Boschong Subscribers, We found this biography of Philip Null written by Charles Ray Harper and wanted to share it with you. There are a few errors in it as far as taking liberties of the last name Bushong. It was never Beauchamp as claimed here. Anna Margreth's baptismal record in York, Pennsylvania is spelled Bouchon and she was baptized 13 April 1755 with parents Jacob and Julianna Bouchon and sponsors Michel Weiter and Elisabeth Weigel. -------------------------- CAPTAIN PHILIP NULL (1752 - 1834) By Charles Ray Harper Probably the foremost revolutionary war patriot that ever settled in the Kanawha Valley. Capt. Null went off to war early, and carried his musket for seven years in the war from New England to South Carolina. Capt. Null as a pvt. then enlisted in Capt. George Hudson's Heidelberg Company, Lancaster Battalion of Pennsylvania. In 1776 he was most likely in battles of Halem Heights, White Plains NY and at Fort Lee across water from Harlem and Manhattan Isl and NY. He was also likely at Brooklyn Heights Long Island NY from Aug 27, 1776-Nov 18, 1776. On Dec. 25, 1776, Christmas Day, he was one of 2400 men picked to cross the Delaware, with Gen. George Washington. He was with Gen. Washington when they won a battle at Trenton NJ the next day, Dec. 26, 1776. After an appeal by Gen. Washington, Ca pt. Phillip Null was one of 200 men who volunteered to go with the general to battle of Princeton NJ on Jan 3, 1777. In 1777 he was a private in Capt. Geroge Null's 4th Co. First Lancaster Battalion of Penn, just before that he was in Capt. Moore's Co. 2nd Battalion Lancaster Co. of Penn. Capt. Phillip Null a non-comissioned officer, when with Gen. Washington at Valley Forge during the bad winter of 1777 and 1778. Philip Null was at Brandywine Creek Sept. 11, 1777, meet Major Gen. the Marquis de Layfayette, was wounded (the general) at battle of Germantown Oct. 5, 1777. Later Gen. Washington sent Phillip Null down to North Carolina to help put down Tory uprisings, was captured by Torries who slit his throat, and left him for dead. He was found by his future wife's family, who took him home where his future wife , Margaret Beauchamp (1755-1826), sewed him up, and saved his life. Phillip Null was leading a company of militia at Battle of Camden SC Aug. 16, 1780 where the British troops routed Gen. Gates. The Swamp Fox, and Col. Andrew Pickens skimishes with the British. They where the only forces left to fight in South Carolina. Capt. Null was with Col. Andrew Pickens at Battle of Cowpens under the wagoneer Gen. Daniel Morgan (Pickens promoted to General because of job done by Cap Null and the rest of their men). There is a very good chance Capt. Null was at Battles of Ki ng's Mt. Oct 7, 1780 and Ramsour's Mills June 20, 1780, near his home in Lincolnton NC. He also served under the gamecock Gen. Thoma Sumpter, and was under the Swamp Fox (Frances Marion) in Battle of Eutaw Springs Sept. 8, 1781 and other battles. The Great morgan victory at Cowpens and battle of Eutaw Springs, pushed the British up to their end at Yorktown, VA. Capt. Phillip Null was with Gen. George Washington at the surrender at Yorktown Va. Oct. 19, 1781. Capt. Phillip Null also knew and served with the Quaker General Nathaniel Greene. The Torries forced his wife out of their house in Lincolnton, Lincoln Co. NC. She had to beg for food for her children. Margaret Beauchamp toughed it out. {NOTE: We know now that her maiden name was Bushong and not Beauchamp} Capt. Null had a tavern and a goal (jail) at this home in Lincolnton, Lincoln Co, NC Capt. Null was born in 1752, near Wrightsville, York Co. PA. Died 1834 of Cholera at Pt. Pleasant VA (WV) on his way to see his son Henry in PA. Married Margaret Beauchamp (born Apr. 13, 1755 York Co, PA, died in 1826 on Poca River, Kanawha Co, W V (now Putnam Co, WV). Married 1779 Lincolnton, Lincolnton Co, NC, now Rutherford Co, NC. Daughter of Jacob (Pierre) Beauchamp Bushong 1735-1812 and Juliana Wingle. Capt. Null son of John Null who died in York Co. PA (Will- Oct. 27, 1765) Both Bushong and Null families came from Alsace-Lorraine France. Capt. Null built 3 houses - 1st was where Joseph Academy now stands, 2 story built between 1770-1774 2nd house & 1st house built at Lincolnton, Lincon Co NC. 2 story house had a tavern, and a goal (jail) house got layed off in 1791 in records, an d 3rd house on Poca River, now Putnam Co. He had officers warrants in NC and SC 200 acres in Wadel's line NC, 500 acres near Clemson, old Pendleton Co SC, 1795 back to 1779. Also had other land grants 350 acre s on Catawba River NC, 250 acres high shoals NC He traded these officers script for 1600 acres on Poca River Kanawha Co VVV (now Putnam Co WV) Captain Phillip Null discovered coal on Poca River (at mouth of in 1790) from Hardesty Hist- of Putnam Co 1886. He was helped by his friend Gen George Washington getting the land. Boschong Subscribers, Many of you may not be aware that there are many diaries floating around Shenandoah County written by people who lived in the Valley that tells us a lot about every day life, the births, deaths and marriages of the people they knew. Some are in private collections, some are in libraries and some are just owned by family members. I recently transcribed Mattie Bushong Good's diaries which had been stored in the attic of Anderson Bushong's home for years. Mattie died in 1955. Levi Pittman kept such a diary. He was born in 1807 and died in 1892 in Shenandoah County. He was well known in the Valley and was married to Rachel Windle, d/o of Augustine. Although we still do not know where Andrew Bushong is buried, we do know, thanks to Levi Pittman, that Andrew Bushong was buried 24 January 1853 as Levi states that in his diary. He did not mention however where he is buried and none of the books written on the tombstone inscriptions of the cemeteries or on the website for Shenandoah County has a mention of him being in any of the cemeteries. Good Evening Boschong Subscribers, I have looked at all of the Calvert genealogies submitted on the web and could not fit Mary Calvert Wright or Elizabeth Calvert into any of them. There is no mention of them in any of the genealogies. So I have been working on the one Calvert who I could find but not mentioned in any of those genealogies. This Hanse Calvert could be related to Elizabeth Calvert who married Andrew Bushong. Hanse Calvert lived in Staunton, Augusta County, Virginia very early around 1752. Maybe he came down from Chester County, Pennsylvania where there were some very early Calverts living. Anyone want to help to fill in the missing 1820, 1830, 1840, 1850 and 1870 census records? -------------------- 1810 Federal Census: Virginia Augusta County HANSE CALVERT 1 male under 10 years of age 1 male 45 and up 1 female 10 to 15 years of age 2 females 16 to 25 years of age 1 female 45 and up 1 slave NOTE: His neighbors are Cooper and Detrick. Boschong Subscribers, I received the following press release about the name change for the New Market Battlefield. ------------------------------ Virginia Museum of the Civil War New Market Battlefield * Historic Bushong Farm * Shenandoah Valley Tourist Information Center P.O. Box 1864 New Market, VA 22844 866-515-1864 (toll free) 540-740-3101 (local) 540-740-3033 (fax) _www.vmi.edu/newmarket_ (http://www.vmi.edu/newmarket) Administered by the Virginia Military Institute FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE 9 June 2011 New Market Battlefield State Historical Park Adopts New Name CONTACT: Scott H. Harris, Director, [email protected]_ (mailto:[email protected]) 866-515-1864 NEW MARKET, VIRGINIA—What’s in a name? For the New Market Battlefield State Historical Park, that question has been answered with a new identity that reflects the site’s multi-faceted mission: The Virginia Museum of the Civil War. In announcing the new name, the Virginia Military Institute acknowledges a three-part interpretive mission for its New Market facility: 1. The experience of the Commonwealth of Virginia in the American Civil War 2. The Battle of New Market, with particular emphasis on the role played by the VMI Cadets 3. The social and military history of the Shenandoah Valley during the Civil War era. The site where the cadets helped win a Confederate victory on May 15, 1864 was designated the New Market Battlefield Memorial in 1967, with the Bushong farmhouse as a visitor center. The Hall of Valor Museum opened in 1970, incorporating both information on the Battle of New Market and exhibits covering the Civil War in the Commonwealth that were relocated from the Virginia Civil War Centennial Center in Richmond following the end of that commemoration. During the 1970s, reconstruction of the Bushong Farm outbuildings allowed a more complete story of the family’s life in the era to be told. By the 1980s, the site had become the New Market Battlefield State Historical Park, reflecting a closer association with its state ownership through VMI. “While the name is new, the fundamental mission really hasn’t changed,” notes the museum’s director, Scott Harris. “Inclusion of the Centennial exhibits expands our context beyond the Battle of New Market to address the broader story of the war throughout Virginia. This, coupled with the chance to focus on the civilian experience at the Bushong Farm, allows us to present special exhibits, programs, publications, and other activities that reflect that larger mission. As Virginia and the rest of the nation observe the 150th anniversary of the Civil War, we felt the time was right to adopt a name that better reflects our diverse interpretive focus.” Harris notes that the elements of the museum most familiar to local residents, VMI alumni, and past visitors remain—the museum building, which includes both exhibits and the theater showing the Emmy award-winning Battle of New Market film Field of Lost Shoes daily every hour; the Bushong Farm, featuring two original houses and eight reconstructed outbuildings; and the battlefield walking trails, extending two miles through the core area of fighting on May 15, 1864. Earlier this year, the museum took on another role as home of the Shenandoah Valley Tourist Information Center, taking over from the Shenandoah Valley Travel Association. Website, signage, and marketing materials for the Virginia Museum of the Civil War will take several months to implement fully, and a period of transition is expected to both explain and expand awareness of the new identity. ----------------------------- Submitted by Gloria Bushong
Boschong Subscribers, We found this adoption record for Louis Hill, adopted by John L. Bushong in 1894 when he was four years old. His Hill parents were dead and other family members could not take care of him. One older sister is named but we could find nothing on her. After Louis turned 18 years of age, he resumed his real last name. John L. Bushong was married to Carrie Sexton in Menard County, Illinois. He was the son of Jefferson Bushong and Rachel Johnson. I have been waiting for an obit to come from Illinois but so far it hasn't appeared in my mail box, so I am going to go ahead and post this. If and when it comes, I will post his obit. --------- Menard County Illinois Probate Court Volume 11 - 1894 - 1897 Page 50 7th May Term 1894 In the Matter of the Petition of John L. Bushong for an Order declaring Louis Hill to be his adopted child. And now on this the above cause coming on to be heard upon the petition and proofs adduced in support of the facts therein stated and it appearing to the Court from the petition and evidence herein said petitioner is a resident of said county and desires to adopt said child; that said child is a male and of the age of Four years on the 28th day of May 1894. And further that said petitioner desires the name of said child changed to that of Louie Bushong. That the father and mother of said child are dead but the sister is living and consents to the adoption of said child by said petitioner and further that Maggie M. Bost the Eldest sister of said Louie Hill is the head of the family and that she is unable to provide for her said brother and that he has no other relatives who are willing or able to take and provide for him. And that the petitioner is of sufficient ability to bring up the child and furnish suitable nuture and education and that it is fit and proper that such adoption should be made. And that it would therefore be to the interest of said child to be the adopted child of said petitioner. And it further appearing that the sister of said child has had due notice of the time when and the place where, said petitioner would make the application for an order in this cause, it is therefore ordered and adjudged by the Court that the said Louis Hill be the adopted child of said petitioner and capable of inheriting his estate: That the name of said child be changed to that of Louie Bushong and that said petitioner pay the costs of the proceeding. Lena agrees with me about this so please everyone change their records. ----------------------- "This is to Certify that I am willing that my Daughter Elizabeth Calvert is to enter into the State of Matrimony with Andrew Bushong. Given under my Hand this Nineteenth Day of August 1796. Mary Wright, Her Mark" "To the Clerk of Shenandoah County Teste: Abraham Wright, His Mark" "The Within Certificate was proved by the Oath of Abraham Wright." "KNOW all men by these Presents, That We Andrew Bushong and Abraham Wright are held and firmly bound unto his Excellency Robert Brooke Esq., Governor of Virginia, in the just and full sum of one hundred and fifty dollars, to which payment well and truly to be made, to the said Governor, or his successors, we bind ourselves, our heirs, executors, and administrators, jointly and severally, firmly by these Presents, Seal with our Seal, and dated this 20th day {August} of 1796. The condition of the above obligation is such, that, whereas there is a marriage suddenly intended to be solemnized between the above bound Andrew Boushong and Elizabeth Calvert now if there be no lawful cause to obstruct the said Marriage, then the above obligation to be void and of no effect, otherwise to remain in full force and virtue. Boschong Subscribers, We are making great progress on some of the early Bushong families! Pieces of the puzzle. How does it all come together? ---------------- Lewis Bushong (Senior) married 28 October 1846, Logan County, Ohio to Phebe Haines, daughter of Joseph Haines from, we are thinking Augusta County, Virginia who, Joseph, we believe, to be one of the sons of Philip Haines and Eve Bushong, Philip Haines being mentioned in 1812 Will of Jacob Bushong from Augusta County, VA. ------------------ 1850 Federal Census: Cannot find them in census records ------------------- 1860 Federal Census: Ohio Bokes Creek Township, PO Hale, Logan County Enumerated 4 July 1860 Page 207B Lines 25-33, HH 1257/1250 Lewis Bushong 41/Male/Farmer/$200-$400/OH Phebe Bushong 33/Female/OH {Phebe Haines, d/o Joseph Haines} Henry Bushong 13/Male/AttendedSchool/OH Joseph Bushong 11/Male/AttendedSchool/OH William Bushong 9/Male/AttendedSchool/OH Mary Bushong 7/Female/OH Lewis Bushong 6/Male/OH Rachel Bushong 3/Female/OH Essum Bushong 6mos/Male/OH ----------------- When the Civil War broke out Lewis Sr. enlisted and was killed 5 April 1863 in Lexington, Fayette County, Kentucky. Boschong Subscribers, While going back over old posts, I was reminded of Eve Bushong who married Philip Haines. Eve Bushong was the daughter of Jacob Bushong and Juliana Weigel. We posted about Philip and Eve back in October 2006 and February 2010. I decided to revisit the 1850 census for Augusta County, Virginia and we think we might have made a breakthrough on one more of their children, daughter Elizabeth Haines and I believe I found Eve (Bushong) Haines too! To refresh your memory about Eve Bushong and husband Philip Haines: EVE BUSHONG Born: About 1765, Virginia, d/o Jacob Bushong & Juliana Weigel. Boschong Subscribers, Well this was sure a surprise. See BOSCHONG Archives for January 2005. CHRONICLES OF THE SCOTCH-IRISH SETTLEMENT IN VIRGINIA By Lyman Chalkley SEPTEMBER AND NOVEMBER, 1791. John Bosong vs. William Wallace.--Writ, 1st February, 1791. Case. John died August-September, 1791. ------------------- MARCH, 1794. Here's more evidence of Calvert name being within proximity of Bushongs. This is all from Chronicles of the Scotch-Irish Settlement in Virginia. --------------------- File No. 926.--Calvert vs. Kennerley. Ross (Rolls?) Calvert and Charles Harper complain that on 19th September, 1794, George Calvert purchased of James Kennerley, since deceased, a tract in Culpeper County--325 acres. George assigned the title bond to orators on 29th March, 1806. Kennerley died testate. Will recorded in Staunton District Court, but died intestate as to this land. James Kennerley's son, Benjamin, has died intestate and without issue. James left other issue, viz: Sons James, Thomas, Samuel; Mary Lockhart, then wife of Patrick Lockhart, but now sole; Elizabeth Poindexter, wife of Joseph Poindexter; William and Reuben; Kitty Craig, 534 wife of George Craig. William and Reuben and James have made a deed to orators, but were without title. The heirs reside partly in Virginia and partly in other parts. Thomas resides in Kentucky. Spa. dated 23d August, 1810. ------------------------ Researched and Submitted by Gloria Bushong
Found more on the lawsuit. OCTOBER, 1769 (B). Nicholas Null vs. John Craig.--Chancery. Bill filed, 1767. Revived, 1768, November. Nicholas Null, orator. Revived by George Null, eldest son and heir. Nicholas Null, late of Pennsylvania, but now of this Colony, came to Virginia, 1750. Applied to William Burk for a piece of land which Burk had bought of James Wood of Frederick. John Craig had a claim on the land. Null was a German. Valentine Pence was brother-in-law of Nicholas Null. ---------------------------- If Nicholas Null came to Virginia in 1750, are we sure that his daughter-in-law Margaret who married his son Philip Null was the daughter of Jacob Bushong and Juliana Weigel? I'm thinking more and more that Margaret was the daughter of that mysterious Bushong of Augusta County with the daughter Elizabeth who because a ward of John McClananhan and that possibly Margaret was an older sister. While reading the CHRONICLES I discovered an entry referring to Goose Creek near the Roanoke so guess there was more then one. Gloria

Two corrections on this post. The first is that all of the mention of Nicholas Null was in Volume 1 not 3 and I couldn't find a Will on Nicholas Null mentioned in the Order Book, so I think he might have died intestate. He died sometime in 1767 while in the midst of a chancery suit against John Craig.
