery. The pall bearers were William France, William Marvin, Josiah Smith, William Thompson, S. C. Groves and C. A. Croninger. ----------------------- Researched and Submitted by Gloria Bushong
Is it possible that Robert Ray J. or I. Bushong could be the son of Andrew Bushong and Sarah Wesley? We posted about Andrew Bushong back in April 2009 and it included his Will. This boy is not named in that Will but if he went west, he probably wouldn't have been. Also we don't know what happened to him, he might have died on the way west or shortly thereafter, since we could not find him anywhere. Gloria
Boschong Subscribers, Here may be a clue as to the relationship of Robert Ray J. Bushong. We found several Clifton Ogden's living in Findlay in 1860, one an adult and one a child. The boy, Clifton Ogden was living in the household of Andrew Bushong and wife Sarah. However, going page by page of Findlay, I did not find Robert Ray J. Bushong or even a name close to that. 1860 Federal Census: Ohio Findlay Town and Township, Hancock County Enumerated 5 July 1860 Page 62B Lines 17-23, HH 867/842 Andrew Bushong 44/Male/White/Stove&TinMerchant/$6000-$8000/OH Sarah Bushong 39/Female/White/OH Julian C. Ogden with a wife and children but we have ruled him out as the fellow on the wagon train west because his wife and children were not named as part of the wagon train. The Clifton Ogden on the train and in the household above could be his son thought or at the least some relative. We did find a Bushong boy, Isaac Bushong age 18, also living in Findlay with a non Bushong family. It appears there are several Bushong children probably all from the same family, living in various households in Findlay. Possibly the father of these children was dead, so at this point, we still have not been able to identify Robert Ray J. Bushong. We are wondering if the typist for the newspaper mistook a J for an I as his initial and possibly his name was Robert Ray I. Bushong? Just a random thought. --------------------------- Researched and Submitted by Gloria Bushong

Good Evening Boschong Subscribers, We have decided to list all of the immigrants that we have found so far for the early Bushongs. Spelling on ships registers is awful. Remember that there were already two Bushongs, Henry and Jacob, on the tax rolls of Chester County, Pennsylvania for 1718 and 1719. Also as we studied the List of Immigrants for the Ship Britania for 1731 there was a Bushong missed! Good Morning Boschong Subscribers, While searching on information for another family, I ran across Mary Ida Loretta Bushong and her husband James McFarland. She is the daughter of Henry W. Bushong and Nancy Saviers. See BOSCHONG Archives for August 2009. There were a lot of McFarlands in South Dakota. I could trace James and Ida in census records except the 1880. I went page by page through Johnson County and could not find them. Her sister Keturah and husband were in Franklin Township, Franklin County, Kansas but some of the pages of this township are missing on Ancestry so possibly that is where they are living in the 1880 census. After the death of James, Ida is found living in Kansas City, Kansas in 1910. We don't know what happened after that census as we can find no burial records. We did find a Paul Richard Bushong who served in World War I, married Ada E. Collins and lived in South Dakota but not sure whether this is the same family as this. We will show it anyway, just in case. John or someone else possibly has researched and can make corrections if there are any to make and fill us in on additional information. ----------------------- History of State of Kansas A. T. Andreas Chicago, Illinois 1883 H. W. BUSHONG, contractor and builder, was born in Columbiana County, Ohio, October 11, 1831. He learned the blacksmith's trade there, serving as an apprentice some sixteen months; then working as a journeyman, and carrying on the business for eight years. After which he learned the trade of carpenter and builder in Richland County, Ohio, following it there until he came to Kansas, in March, 1866, since which time he has been engaged in his present business as a contractor and builder. Among the prominent buildings he has erected here are the Methodist Episcopal Church, Baptist Church, Harris & Co.'s Bank building, J. E. Clark & Son and Walker Bros.' business houses, Olathe Central School building, costing $13,100, and many others. Mr. Bushong was elected Representative of the Second Ward in the City Council in the spring of 1878, and again in 1881. He was married in Richland County, Ohio, September 22, 1853, to Nancy Saviers. Boschong Subscribers, Sometimes I let my frustration come through on the List and I want to apologize for that. Researching can be very tedious and difficult and even when you think you have it correct, it may not be. I now realize that I was responsible for continuing the error of Elizabeth (May) Bushong's father being David Ford by putting her death certificate on the List back in January 2008. I should have checked it out a little further before I posted it. I think at the time I was more interested in finding out how her grandson Charles Bowen was related to the Battlefield Bushongs. >From now on, I will just try to stick to the facts without commentary unless it is necessary. Gloria Bushong
Glenn L. Bushong is buried in Crest Lawn Cemetery, Atlanta, Georgia in Section 19, Lot 74. For anyone that is visiting the cemetery, it is very large and stopping in the office to obtain a map, is not a bad idea. Gloria
Boschong Subscribers, There is some misinformation floating around on the net on various sites including FINDAGRAVE. Samuel Lindsley Bushong was married to Elizabeth "Lizzie" May, born 17 March 1845 to John May and Martha McCollister. Elizabeth's maiden name was MAY not FORD. Her mother married twice and David Ford was her second marriage. We know her death certificate states her father as David Ford, but that just isn't correct as it was John May. The informant on that certificate was her grandson Charles Bowen who probably didn't know his great grandmother had married twice. Also Elizabeth May was NOT born in December 1842 as an Ancestry researcher claims. That would be her husband Samuel who was born 31 December 1842. Elizabeth (May) Bushong was born 17 March 1845 in Huron County, Ohio. Please make that correction if you have been copying info out there submitted by people who are doing sloppy research. We have posted before about what might be the mother of Samuel Lindsley Bushong so check the BOSCHONG Archives for May 2009, June 2009 and August 2009 for further information. The reason I say MIGHT BE the mother is because I am not totally convinced that this Samuel Lindsley Bushong is the son of Jacob Bushong and Hannah Clark. He shows up in no census records with her. Samuel age 17 the son of this couple, was appointed a Guardian in 1860 and then he resigned shortly after. It is possible that this Samuel died and this is the reason he resigned. But until I can find more documentation, we'll leave it as is. --------------- SAMUEL LINDSLEY BUSHONG Born: 31 December 1842, Ohio, possibly the son of Jacob Bushong and Hannah Clark Died: 29 April 1914, Forest Village, Hardin County, Ohio Burial: 5 May 1914, Hueston Cemetery, Forest Village, Hardin County, Ohio Married: Elizabeth "Lizzie" May Born: 17 March 1845, New Haven, Huron County, Ohio, d/o John May and Martha McCollister Died: 8 October 1932, Forest Village, Hardin County, Ohio Burial: 10 October 1932, Hueston Cemetery, Forest Village, Hardin County, Ohio --------------- 1850 Federal Census: Could not find Samuel Lindsley Bushong anywhere!
