Boschong Subscribers, I might and I mean might....., have solved the mystery of the husband of Mrs. Jacob Bushong from the 1886 obit in Wood County, Ohio. We are wondering if Charles J. Bushong who died in 1892 might have been the fellow married to Mrs. Jacob Bushong who died in 1886. Was his full name Charles Jacob Bushong named after his grandfather Jacob Bushong of Hancock County, Ohio? He is the right age to have had a wife of age 22 in 1886 and he did live in Wood County, Ohio. Charles J. Bushong traveled and possibly met her, married her, brought her back to Wood County where she died in 1886. The children mentioned in Mrs. Jacob Bushong's obit might have died before 1892 as they are not mentioned in the obit for Charles J. Bushong and do not show up in the household of the widow Josephine (Pickett) Bushong. I believe that both Mrs. Jacob Bushong and Charles J. Bushong both died of consumption. Mrs. Jacob Bushong was born around 1864 and Charles J. Bushong was born around 1863. Now what were the names of his children? Back in August 2009, we posted about Josephine (Pickett) Lane who married Charles J. Bushong of Wood County, Ohio so check the BOSCHONG Archives. Meanwhile we found another obit mentioning a Mrs. Jacob Bushong in 1885 so we are awaiting word on that Mrs. Jacob Bushong from the Wood County District Library. Meanwhile here is the obit for Charles J. Bushong and a little more information. ------------------------ CHARLES J. BUSHONG At his home on west Broadway on Tuesday evening, 12 January, Charles J. Bushong, aged 29 years. Funeral at the M. E. Church at 10 o'clock am today, conducted by Revs. Thomas and Long. Burial at City Cemetery. No young man in or about North Baltimore was better known than was Charley J. Bushong. He was born just across the Hancock County line, and has mingled with our people during most of the years of his life. For the past eight years he has lived in North Baltimore and being in some sort of business all the time had been a widely known person for one of his age. Charley has had for the past six years a dread of consumption, the disease which had taken from him his mother while he was yet a child and also a sister Mrs. F. Wagner since then. He traveled some in hopes of finding an antidote for the disease, but what little he gained by travel was counteracted by almost a reckless exposure after he returned. About two months ago he was for the first time confined to his room. It was never again his fortune to leave it alive. He was pronounced incurable by attending physicians and though every possible effort, in way of care and sympathy was shown him, he was, before his real death, surrendered to the Inevitable. We will often think of this departed friend of ours. He was everybody's friend, always kind and agreeable. But Nature's way of transforming one generation after another takes no cognizance of our kindred or social relationships. What to us is great sorrow is to Nature but a matter of course, immutable, unmerciful, eternal. About a year ago he was married to Mrs. Josie B. Lane from Iowa. To his widow and numerous relatives we extend our most fervent sympathy and condolence. ----------------------------- Researched and Submitted by Gloria Bushong

MADISON BUSHONG, FARMER, DRINKS CARBOLIC ACID IN TOOL HOUSE OF PLEASANT HILL BURIAL GROUND. PROPPED DOOR OPEN CAREFULLY. McComb, 12 August (special) ---Having reached the age of 79 years, unable to work and feeling himself of no more use in life, Madison Bushong, farmer, residing five miles east of McComb, entered the tool house of the Pleasant Hill Cemetery Monday afternoon, carefully propped open the door so his body could be seen and drank a bottle of carbolic acid, dying in agony in a few minutes. Despondency was given as the cause of the deed. The act was planned with deliberation by Mr. Bushong who was careful to see that his body would be found after death. He was discovered by Edward Kempher, Sexton of the cemetery, who noticed the tool house dorr open and went to close it. He found mr. Bushong lying unconscious, and still breathing. As soon as he realized his condition, Mr. Kempher notified Coroner Calvin S. Todd of McComb, who arrived just as Mr. Bushong breathed his last. Mr. Bushong had no real home, but resided for the most part, with a sister, Mrs. William Spitler, a short distance north of the cemetery. He had been able to work only at odd jobs for a number of years, owing to his age, and it is believed that his dependent condition prayed on his mind until he sought relief in death. He is also survived by a daughter, Mrs. Fannie M. Kimmel, of New Mexico, a brother, Wesley Bushong of Mobile, Alabama, and four sisters, Mrs. Alvina Trout and Mrs. Saline Murns of Van Buren, Mrs. Israel Spitler, residing near Pleasant Hill, and Mrs. William Spitler. ------------------------------- Researched and Submitted by Gloria Bushong

Bushong, as you can see from the above census served in the War With Spain called the Spanish- American War. The war was fought over Cuba, our neighbor 90 miles to the south of Key West, Florida. James T. Bushong served in Company H, 2nd OVI and in Company G, 6th Infantry, Bloomdale, Wood County, Ohio and was a Private. Serving in his unit also was Abram Cline from the 1900 census. A LITTLE BIT OF HISTORY Spain considered Cuba a province of Spain rather then a colony and there were many cruel atrocities on Cuban citizens reported to President William McKinley who was President. He tried diplomatically to resolve the problem between the citizens of Cuba and Spain to no avail. They wanted Spain out of their lives and there were many conflicts. Cuba was supposed to have independence from Spain on 1 January 1898 but 11 days after that date, riots broke out between soldiers from Spain and Cuban citizens. McKinley sent the MAINE in to look after American interests and citizens. On 15th of February there was an explosion that sank the MAINE. After an investigation with both sides declaring the other to blame, Spain declared war on the United States. It was short lived and the United States won. That is why for years we were friends with Cuba until Castro, a communist, came to power. I was born and raised in Miami, and I am still mad at John F. Kennedy for not helping the Cubans trying to free Cuba in the Bay of Pigs Invasion, which by the way, was planned for months in the home of a Cuban doctor who lived behind my parents. The great island of Cuba of the past is certainly nothing like the slum of today with no free enterprise but Miami has benefited greatly from the refugees who fled. ------------------------------ Researched and Submitted by Gloria Bushong
