    1. Re: [BOSCHONG] Parents of Adaline Brubaker married to William A. Bushong - Co...
    2. Good Evening Boschong Subscribers, Further research has yield the 1830 census for Emanuel Brubaker and wife Elizabeth Rodeffer and their children in Shenandoah County and a few more details which may be of interest to those who are Hottel descendants. It is interesting how family stories are spun. In the John Hottell book on Page 378 is the following: "2194-c EMANUEL BRUBAKER, son of Abraham and Anna (Hottel) Brubaker, b. at Saumsville, Va., about 1786; m. Elizabeth Rodeffer, dau. of Samuel, from whom she received a legacy in 1833. Emanuel received 34 acres by his father by will being a part of a tract of 201 acres, which was formerly a grant to his grandfather, Charles Hottel, by Lord Thomas Fairfax, 8 June 1751. He was executor of his father's will. He resided in Saumsville, and was a chair maker by trade. On 13 March 1833, he and his wife sold to Daniel Saum what seems to have been their homeplace. They were buried on the farm of James H. Spiker. Their graves are marked with rocks bearing no inscriptions. There were no descendants. The name "Emanuel" has been handed down several generations in other families in honor of this man." We refute some of this information as we know for a fact that after Emanuel and Elizabeth (Rodeffer) Brubaker sold their homestead in 1833, they removed to Columbiana County, Ohio with their four children. I believe that they are probably buried in the old Reformed Cemetery in Columbiana County along with a lot of the other Valley people who left Virginia at the same time. ------------------- Here is the 1830 census record for Daniel Emanuel Brubaker which we believe proves that he and wife Elizabeth were living in Shenandoah County and that they did have children. I have not been able to find a marriage record for Daniel Emanuel Brubaker and wife Elizabeth Rodeffer as yet, but believe they probably married around 1808-09 era as I think their daughter Adaline was the oldest child. The minister might not have returned the records. CHILDREN OF DANIEL EMANUEL BRUBAKER AND ELIZABETH RODEFFER 1. Adaline Brubaker who married 27 September 1827 to William Abraham Bushong 2. Samuel Brubaker who married Lydia (Maiden name unknown) 3. Unidentified Female Brubaker 4. William Brubaker who seems to have married twice: M/1: Sarah, M/2: Mary ------------------- Adaline Brubaker and William Abraham Bushong were married in Shenandoah County 27 September 1827 so that is why she is not in the 1830 census with her parents. -------------------- 1830 Federal Census: Virginia Western District, Shenandoah County Page 50 MANUEL BRUBAKER {Daniel Emanuel Brubaker} 1 male under 5 years of age {Son William Brubaker} 1 male 15 and under 20 years of age {Son Samuel Brubaker} 1 male 40 and under 50 years of age {Head of household Daniel Emanuel Brubaker} 1 female 15 and under 20 years of age {Unidentified daughter} 1 female 40 and under 50 years of age {Wife Elizabeth} 1 female 70 and under 80 years of age {Mother of either Daniel Emanuel or Elizabeth} -------------------------- According to the Shenandoah County Deed records, Emanuel Brubaker and wife Elizabeth executed a Deed for their land in Shenandoah County 13 March 1833 to their brother-in-law Daniel Saum. We believe this is when they removed from Shenandoah County, Virginia with their children and went to Columbiana County, Ohio. If they are buried on their former property in Shenandoah County as the book states, then their bodies were brought back from Ohio for burial but why on the Spiker property? Makes no sense whatsoever. According to the Hottel book Emanuel Brubaker was born about 1786 which is the exact age of Daniel Emanuel Brubaker of the census records below and the name of his wife is Elizabeth. ----------------------------- 1840 Federal Census: Ohio Columbiana County EMANUEL BRUBAKER {Daniel Emanuel Brubaker} 1 male 10 thru 14 years of age {Son William Brubaker} 1 male 50 thru 59 years of age {Head of household Daniel Brubaker of the 1850 census} 1 female 50 thru 59 years of age {Wife Elizabeth Brubaker} 1 engaged in manufacturing and trade Same land SAMUEL BRUBAKER 1 Male 20 thru 29 years of age {Son Samuel Brubaker} 2 female 20 thru 29 years of age 1 engaged in manufacturing and trade --------------- 1850 Federal Census: Ohio Fairfield Township, Columbiana County Enumerated 7 October 1850 Page 83A & 83B Lines 42 & 1-8, HH 418/424 & 419/425 Daniel Brubaker 64/Male/Chairmaker/$300/VA {Father of Adaline Brubaker Bushong} Elizabeth Brubaker 64/Female/VA {Mother of Adaline Bushong} William Brubaker 23/Male/Shoemaker/VA {William of the Deed} Sara Brubaker 27/Female/PA {Probably William's 1st wife probably died before Deed was executed} Lemuel Brubaker 27/Male/Chairmaker/$800/VA {Samuel of the Deed} Lydia Brubaker 32/Female/PA {Samuel's wife and Lydia of the Deed} Susanah Brubaker 7/Female/AttendedSchool/OH Emanuel Brubaker 6/Male/AttendedSchool/OH Lorenzo Brubaker 2/Male/OH ----------------- Researched and Submitted by Gloria Bushong

    2. Boschong Subscribers, We found this a little interesting. Henry Bushong, son of William A. Bushong and Adaline Brubaker was living at home in the 1850 census, but also might have been enumerated with David and Louisa Neidig unless there were two Henry Bushong's born in the same year with the same occupation. We are just wondering why, if there was just one Henry Bushong, he would have been enumerated in the household of David Neidig just three days after he was, with his parents. ------------------- 1850 Federal Census: Ohio Fairfield Township, Columbiana County Enumerated 4 October 1850 Page 81A Lines 13-21, HH 390/395 William A. 1. [BOSCHONG] Parents of Adaline Brubaker married to William A. Bushong - Columbiana Co. OH
    2. Good Evening Boschong Subscribers, I have posted some of William Abraham Bushong and wife Adaline Brubaker so check BOSCHONG Archives for February 2007, November 2008, February 2009, March 2009 and November 2009 to refresh your memory on this couple. In January 2009, I posted a Deed on the List concerning Adaline (Brubaker) Bushong and William and Samuel Brubaker and wife Lydia. At the time I didn't know the relationship with the Brubaker's involved in this Deed although I suspected they were all siblings. John asked who these people were as he didn't know either. I promised that I would keep on it to find the answer and I have not been idle in my research on this. I think if memory recalls me, I told John at that time, that I thought that the Emanuel Brubaker living near Tom's Brook in the early land records and near the Bushongs very early on was probably the family of Adeline Brubaker who married William A. Bushong. I believe that I am correct on this and that some of these Brubakers were some of the group of Valley people who mass migrated to Columbiana County, Ohio pretty early on. I think that Emanuel Brubaker was probably the grandfather of Adaline, Samuel and William Brubaker of the Deed. Their parents were Daniel Brubaker and a wife Elizabeth. I am still searching for her maiden name. I think I can prove that Adaline Brubaker Bushong, William Brubaker and Samuel Brubaker were the oldest children of Daniel Brubaker and wife Elizabeth who are living in Columbiana County in 1850. The name Lemuel threw me for awhile but remembering my old naming, I do believe that Lemuel is a another name for Samuel in the Jewish naming so look over the information below and see what you think. I am not sure why they put Emanuel Brubaker as the head of the household as Daniel his father should have been listed, but back then boys became men a lot sooner and possibly the father was disabled in some way and had passed the gauntlet to his son unless the full name of Daniel was Daniel Emanuel Brubaker which is also possible. The Voglesongs were neighbors of the Brubakers of the Deed. 1840 Federal Census: Ohio Columbiana County EMANUEL BRUBAKER 1 male 10 thru 14 years of age {Son William Brubaker} 1 male 50 thru 59 years of age {Daniel Brubaker} 1 female 50 thru 59 years of age {Wife Elizabeth Brubaker} 1 engaged in manufacturing and trade Same land SAMUEL BRUBAKER 1 Male 20 thru 29 years of age {Son Samuel Brubaker} 2 female 20 thru 29 years of age 1 engaged in manufacturing and trade --------------- 1850 Federal Census: Ohio Fairfield Township, Columbiana County Enumerated 7 October 1850 Page 83A & 83B Lines 42 & 1-8, HH 418/424 & 419/425 Daniel Brubaker 64/Male/Chairmaker/$300/VA {Father of Adaline Bushong} Elizabeth Brubaker 64/Female/VA {Mother of Adaline Bushong} William Brubaker 23/Male/Shoemaker/VA {William of the Deed} Sara Brubaker 27/Female/PA {Probably William's wife probably died before Deed was executed} Lemuel Brubaker 27/Male/Chairmaker/$800/VA {Samuel of the Deed} Lydia Brubaker 32/Female/PA {Samuel's wife and Lydia of the Deed} Susanah Brubaker 7/Female/AttendedSchool/OH Emanuel Brubaker 6/Male/AttendedSchool/OH Lorenzo Brubaker 2/Male/OH ------------- 1850 Federal Census: Ohio Fairfield Township, Columbiana County Enumerated 4 October 1850 Page 81A Lines 13-21, HH 390/395 William A. 2. Boschong Subscribers, We have discovered something truly amazing. Back in April 2009, we posted about Andrew Bushon who we thought had married twice. We need to correct that as he was married three times and give a little more information we have found. With pleasure, we this week, chronicle the marriage of Mr. Andrew Bushon, a prominent and successful business man of Findlay, this State, to Mrs. Elizabeth Graham. The happy even occurred last Thursday noon at the pleasant residence of her son, Rev. J. H. Cronkle pronounced the mystic words which joined them together for life. The happy couple received the congratulations of those present, when dinner was announced and the party repaired to the dining room, where an elegant repast was in waiting. The wedded couple was then driven to the depot and boarded the train for their future home in Findlay. The JOURNAL extends its' heartiest congratulations and well wishes to Mr. and Mrs. Bushon, hoping that their journey through life may be as bright and happy as their wedding day. ---------------------- The New Lisbon Journal New Lisbon, Ohio 8 March 1886 Page 2, Column 2 DEATH OF MRS BUSHON A telegram Saturday from Findlay, Ohio, conveyed the sad intelligence of the death of Mrs. E. J. Bushong. Deceased, who was the widow of the late Dr. Albert G. Graham, of New Lisbon, was married to Mr. Bushong, of Findlay, about nine months ago. She had been quite ill for some weeks, and her son Dr. Frank Graham, of this place, was summoned to her bedside, and gave, her a loving and devoted son's constant care and attention, aided by all that medical skill could do, but all proved unavailing to stay the progress of a disease which baffled human skill to arrest. She was a woman of beautiful character, rich in those qualities that adorn womanhood, and gentle recollections come back to her friends laden with the sincerest sympathy and sorrow upon the intelligence of her death. Her remains will be brought her for interment and her funeral will take place at 3 o'clock this afternoon from the M. E. Church. -------------------- 1850 Federal Census: Ohio Pulaski Township, Williams County Enumerated 13 September 1850 Page 85A Lines 17-24, HH 256/263 William Yates 50/Male/Merchant/$5000/PA Mary Yates 47/Female/PA Margaret Yates 21/Female/OH Thomas Yates 19/Male/Clerk/AttendedSchool/OH Franklin Yates 17/Male/Clerk/AttendedSchool/OH John Yates 14/Male/AttendedSchool/OH JACINTHA YATES 12/Female/AttendedSchool/OH Samantha Yates 10/Female/AttendedSchool/OH -------------------- 1860 Federal Census: Ohio Brady, PO West Unity Township, Williams County Enumerated 15 June 1860 Page 139B Lines 1-2, HH 237/237 George Pierce 25/Male/DryGoodsMerchant/-----$2000/OH JACINTHA PIERCE 22/Female/OH ----------------- 1870 Federal Census: Ohio West Unity Township, Williams County Enumerated 2 June 1870 Page 17B Lines 3-6, HH 25/25 George H. 1. [BOSCHONG] More on the African American Bushon's in Ohio
    2. Boschong Subscribers, I have spent the last two weeks searching census records for the Bushon families. The 1860 census yielded a few of the Bushon clan. We were surprised that Clinton County, Ohio was full of Virginia descendants with familiar names. The name is misspelled in the early census so I was lucky to find what I have. If someone would like to take on a project of looking for the missing census records for the people below, I would sure appreciate the help. These Bushon all seem to tie together starting in Clinton County and moving in to a few other areas of Ohio including Columbus and Cincinnati. 1. [BOSCHONG] Edward Mark Bushong and one of his sons and grandson's - VA and Washington DC
    2. Good Morning Boschong Subscribers, I was contacted by a grandmother who was seeking information on the Bushongs for her grandsons. The lineage is through Edward Mark Bushong and wife Elizabeth C. "Bessie" Burner of Woodstock, Shenandoah County, Virginia. Check posts for August 2005, January 2009, July 2009, September 2009, December 2009, July 2010, and March 2011 for some of the posts related to the family below. There are a ton more. LINEAGE: Andrew Bushong and Elizabeth Calvert Henry M. Bushong and Mary Ann Wendel Edward Mark Bushong and Elizabeth C. "Bessie" Burner Henry Lacey "Harry" Bushong Sr. and Ida Hynda Perry Henry Lacey "Harry" Bushong Jr. and Florence Evaline Offutt Kathleen Ann Bushong and John Henry Moore Shannon Moore married unknown Pierce Kristopher and Dustin Pierce -------------------- Edward Mark Bushong had a home in Woodstock but it no longer exists. It was torn down and there is now a BP station there. He had other property he inherited just east of the town of Woodstock and that is where his barn was located. That was the land referred to in the post about the women's baseball game. I believe the barn still stands. The Shenandoah Herald Friday, 21 July 1893 Page 3, Column 3 The New York young Ladies Base Ball Club, a nine composed of expert young lady players, will cross bats with the Woodstock Club on Monday afternoon next, July 24th, at 4 o'clock. The game will be played in Bushong's field, adjoining Indian springs, the new park, on the south edge of town. The game will be an interesting one, as the ladies play ball with a vim that will give the Woodstock boys all they are looking for, and then some, Don't fail to see these handsome ladies bat the ball all over the gable end of creation, and show their twinkling feet as they fly around the bases. ------------------- 1870 Federal Census: Virginia Johnston Mag. A reception at the home of Mrs. Laws, on Court street, was held immediately after the ceremony. Mr. Bushong and his bride left Friday morning on a trip that will include Richmond, Old Point, Washington and other points. 1. [BOSCHONG] William M. Bushon b. 1834 of Tennessee - Slave to Freeman in Ohio
    2. Boschong Subscribers, Ancestry is airing a series called "WHO DO YOU THINK YOU ARE?" on Friday nights which has been very interesting and I hope you all are watching it. A recent episode about Lionel Richie's ancestor was especially interesting since his ancestor's owner was a doctor who educated his slave grandson and in his Will, freed the mother and child and left land on the plantation to them because his son had fathered Lionel's ancestor. This was way before the Civil War. I thought it was time to explore the slaves in Tennessee and Virginia owned by the Bushongs. Many of them after being freed took the Bushong surname as theirs. Where are those descendants today? What stories could they tell us? What stories can we share with them? Not all slave owners were not cruel taskmasters. Some were quite benevolent to their slaves and some secretly educated them. The Bushongs were among them. They felt that slavery was wrong but because of the system that was in place were powerless to do anything about it. Then Lincoln was elected and things changed. The Confederate Bushongs did not get into the Civil War to defend slavery. Before the war started they were unhappy because of the high taxes put on their crops by the north and the little profit they were making. When the war started and the Union troops came through the Valley burning their barns and homes and nearly starving them, they got mad and joined the Confederate troops to get them out of their beloved Valley. I was recently contacted by a man who has an old letter written by Union soldier named Albert P. Moulton who was writing to Mary Bushong near Woodstock. This would be Mrs. Henry Bushong, nee Mary Ann Wendel. Captain Moulton was inquiring as to what happened to their home and barn hoping that nothing had been burned by the Union forces as they came through the Valley. I do know that the slaves owned by the Bushongs were treated well and the family tried to keep them together as a family unit, in other words, they did not sell them outside of the family, and treated them as family since they were more house slaves then field slaves. There were three slaves with the Battlefield family Jacob Bushong and Sarah Strickler, an unnamed man, a female named Mary and a boy named Israel. We do not know what happened to them but we sure would like to know. The Bushongs that we know owned slaves were Henry, Philip, John, George and William Bushong. There may have been others. Henry Bushong owned a slave named Samuel in 1820 (See Boschong post for 9 September 2005) George owned a slave named John who was 27 years old in 1842. He sold him to his brother William to keep him in the family. John was freed and was found living in the 1880 census with Charly Crackell in Bristol, Tennessee at age 70. (See Boschong post for 29 November 2004) There is a Crackell living in Clinton County, Ohio where the family below lived so we know there is a connection here. Clinton County, Ohio is right next to Pickaway County, Ohio where the Bushong's, whose parents and grandparents in Virginia and Tennessee had owned slaves, settled around 1812. Philip Bushong and wife Mary Ellen Dryden owned slaves who made beautiful quilts that were treasured by the Bushong family. (See Boschong post 16 August 2009) John Bushong of Powell's Fort owned 24 slaves in 1820 but we do not know what happened to them. He might have freed them before he died since there is no mention of them in his estate in 1840. With that said, here may be some of the descendants of those slave families who we believe were owned by the Bushongs, Philip, George and William in Tennessee. The Bushongs lived on the border near Bristol which was in both Sullivan County, Tennessee and Washington County, Virginia. They owned mining land and a forge/foundry called Bushongs forge. The Bushong family were very prominent in the Underground Railroad running slaves through their various homes to help them escape cruel slave owners, helping them work their way from the deep south through Tennessee and Virginia, to Ohio and Pennsylvania. Some stayed in Ohio and some went on to the West to Indiana, Illinois, Iowa and Washington Territory. ------------------------- Notice the value of the land and money that William Bushon has in 1870. 1870 Federal Census: Ohio Clark Township, PO Farmers Station, Clinton County Enumerated 15 June 1870 Page 486A Lines 13-18, HH 272/286 William Bushon 35/Male/Black/Farmer/$6250-$680/TN Letta Bushon 35/Female/Black/KeepsHouse/VA Mary Ann Bushon 4/Female/Black OH Doreatha Bushon 2/Female/Black/OH Ardella Bushon 9mosBornOctober/Female//Black/OH William Bushon 14/Male/Black/FarmLaborer/VA ----------------------- 1880 Federal Census: Ohio Jefferson Township, ED 58, Clinton County Enumerated (No day given) June 1880 Page 83B Lines 9-16, HH 132/140 William Bushon Black/Male/45/Farmer/Married/TN/VA/TN Letta Bushon Black/Female/40/Wife/KeepingHouse/OH/VA/VA Mary Bushon Black/Female/14/Dau/AttendedSchool/OH/TN/OH Ruth Bushon Black/Female/12/Dau/AttendedSchool/OH/TN/OH Ardella Bushon Black/Female/10/Dau/AttendedSchool/OH/TN/OH Carrie Bushon Black/Female/8/Dau/AttendedSchool/OH/TN/OH Clara Bushon Black/Female/8/Dau/AttendedSchool/OH/TN/OH Frederick Martin Black/Male/43/Boarder/Single/Farmer/OH/TN/OH -------------------------- Clinton County Ohio Marriages Bride: Ruth Bushon age 17, d/o William Bushon Groom: Isaac Dillon Married: 3 May 1885 ---------------------------- The News-Herald Hillsboro, Highland County, Ohio 12 January 1888 Page 5, Column 6 COMMON PLEAS COURT Isma Freth VS William Bushon et al. 1. [BOSCHONG] John Tolbert Bushong Sr - Letters
    2. Boschong Subscribers, John Tolbert Bushong Sr. was passionate about starting a Bible School in Florida. He wrote many letters to various people in hopes of achieving his goal. Gainesville, Florida is in Alachua County, Florida and eventually there was a school established there under the guidance of Latimore but it went bankrupt. ---------------------- This letter was written by John Tolbert Bushong Sr. while in Myakka, Manatee County, Florida Miakka, Florida 16 July 1908 Mr. B. R. Colson Gainesville, Florida Dear Brother, Bro. H. J. Miller of Bowling Green, Ky requests that I write you relative to visiting your city to investigate it with a view to establish a college there. He tells me he has put our plans before you so I suppose you understand. If I am to visit Gainsville I should be glad to do so about the latter part of August. I should like to hear from you. I am to leave here about the 23rd for Ft. Meade where I shall be for about ten day. You might address me there. Your brother in Christ. J. T. Bushong ----------------------- This letter was written by John Tolbert Bushong Sr. while in Safety Harbor, Pinellas County, Florida Safety Harbor, Fla., 26 August 1908 Mr. B. R. Colson Gainesville, Fla. Dear Bro., I have been and am still so situated I can not visit your place now; can't say just when I can; will let you know later. Keep the school idea before the minds of your people. Yours Fraternally J. T. Bushong --------------------- This letter was written while by John Tolbert Bushong Sr. in Safety Harbor, Pinellas County, Florida Safety Harbor, Fla 20 January 1909 Mr. B. R. Colson Gainsville, Fla. My dear Bro. I have just received a letter from Bro. N. A. Jones, Highland Home. Alabama, relative to our school. He states he had expected a letter from you but had not yet received it. I had expected you have written some of those brethren before now but do no remember that I gave you the above address. Will you please write Bro. Jones at once. I shall send his letter to you. Please explain to him why the school closed at Bartow. I thought I had told him but guess I did not make it clear. I have an option on the Bartow property till the last of January but do not see now how we can close a deal by that time. I hope you and family are well. I so often think of the pleasant stay I had with you. How is Sister Bowers? How did young Bowers (I forgot his name) come out in the contest--in front I hope. I guess you know I started to Gainsville the 14th. Cant' understand why the Dir. {Director's} letter was not mailed till the 12th and that at Jacksonville. I sure did "miss put me." I have but five more weeks of school. With best wishes and Christian love to you and family. I beg to remain. Yours fraternally, J. T. Bushong --------------------- This letter was written by John Tolbert Bushong Sr. while in Hernando, Citrus County, Florida Hernando, Fla. 30 April 1910 Mr. B. R. Colson Gainsville, Florida Dear Bro., I made my trip to Hernando all O. K. am one week nearer the close of my school. (Yes and one week nearer Eternity.) My wife is still sick though she may come home on the night train. I trust you survived that splendid feast that was awaiting your return. Judging from the splendid sample, which I had by the kindness of Sister Colson, I feel quite sure it was well for me that I did not stay. I have a voracious appetite. See? Many thanks sister Colson, that lunch was perfect. Truly, I enjoyed my trip to your city, to your home and to the congregation. Brother, enclosed please find my questions addressed to the Nashville School and the answers. The same questions were sent to Bro. Johnson. You see his reply. Can't we do the same in Fla? If you think it worth while, put these things before the church, then sometime when you are writing please return same to me. I believe by the grace of God we can build a School in the state that will reflect credit to the founders and glory and honor to God. Bro. I believe in it. I am full of it. I must see it start. I am believing more and more that Alachua County is the place for it. Enclosed also, please find a letter of commendation from Supt. Turner. Now I am asking a favor. Please show this letter (from Turner) to Supt. Kelley, then return it to me. If he desires a copy please touch him off one. Please tell Mr. Kelley that I want Trenton School. If Kelley can do anything with those people and if you can do anything with Kelley then there is where I want to ask that you "break a lance" for me. Show him Turner's letter, have a talk with him and then tell me how he "looks" about it. I am asking quite extensively of you but I feel that you will kindly do these things. With lots of Christian love to you, Sister and little Colson. I beg to remain, Yours fraternally, J. T. Bushong --------------------- This letter was written by John Tolbert Bushong Sr. while in Plant City, Hillsborough County, Florida Plant City, Fla. 16 June 1910 Mr. B. R. Colson Gainsville, Fla. Dear Bro. If I should go to Gainsville next Monday would you be in position to show me some of the bargains? You have an idea of what we want. Please answer me at so I can get it Saturday. How is the meeting progressing? Please remember me with love to the congregation and to Bro. Hoover as well. Hope you are all real well and enjoying life to its full. Yours fraternally. J. T. Bushong ---------------------- This letter was written by John Tolbert Bushong Sr. while in Plant City, Hillsborough County, Florida South Florida Seminary J. Tolbert Bushong, Principal Plant City, Florida 12 August 1912 Mr. B. R. Colson Gainesville, Florida Dear Bro., I understand that steps are being taken to launch a Bible School at Gainsville. Please let me know at once if I am correctly informed. I am trying to start a work here. Of course the effort is very feeble and prospects gloomy. If such a move is ......at your place I shall give up my feeble efforts. Please inform at once. Yours in Christ, J. Tolbert Bushong Hope all are well and happy. ------------------------ Copied and Submitted by Gloria Bushong

If you are expecting to start Bible school in Florida, I shall be pleased to know your plans etc. If you care to know, I shall be glad to put my plans before you. 2. Boschong Subscribers, We did further research on the Schillers. We discovered that the name was misspelled in various records and became a permanent misspelling as Sheeler. We are pretty secure in our research. It is interesting how family histories are spun and evolve. O. Winfield, was born in 1813 in this county. His parents, Leonard and Eve Bair, natives of Pennsylvania, were very early settlers of this county, coming here in 1810. The county was then very new, Indians, and wild animals abounding, but they took up a lease on a tract of 320 acres of land, which they cleared and developed into a home. The father died in 1826, the mother in 1839. Of their family of eleven children, only two are living - our subject and Esther, widow of Abraham Knaga, of Whitley County, Ind. Our subject was raised on a farm, and obtained his education in the limited schools of those early days. In 1836, he was united in marriage with Sallie Welty, a native of this township. Mr. Bair lived on rented property for several years after his marriage, and then bought a farm, and by hard work and careful management has gradually increased it until the home place now comprises 176½ acres of well-improved land. They have one child - Esther Ann, who was married to Harmon Sheeler (deceased), by whom she had three children - Edward, George and Daniel. Mr. Sheeler died in 1870, and Esther is living with her father. Mr. Bair died June 27, 1880. She was a member of the Lutheran Church, and was a faithful wife and kind mother.
