He grew to young manhood here, a cheery, bright boy and after finishing his course in the local schools, he was sent to Oberlin college where he took a five year's classical course, finishing the work with honor and credit. He developed into an athlete of more than local fame during his stay in Oberlin, and won high distinction as a sprinter. His observance of the rules governing amateur sportsmanship was always the strictest and he had the entire confidence of his college associates and his friends here. After returning from college he read law for a year in the office of his father, Hon. M. M. Boothman, but deciding that he would not like that profession, he entered mercantile life and was employed for some time by the firm of D. A. Wolff & Sons, where he gave the best of satisfaction. He left here in February 1900, for Carthage, Mo., where he engaged in the business of travelling salesman, and from the day he left was never seen here again, until his remains arrived from Kansas last Friday. The funeral was held Saturday forenoon at ten o'clock, the local lodge Knights of Pythias having charge of the ceremonies, and the Rev. S. Cobiet being the officiating minister.Ernest Boothman was among the brightest young men this town has produced. Of uniform and unvarying good nature, quick of apprehension and ready to take or give a joke, generally popular, his untimely death is particularly sad, and in their time of sorrow the family have the profoundest sympathy of this community." ------------------------ 1910 Federal Census: Could not find -------------------------- 1920 Federal Census: Ohio Toledo, Lucas County John J. Mr. Deemer went west a long time ago but will be remembered by many people over the county. He served as county treasurer four years and was well known. He leaves his widow, formerly Blanch Brown, two children, a son, Paul, now in France, and a daughter, Ruth, also a brother Edward and many other relatives and friends. He was a member of the Presbyterian church and the Odd Fellows and a good citizen, a kind and affectionate man in his family and among those with whom he was associated. ----------- MARY BELLE BUSHONG DEEMER Born: September 1871, Columbiana County, Ohio Died: 11 December 1871, Columbiana County, Ohio Aged 3 months 28 days Burial: Columbiana Cemetery, Columbiana County, Ohio ---------------- DANIEL DEEMER. Mr. Deemer, who is treasurer of Williams county, is a man whose ability, integrity, and public spirit have won for him the confidence of his fellow-citizens in an unusual degree. Although his county is normally Democratic by about three hundred votes, he was chosen to his present responsible office in 1896 by a majority of six hundred, showing his popularity among all classes and parties. Mr. Deemer comes of honorable ancestry, his great-grandfather, John Deemer, a native of France, having volunteered as a soldier in the American Revolutionary army under General Lafayette, with whom he came to this country. After doing gallant service in the struggle for American independence, he settled in Pennsylvania at the close of the war. Philip Deemer, our subject's grandfather, was born in Mercer county, Pennsylvania, and at an early day located in Columbiana county, Ohio, his remaining years being spent in farming about four miles northeast of New Lisbon. His wife, Rosanna (Stacher), who also died near New Lisbon, was of German descent, but her ancestors had been residents of Pennsylvania for many years. John Deemer, the father of our subject, was born November 12, 1827, at the old homestead near New Lisbon, and on arriving at manhood he engaged in business in the town of Columbiana as a brick manufacturer and broom maker. Later he carried on a hardware business there, and for many years he was a leading citizen of the place. On January 1, 1852, he was married in Williams county, nine miles northeast of Bryan, to Miss Martha Bushong, who died in Columbiana March 12, 1871. He afterward married a second wife, and his death occurred at Columbiana May 28, 1875. In religious faith he was a Methodist, as was also his first wife, both being devout members of the Church at Columbiana. He had three children, who lived to mature age, all by his first marriage: William M., a resident of Jefferson township, Williams county, is a farmer, and is also interested in business as a tinner. Jacob Edward, who resides at Pueblo, Colorado, is the manager for a large grocery company. The subject of our sketch, who is the youngest member of the family, was born in Columbiana, June 29, 1862, and his education was begun in the schools of that town. At the age of fourteen years he came to Williams county, where he worked for some time at farming, saving his earnings in order to secure better school privileges. By this means he managed to pay his way at the normal school at Fayette, Ohio, for two years, and later for three years he attended the Northwestern Normal and Collegiate Institute, at Wauseon, Ohio, the necessary funds being obtained by teaching. After completing his course in the latter institution he continued his teaching for a time, making eleven terms in all, and during the last two years he spent his spare time in reading law. In 1889 he was appointed clerk in the United States Census Office at Washington, D. C.,-where he remained until May, 1893, and the following summer he spent in Elizabethton, East Tennessee. On the day previous to election he returned to Williams county, and settled upon a farm in Jefferson township, of which he became the owner in 1889. The care of this estate has occupied his attention largely, but he finds time to participate actively in all local movements of importance and especially in political affairs. From his youth he has been an ardent supporter of Republican principles, and his sound judgment has caused his advice to be sought in the councils of the party. For seven years he served as a member of the county executive and central committees, and on August 31, 1895, he was nominated by the county convention against four other prominent and popular candidates, to the office of county treasurer, with the result stated above, and since November 5, 1895, he has filled the position with characteristic skill and fidelity. On June 25, 1891, Mr. Deemer was married to Miss Blanche Brown, a native of Bridgewater township, Williams county, and a daughter of Abner K. and Amanda (Bollinger) Brown, prominent residents of that locality. Mr. Bushong was born in Columbiana County, Ohio, Sept. 24, 1828, while his father, Jacob Bushong, was born in Shenandoah County, Va., and his grandfather, Andrew Bushong, was also, it is thought, born in the Old Dominion, and was of French ancestry; he followed the occupation of a farmer, and spent his entire life in that State. The father of our subject was reared on the farm in Virginia, and removed thence to Columbiana County, Ohio, where he was among the early settlers of Fairfield Township. He made the toilsome overland journey, bringing his wife with their two children and their worldly effects, their conveyance consisting of a pair of horses and one wagon, which constituted their sleeping apartments at night, while they cooked their food as their horses grazed by the wayside. Upon his arrival Jacob Bushong purchased a tract of timber land, and erecting a pioneer log cabin, he commenced at once to clear and improve a farm. He resided in this place thus employed until 1849, during which time our subject was born in the old log cabin; he then sold out, and accompanied by his wife and six children, started for Williams County. He again found himself a pioneer, and buying a tract of timber land in Jefferson Township, he repeated his experience of pioneer life. On this far, however, twenty acres of land were partially cleared and the regulation log cabin was already built. He found ample room for improvement, however, and lived to see the desire of his heart accomplished, namely, a good farm with suitable buildings and appliances to leave to his children, whom he had fitted not only by giving them such education as the facilities of the day afforded, but by imparting to them those practical lessons which can be learned only in the school of experience. In 1876 he was called to "that land from whose bourne no traveler returns." The mother of our subject, who in her girlhood was Hannah Keller, was born in Shenandoah County, Va. of German ancestry, and surviving her husband several years, died at the home of our subject in 1887, at the advanced age of eighty-one years. Andrew Bushong remained at home with his parents, spending his boyhood in the manner common to the sons of pioneers, until seventeen years of age, when he engaged to learn the potter's trade, and after his marriage he started a pottery on his father's farm, which he carried on five years. He then worked at the carpenter's trade for a period of five years, after which he rented land in Williams County, Ohio, which he operated until about 1863. In September of that year he enlisted in Company F, 182d Ohio Infantry, and served until the close of the war. He went with his regiment to Tennessee, and was on duty principally in that State. He was mustered out with his regiment in July 1865, and receiving his honorable discharge returned to this county and located on his present farm in Amboy Township. The land was still in a state of nature, covered with a growth of heavy timber, and he put upon it a log house, and set to work with a will about its improvement and cultivation. His indomitable industry and perseverance, coupled with his good judgment and frugality, have already borne their legitimate fruit, and he is now in possession of a property which compares favorably with the best in this township. Our subject was united in marriage, Jan. 7, 1852, with Miss Mary Hisey, and to them were born the following children: Elizabeth F., Joseph William, Jacob D., George E., John H., Isabelle, Emma Isadore and Dalla May. Mrs. Bushong was born in Columbiana County, Ohio, April 17, 1828, while her father, Joseph Hisey, was born in Shenandoah County, Va., and removing to Columbiana County, Ohio was among its pioneer settlers. In 1837 he removed to Richland County, and purchasing a farm, engaged in its improvement, and resided there until his death in 1846. His wife, whose maiden name was Elizabeth Altaffer, was born in Virginia, and was the daughter of George Altaffer. After the death of her husband Mrs. Hisey removed to Williams County, Ohio, and settled in Jefferson Township, upon a tract of land which he had purchased, and there she resided until her decease. Mr. Bushong is a public-spirited man, and is well informed on the topics of the day, though his devotion to his farm and family, and his unostentatious disposition, prevent him from taking an active part in public affairs. In politics his sympathies are with the Republican party." ------------------------------------------ Researched and Submitted by Gloria Bushong Biographical account for Bushong supplied by Charlotte Benge.

    2. Boschong Subscribers, Back in July 2006 I posted about Jacob Bushong married to Hannah Keller. This would have been my husband Russell's great great grandparents on his grandfather's John H. Bushong's side. Since that post and a lot more research, we have discovered that we need to revise and add to that research. ----------------- First of all, Jacob Bushong was the son of Andrew Bushong and Elizabeth Calvert as proven by their marriage record found in Shenandoah County, Virginia. {See BOSCHONG post for 6 June 2011} Hannah Keller was the daughter of George Keller Jr. and Catharine Christina Wilkins. George Keller Jr. was the son of George Keller Sr and wife Barbara Ann Hottel. Now, we would like to add some more information to their first born child, Margaret A. Bushong. MARGARET A. 1. [BOSCHONG] More on Andrew Bushon/Bushong - OH - A puzzle for sure
    2. Boschong Subscribers, Here's a little more on Andrew Bushon who was born in Columbiana County, Ohio and died in Hancock County. See BOSCHONG Archives for April 2009, March 2011 and May 2011 for further information. Daniel Bushong of a previous obit was married to Elizabeth Hisey but keep in mind that Andrew Bushong was also married to Mary Hisey and they were both related to Mrs. Will Altaffer of the obit below. That's probably why I am not so quick to jump on the bandwagon of this Andrew being the son of Daniel. He may well be but I need solid proof which so far as not been found. ----------------------- 1860 Federal Census: Ohio New Lisbon, Columbiana County Enumerated 18 June 1860 Page Lines 5-9, HH 524/517 A. Floral offerings were sent by numerous friends and organizations, among them the W. C. T. U. and the executive board of the Home and Hospital. The music was exceptionally grand and the remarks by the Rev. Havighorst were especially appropriate. He took for his text the words of Job: "I would not live always." He spoke of Mr. Bushong's life as having been complete and finished as well as exemplary. 2. Boschong Subscribers, Back in July 2006, I posted about Jacob Bushong and wife Hannah Keller. It had been a long time since I had read those posts and in reviewing them and after seeing George W. Bushong's obit, I suddenly realized that the Jacob Bushong that is shown in the early census records of Columbiana County and all the way through to 1840, was this Jacob Bushong. I had forgotten that they did not move to Williams County, Ohio until 1849 and that all of their children were born in Columbiana County. Gloria ----------------------- >From "Album and Biographical History of Hillsdale County" written in 1888, Pages 217-218: "ANDREW BUSHONG. While traveling through Hillsdale County, the biographical writers of this ALBUM met with but few active business men who are natives of the county. The vast majority of those who today are tilling the soil and raising stock, or are engaged in business or commercial enterprises, were born without the borders of this county. In presenting this sketch of the career of one of the leading men of Hillsdale County, and a gentleman who is thoroughly representative of its progressive element, we deem it our duty first to advert briefly to the life story of those from whom he derives his origin.Mr. In 1876 he was called to "that land from whose bourne no traveler returns." The mother of our subject, who in her girlhood was Hannah Keller, was born in Shenandoah County, Va. of German ancestry, and surviving her husband several years, died at the home of our subject in 1887, at the advanced age of eighty-one years.Andrew Bushong remained at home with his parents, spending his boyhood in the manner common to the sons of pioneers, until seventeen years of age, when he engaged to learn the potter's trade, and after his marriage he started a pottery on his father's farm, which he carried on five years. His indomitable industry and perseverance, coupled with his good judgment and frugality, have already borne their legitimate fruit, and he is now in possession of a property whichcompares favorably with the best in this township. In politics his sympathies are with the Republican party." ----------------- Researched, Copied and Submitted by Gloria Bushong

    2. Boschong Subscribers, I have made great progress with Hanse/Hance Calvert. Still have not been able to prove that he was related to the Elizabeth Calvert married to Andrew Bushong but there are some interesting results. I found some marriages and a Deed with the mention of Hance Calvert and what could be some of the marriages of his children. It is possible that Hance Calvert knew the Bosang family living in Staunton. In the 1810 census John Cooper was a neighbor of Hance Calvert's and in 1803, John Cooper had put up the Surety for the marriage of William Bosang and Elizabeth Thompson. 1. [BOSCHONG] Really Interesting connections with Bushong, Calvert, Bailey and Link - VA
    2. Boschong Subscribers, In my effort to find the family of Calverts that Andrew Bushong's wife Elizabeth Calvert is connected to, I am finding some interesting possibilities between the Bushongs and the Calverts. THE CALVERTS John Calvert born 1742 and died 1790 married Sarah Bailey. Hmmmmm. We know the Bailey name from our posts back in January 2005 and May 2007 when Elizabeth Burk after the death of her husband John Bosang, married William Bailey of Culpeper County, Virginia, a notorious gambler. (See post for May 2007 for account) The name Peter Link is familiar in the Bushong family since Catharine Bushong, d/o Jacob and Juliana (Weigel) Bushong married a Peter Link. In the Calvert family a Peter Link married Hannah Calvert in 1801. Hmmmmmm. They lived in Harrison County, Virginia (Now West VA) and might have moved to Missouri. Hannah Calvert born 1783 was the daughter of George Calvert and Lydia Beck Ralls. Hannah (Calvert) Link was the Aunt to John Strother Calvert who was born 30 November 1806, living and buried at New Market. John Strother Calvert was the son of Ralls Calvert and Mary Wade Strothers of Culpeper County and married Catharine Ann Savage 15 December 1790. 1. [BOSCHONG] More Information on Philip Haines and wife Eve Bushong, Augusta County, VA
    2. Boschong Subscribers, We did a bit more research on Philip Haines. He first lived near McGaheyville in what is present day Rockingham County and is found in the tithables for Rockingham County for 1788 thru 1794. On the 1 July 1795, Philip Hains/Haines bought 540 acres in the Churchville area of Augusta County and moved there. He may have been married before he married Eve and had other children we are just not sure at this point since we can't find marriage records. We know these records are somewhere, either in Rockingham County or Augusta County. Philip Haines and wife Eve Bushong and three of the Haines girls Elizabeth, Lydia and Juliana are found as members of the Jennings Branch Church which the parents joined in 1801 and I am guessing that Philip and wife Eve (Bushong) Haines are probably buried in the church cemetery. We already know that daughter Elizabeth is buried there with her husband Paul Sieg Jr. I wish we could find a marriage date on them to clear up exactly which children are Eve's and which could be for a first wife if there was one. So far, we have not found this record. Way back, I posted about a possible Eve Propst married to Jacob Bushong after I had found some Propst lineage information in Pendleton County, VA that pointed to this. It was nothing documented and we never found anything on a marriage of a Jacob Bushong to an Eve Propst. This may remain a mystery for a while longer but since this might have been oral history handed down through various family members, it's possible that they just mixed up who married who and the mystery may be solved. There seemed to be more then one family of Propst, one in Rockingham County and one in Pendleton County, probably in some way related. Now with all that said, we do know that Philip Haines and Eve Bushong, daughter of Jacob Bushong, had a daughter named Mary Ann Haines who married Reuben Propst. This Reuben Propst was in Rockingham County and his wife Mary Ann Haines died before 1841 as he remarries in 1841 at the age of 43, to Sidney Hoover so possibly this is where the confusion came in on the Propst genealogy. -------------------------- CHRONICLES OF THE Scotch-Irish Settlement IN VIRGINIA EXTRACTED FROM THE ORIGINAL COURT RECORDS OF AUGUSTA COUNTY 1745-1800 CIRCUIT COURT RECORDS, SECTION "I." 1. [BOSCHONG] 1811 Will of Jacob Bushong, Augusta County, Virginia
    2. Augusta County Virginia Will Book 11 Page 11 Will of Jacob Bushong Written 14 January 1811 Proved 23 March 1812 In the name of God Amen. I, Jacob Bushong of the County of Augusta in the State of Virginia being in usual health of body and of a sound and disposing mind memory and understanding, considering the certainty of death, and the uncertainty of the time thereof, and being desirous to settle my worldly affairs and thereby be the better prepared to leave this world this world when it shall please God to call me hence, I do therefore make and publish this my last will and Testament, in the manner and form following, That is to Say: FIRST AND PRINCIPALLY, I commit my Soul into the hands of the Almighty God, and my body to the earth to be decently buried at the discretion of my Executors herein after mentioned or named, and after my debts and funeral charges are paid. SECONDLY: It is my will and device that after my decease that my Executors make sale of all my real and personal Estate which I may die possessed of, and make Conveyance or Conveyances thereof to the purchaser or purchasers and to make conveyance or conveyances to any lands I may have sold or to any lands that have been sold by any person acting for me, on the purchaser or purchasers complying with their contract. THIRDLY: So soon as the moneys which may arise from the sale of my Estate real and personal as aforesaid and the debts which may be owing to me at my decease can be collected by my Executors, they are hereby directed to make an equal distribution thereof into Eleven shares, so that every child gets alike. AND LASTLY I do hereby constitute and appoint my son-in-laws Phillip Haines and Peter Nicholas to be my Sole Executors of this my last will and Testament, Revoking and annulling all former wills and Testaments by me heretofore made, Ratifying and confirming this and none other to be my last will and Testament. IN TESTIMONY WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal this fourteenth day of January in the year of our Lord one Thousand Eight hundred and eleven. Jacob Bushong, His signature and seal (In German) Signed Sealed and Delivered in the presents of us: Daniel Fall Jacob Smith (In German) Peter Hill ----------------------------- At a court held for Augusta County Virginia 23rd March 1812. This last will and Testament of Jacob Bushong, deceased was presented in court and proved by the oaths of Daniel Fall and Jacob Smith, two of the witnesses thereto and Ordered to be recorded and on the motion of Philip Haines, one of the Executors named in said Will who made oath and together with James Cochran and Jacob Smith his securities entered into and acknowledged their bond in the penalty of $6000 conditioned as the law directs and Peter Nicholas the other Executor named in said Will appeared in court and refused to take upon himself the burden of the Execution thereof. Certificate is granted the said Philip Haines for obtaining a probate thereof in due form. Teste: Chesley Kinney, County Clerk ------------------------------ Jacob Bushong's Estate was appraised at $4655.11 with total costs for settling estate at $476.54 making final distribution amount of $4178.57 with each of the 11 heirs receiving $379.87. Six of the heir's husbands received their $379.87 on 22 September 1817. There is nothing more said about any of the other five heirs as specified in the Will although Philip Haines did have the $1899.35 cents to distribute. I am wondering if there was a lawsuit from the heirs to compel Philip Haines to distribute those funds to the remaining 5 heirs. Possibly by then some of them had died and that may have been the problem. Amount the legatees were son-in-laws: Jacob Harshberger Peter Link Peter Nicholas Philip Null Philip Miller Philip Haines After examining the receipts and papers we find the said Philip Haines Executor to the Estate of Jacob Bushong one thousand eight hundred and ninety nine dollars and thirty five cents this 22nd day of April 1819. At a court held for Augusta County the 24th May 1819. This account and settlement of the estate of Jacob Bushong deceased being returned to the Court is ordered to be recorded. Teste: Vincent Tapp, Deputy Clerk Witnesses: Daniel Fall Henry Storrell ------------------------ Jacob Bushong states in his Augusta County, Virginia Will that he has 11 children living but he names none of them in that Will. Only 7 baptismal records are found in the church records of York, Pennsylvania. Six son-in-laws are named in his Will or as Legatee in the settlement of his Will and by looking up the marriages of those 6 son-in-laws, we can establish the rest of his children. -------------------------- Church Records in York, Pennsylvania 1.
