    1. [BOSCHONG] Chancery Court Records of Augusta County, Virginia
    2. Boschong Subscribers, I am patiently awaiting the announcement from the Virginia State Archives, the date that they will be through scanning the records for Augusta County and opening them for public viewing, as it contains some early court records for Bushongs that we have never seen. The first one is for 1809, I believe. Gloria ------------------ Here are just a few of the Chancery Suits that we will be able to view in the near future. 1. [BOSCHONG] Horace Graham Bushong, s/o Samuel Bushong and Elizabeth Graham - PA
    2. Boschong Subscribers, We have posted about Samuel Bushong and his family back in February 2009 and April 2007. We also posted photos of Samuel Bushong and wife Elizabeth Graham and some of the family up on our website. Horace Graham Bushong with wife Mary Ann Bean are among those photos. Horace Graham Bushong married twice. He married Mary Ann Bean first and much later married a girl, Ruth Ann Delmotte, who was younger then some of his oldest children. We could not find Ruth A. Delmotte in the 1900 census which we thought a little strange nor could I find a marriage record on them although based on the age of Robert Bushong, they had to have married by 1905. The other strange part is that on the 1920 census, she states that she is single instead of widowed. ------------------- HORACE GRAHAM BUSHONG Born: 27 October 1858, Lancaster County, PA, son of Samuel Bushong and Elizabeth Graham Died: 12 July 1918, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania Burial: Salem Evangelical Reformed Church, Lancaster, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania Married Twice: M/1: 1 November 1885, Lancaster County, PA to Mary Ann Bean MARY ANN BEAN Born: 2 November 1862, Lancaster County, PA, daughter of John Bean and Sarah Gochenour Died: 21 January 1894, Lancaster County, PA Burial: Salem Evangelical Reformed Church, Lancaster, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania M/2: Date unknown RUTH ANN DELMOTTE Born: 1887 Died: 1931 Burial: Salem Evangelical Reformed Church, Lancaster, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania ---------------------- 1860 Federal Census: Pennsylvania Upper Leacock Township, PO Bareville, Lancaster County Enumerated 13 June 1860 Page 878 & 879 Lines 39-40 & 1-4, HH 274/287 Samuel Bushong 39/Male/Carpenter/$1600-294/PA Elizabeth Bushong 32/Female/PA Mary Ann Bushong 7/Female/AttendedSchool/PA Ruphias M. 2. Boschong Subscribers, Today I talked with the Archivist at the Pennsylvania State Archives who told me that there is no way to know which county the couples that we posted about earlier to the List were married in, but he did say that many of these marriage licenses came from Philadelphia, Chester and Bucks counties. 1. [BOSCHONG] More about the Duel with Peter Swartz, Woodstock, Shenandoah Co. VA
    2. Boschong Subscribers, I continue to work on Peter Swartz to find proof that he is the grandfather of Elizabeth Swartz married to Anderson Bushong of the New Market Battlefield family. I have ordered from LDS the Will Book for the time frame that Peter Swartz died as it has his Estate settlement and may help some, I hope. We still do not know the man who participated in the Duel with Peter Swartz although we still suspect it was Henry Pence, basing that on Chancery Suit of 1797 but we know now who the two seconds were: Adam Heiskell and Jacob Deary. Don't know which stood with Peter Swartz but suspect possibly Adam Heiskell. George Black was George Swartz, either a brother or son to Peter Swartz. --------------------- >From Page xii of the book "Shenandoah County and its Court House " by Fred Painter. Copyright 1979 County of Shenandoah, VA.. The following is an account from the early county records of a duel fought in Shenandoah County. "A court was called and held for the examination of Adam Heiskell and Jacob Deary charged with being present, aiding and abetting in the murder of Peter Swartz at the courthouse of Shenandoah County, on the 10th of February, 1800, and of the American Independence of the 24th. Who appearing in discharge of their recognizance. It was demanded of them whether they were guilty of the matter thereof they stood charged. Say they were in no wise thereof guilty. Whereupon sundry witnesses were sworn and examined as well on behalf of the Commonwealth as the said Adam Heiskell and Jacob Deary and being fully heard. It is considered by the court that they were not guilty of the aforesaid and are ordered to be henceforth discharged. The Grant Jury by the information of George Black do present Adam Heiskell for keeping a disorderly house in acting as a Second in duelling in the death of Peter Black within one month last past. Also Jacob Deary as acting as Second in the same within one month of the information of George Black." -------------------------- Copied by Lena F. Fuller and Submitted by Gloria Bushong

I tried to find more information on Sarah's children. This family was extremely effected by the death of William Maxwell and son Emmet and it is certainly reflected in many ways. The message was silent as to particulars, but an associated press dispatch conveys the information that the murderous deed was committed by a negro, for money. The bodies were not found till Sunday, and each of the victims were shot through the head. The murderer was arrested. Mr. Maxwell was a merchant at West Unity for several years, in company with E. S. Davies. He entered the army from that place, as Captain of Company C 3d Ohio Cavalry, serving two years when he resigned, returned home and renewed his former business association. In 1864 he removed to Panora, Guthrie county, Iowa. He was elected Clerk of the Court the same year, and was reelected in 1866. Was elected to represent the county in the Legislature in 1871, but resigned before his time was out to engage in railroad building. In 1875 he was appointed to complete a survey of certain reservations in Nebraska, after the satisfactory completion of which he, with his son Emmett, went to Colfax County, New Mexico to engage in stock raising. Mr. Maxwell was born in Lenawee County, Michigan, in 1835 and was married to Sadie Bushong (sister of Mrs. Boothman) in 1858. He was a man of positive ideas and convictions and was honored and respected by all with whom he came in contact. 2. Boschong Subscribers, We received the following e-mail: "Here is a list of children b.to Eliz."Betsy"Bushong & Wm.Wright 1806-1869, as written in 1940 by their granddau., Annie Laurie Wright (1868-), d/o Andrew M. & Adaline F.Copp. The info was written in answer to an enquiry from a niece. Children: Andrew Milton 1842-1926 , Silas Knox 1844-1926, Geo.Ira 1849-1920, John & Joseph -no dates given; "not twins, both died in infancy". Death date only was given on William; no other info except he may have worked at a mill on Broad Run Creek near Manassas at one time. Supposedly our immigrant Wrights were from England ca.1770; brothers John & William. John m. Anna Mary Darscht/Darst/Durst. no other info on them." ------------------------- Back in January we posted about Elizabeth Bushong and her husband William Wright and their children. At the time we weren't sure that John and Joseph Wright buried in the Bowman-Fisher Cemetery were theirs. Now we know that they are although they are not the pair buried in the Bauserman Cemetery. We also need to correct George Wright's middle name as according to this e-mail is middle name was Ira not Isaac. Now if we could just find a marriage record on Elizabeth Bushong and William Wright. -------------- Children of William Wright and Elizabeth Bushong BOWMAN-FISHER CEMETERY Maurertown, Shenandoah County, Virginia JOHN H. 1. [BOSCHONG] Continuation of Peter Schwartz/Swartz, PA to VA, Clock Maker, Died 1800, VA
    2. PART 2 We still have some gaps to fill in but according to B. K. Swartz, Peter Sr. died 10 February 1800 in one of the only duels recorded in Shenandoah County, Virginia. We are pretty sure it had something to do with the Chancery suit instituted by him in 1797 that we mentioned in the previous post. The Martin Swartz family were Lutheran and Peter Swartz family were Anabaptist so we are not sure how they are related, if at all. We believe Peter Swartz married twice and had children from both marriages. We know Peter, Catharine and Elizabeth are children from his first marriage. Mary, Hannah, and Ann are definitely from the second marriage. We are at some disadvantage since we have not found a tombstone for Peter Swartz and do not know when he was born. We suspect he is may be buried in Massanutten Cemetery. I searched for more information on the children of Peter Schwartz/Swartz mentioned in the Shenandoah County Minute Book and found the following which points to them being his children. We also found an entry for his grandson Lawrence after his father Peter Jr. died but could find no further information on Lawrence Swartz. He might have used his second name thus the disappearance in census records or he could have died before 1850. ----------------------- PETER SWARTZ SR. 1. [BOSCHONG] Peter Schwartz/Swartz, PA to VA, Clock Maker, Died 1800
    2. Happy Independence Day Subscribers! I continue to work on the genealogy of the Battlefield family at New Market. I believe that I am making progress with the parents of Elizabeth Swartz born 1832 who married Anderson Bushong. it is more of a process of evidence obtained and process of elimination. We found the following information that I believe ties into the lineage for Elizabeth Swartz. This may be the lineage as a result of this research: Peter Swartz of Pennsylvania and Virginia David Swartz (Married Caroline) - Shenandoah County living briefly in Rockingham County. Elizabeth A. Swartz married Anderson Bushong ----------------------- PETER SWARTZ SR. Born: Unknown but came to Woodstock, Virginia from probably York or Lancaster County, Pennsylvania Occupation: Clock and Watch Maker Died: 10 February 1800, Shenandoah County, Virginia (Died in a duel) Married: Hannah Pennywit HANNAH PENNYWIT Born: Unknown Died: Unknown ---------------------- TIMELINE Before 1795 - Peter Swartz lived in Pennsylvania (County yet to be determined but possibly York or Lancaster) and was a clock and watch maker. ------------------ In 1795 Peter Swartz did three things. He bought two lots in Woodstock, he made a bargain with Henry Pence to bring down goods to be sold in Shenandoah County, Virginia, giving him money, horses and two clocks and at some point he bought 160 acres at Toms Brook. Spring of 1796 - Peter Swartz left for Shenandoah County where he tried to sell the good. He failed to do so and tried to make good on it to Henry Pence who had meanwhile gone to Rockingham County. Henry refused to take back the goods or settle up with Peter Swartz so Peter Swartz sued to get relief. 11 June 1797 - There is a law suit in Chancery entitled Peter Swartz VS Henry Pence. Other defendant were George Strickler spelled in lawsuit as George Stricklander/Stricklar and several other ways. This lawsuit spilled into Rockingham County with George Stricklander, Henry Pence since that is where George Stricklander and Henry Pence resided. John Pennywit is mentioned. Augustine Reedy acted as agent of Peter Swartz trying to settle the outstanding bond. ---------------------- 13 April 1798 - Peter Schwartz/Swartz married Hannah Pennywit. We believe this to be his second marriage. We are not sure who his first wife was but believe there were older children from that first marriage when he died in 1800 who came with him to Shenandoah County. In 1800 he had 6 children under ages 14 years with George Lind appointed guardian. Shenandoah County Marriages Peter Schwartz to Hannah Pennywit Bond: 13 April 1798 Marriage: 15 April 1798 --------------------------- 1800 - Between 7 January and 7 April, Peter Swartz died as noted in Chancery suit with administrators. ----------------------------- 7 April 1800 - George Lind is appointed guardian to Peter Swartz, Catherine Swartz, Elizabeth Swartz, Mary Swartz, Hannah Swartz and Ann Swartz, orphans of Peter Swartz, dec. under age 14. Hoping older children will show up in Estate settlement. According to Chancery he died Intestate. I believe his Estate settlement is in Shenandoah County Will Book 13, Page 99. ----------------------------- 29 August 1800 - George Lind and Isaac Samuels were appointed Administrators of Estate of Peter Swartz deceased. ------------------------------- January 1801 - Chancery Suit - Administrators of Peter Swartz VS Jacob Sonner Among the witnesses deposed were: John Effinger Augustine Reedy Joseph and George Young Henry Keller Jacob Hoak John Colville ----------------------------- 19 June 1800 - One of his sons, Peter Swartz (Jr.) was bound over to Michael Haas to learn the trade of tanning. Shenandoah County Virginia Minute Book 9 June 1800 - Overseer of Poor District #1 bind Peter Swartz, orphan of Peter, to Michael Haas to learn tanning. NOTE: Haas family married into the Bushong family in Woodstock. ----------------------- Possibly between 1800 - 1805 - No Date as yet: David Swartz was assigned 160 acres in Toms Brook ------------------------ Location: Two and one half miles west of Maurertown, Virginia. Built: circa 1835 Owners: 8 Dec 1800: Philip Reedy sold to John Swartz land which was conveyed to him (Philip Reedy) by Augustine Reedy and Mima, his wife, March 23, 1797. Deed Book M, page 309 Recorded 11 Aug 1817: John Swartz in his last will and testament devised this land to his son, Joseph Swartz. Will Book K, page 278 Recorded 10 May 1875: Joseph Swartz willed his farm and home place to his wife, Sarah Swartz, and at her death it was to go to his son, Joseph Swartz. Will Book 16, page 395 Recorded 28 Sep 1907: Joseph Swartz willed to his son, Luther A. Swartz, all the real estate which he died seized and possessed. Will Book 29, page 128 Recorded 10 Oct 1925: Luther A. Swartz willed to his wife, Annie Elizabeth Swartz, all of his real estate until her death, at which time it was to go to his children, and at the death of his children to the heirs of their bodied (sic). Will Book 34, page 419 Marion Swartz, son of Luther A. Swartz owned the farm in 1937.Physical Description The house on the Swartz farm is an L-shaped two and one half story brick house with metal gabled roof with four inside brick chimneys. There are twenty six windows with nine panes on the upper sash and six panes on the lower, all 8x10 on the first floor, and the second floor windows having six panes in both sashes. The shutters have stationary slats. There is a two story back porch and a small single story front porch with fancy brackets. The entrance has a large six-panel, two-cross door with side lights and transom. The house has eleven large rooms with nine foot ceilings. The stairway is plain with tapered newel, square balusters and a small round rail. Under part of the house is a cellar with a partial board floor. The walls are papered and the floors are of medium width pine boards. There are eight mantels over eight fireplaces that are neatly fluted and rather plain. Sources: Virginia W.P.A. 1. [BOSCHONG] Frederick Bushong and Margaret Keplinger - Pennsylvania
    2. Boschong Subscribers, We now have another Bushong to research. I just found an early Pennsylvania marriage and now I know where the name Frederick in the Bushong family came from! Frederick Bushong married 2 February 1767 to Margaret Keplinger. (Probably York County, Pennsylvania) The information came from a book of extracts from the Pennsylvania Archives and does not give the counties they were married in, just the names of couples and dates. The Keplingers married into many of the Valley names associated with Bushongs including Sprinkle and Zirkle. Gloria

    2. In a message dated 6/28/2011 7:39:07 P.M. Eastern Daylight Time, [email protected] writes: In 1843 Henry Bushong and wife bought a home in Woodstock and then turned around and sold it in 1846. They then purchased farm property of a little over 100 acres at the south end of Woodstock right across the street from the Massanutten Academy where they lived until their deaths. Edward Mark Bushong inherited the farm and lived there until his death in 1922. His Will written in 1913 ordered that after his death, that all of his real and personal property be sold. The property was then sold out of the family. At some point their home was torn down and a BP station now sits on the corner of the property across from Massanutten Military Academy. ------------------------------------- Boschong Subscribers, I need to make a slight correction in the properties that Henry Bushong (married to Mary Ann Wendel) owned. I said that he bought a home in Woodstock in 1843 and sold it in 1846. I have suddenly realized that I meant that the property he bought in 1843 (actually 1842 from Charles Moore), released in 1843 and sold in 1846 was located at the south end of Mount Jackson at the curve in the road on Route 11. I believe he then used that money to purchase in 1847 the piece across from Massanutten Military Academy from the Gaw Estate and it consisted of 152 acres (not a little over 100 acres) and Lot 177 in Woodstock. I found the deeds in Shenandoah County Deed Books. Shenandoah County Deed Book X X, Pages 95 and 141 Gloria Bushong

    1. [BOSCHONG] Edward Mark Bushong's Will and the Calvert Connection, Making progress!
    2. Boschong Subscribers, This morning I went back and reviewed the family of Henry Bushong and Mary Ann Wendel since someone had inquired as to the exact location of Henry Bushong's home in Woodstock. The family actually owned several pieces of property, a farm of little over 100 acres, a house on Main Street and 3 orchards. In 1843 Henry Bushong and wife bought a home in Woodstock and then turned around and sold it in 1846. While looking at Edward Mark Bushong's Will which he wrote in 1913, a name jumped out at me! W. M. CALVERT which certainly has more significane now that we know that Andrew Bushong married Elizabeth Calvert not Carrier. I am convinced that this W. M. Calvert who signed as a Will witness in someway is related to Edward Mark Bushong's grandmother Elizabeth (Calvert) Bushong and is probably a cousin to Edward Mark Bushong. W. M. or William M. Calvert's father William H. Calvert was born in Augusta County, Virginia but by the time he was an adult had moved to Winchester, Virginia and was of all things, a saloon keeper. {Remember the Augusta County Bosangs were ordinary keepers}. His son William M. Calvert lived in Woodstock and witnessed Edward Mark Bushong's Will. --------------- Shenandoah County Virginia Courthouse Woodstock, Virginia I, E. M. Bushong, of Woodstock, VA., being of sound mind and disposing memory, do make, publish, and declare this to be my last will and testament, hereby revoking any and all wills heretofore made by me. THIRD: Having endeavored by the aforesaid provisions to make an absolutely fair distribution of my property, according to the best of my judgment, I hereby direct that in the event of any of my said legatees or devisees seeking by legal proceedings to have set aside the provisions of my will or to recover against my estate for past services, so made as aforesaid, or to interfere in any way with the administration of the estate according to its terms, the said legatees and devisees so proceeding shall have no interest whatsoever in the distribution of same and that the portions so bequeathed them, or willed them, shall be paid by my Executor to the remaining legatees and devisees upon the same terms and subject to the same conditions as in hereinbefore provided so to the interest willed them. FOURTH: I hereby nominate and appoint my son, F. L. & D. B. B. Bushong, Executor of this my last will and testament and direct that he shall qualify and administer my estate without giving security. 2. MELVIN M. BOOTHMAN, merchant, was born in Jefferson Township, Williams Co., Ohio, October 16, 1846, and is one of nine living children, of a family of ten, born to Lemuel M. and Melisendra (Hart) Boothman, who was natives of Trumbull County, Ohio, and of English descent. Lemuel Boothman was reared and educated in his native county. At the age of eighteen months he was left an orphan, and was reared by a Mr. Mitchell. The spring of 1843, he came to Williams county; purchased eighty acres of land in Jefferson Township, it, at that time, being all woods; cleared a place, sufficiently large in which to erect a log cabin, and shortly afterward married, moved upon his place and began clearing and improving it. He lived on this farm until 1873, when he sold out and moved to Bryan, where he has since resided. M. M. Boothman was reared in Williams County, assisting his parents on the farm at clearing and farming. He received a fair common-school education, and January 4, 1864, enlisted four three years, or during the war, as private in Company H, Thirty-eighth Ohio Volunteer Infantry, and was mustered into service at Toledo, a few days after his enlistment. He participated in his first battle the 7th of August, 1864, at the right of Atlanta, known as Utoy Creek, when his company lost eleven men killed and wounded. After that occurred the battle of Jonesboro, September 1, 1853, in which the company went in with thirty-three men and came out with a loss of nineteen. It was here that Mr. Boothman was one of five who lost left limbs. He was shot directly through the left knee, by a musket ball, which resulted in the amputation of that limb the next morning. The wounded went into hospital on the field, and after a few days were removed to Atlanta; remained there until October 29, and thence were removed to Atlanta; remained there until October 29, and thence where removed to Chattanooga, Tenn., Nashville, Jeffersonville, Ind., Camp Dennison, Ohio, and from there received a thirty-day furlough. He received his final discharge June 7, 1865. He began then going to school, afterward engaged in teaching, and in this way acquired a good practical education. He attended the law school at Ann arbor in October, 1869, graduating in September, 1871. He then came home, and the 20th of June of that year married Miss Angeline Bushong. That same fall, he was elected County Treasurer by the Republican party, and re-elected in 1873, serving two terms. He then began the practice of his profession, in partnership with B. E. Sheldon; subsequently (1881), with Thomas Emery. Mr. Boothman has made the practice of law a success, and he and Mr. Emery are doing a good legal business. He is a Republican in politics, and he and wife are members of the Presbyterian Church, and the parents of four children - Howard E., Grace, Dale M. and one as yet unnamed.
