    1. Re: [BOSCHONG] Who is William Bushong born 1779 living in Lancaster County, P...
    2. Rick and List, I also don't know who the William Bushong in the Hauk household could be, but I do know that Andrew Jackson Bushong who married Catharine Homsher was the son of John Bushong and Magdalena Bauserman and that he did have a brother named William Bushong born 12 August 1804, but that William Bushong stayed right in Shenandoah County and married Rachel Clem as all the court documents and Family Bible prove. In the 1850 census in Shenandoah County, you will find brothers William and Jacob living together with their wives, each with a son. His older brother William Bushong bought out Andrew Jackson Bushong (who married Catharine Homsher) share of their father's estate and I have stood on this land in Powell's Fort. it is beautiful country. Shenandoah County Virginia Deed Book SS Pages 240-241 16 November 1840 THIS INDENTURE made this 16 day of November in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and forty, BETWEEN Andrew Bushong one of the heirs of John Bushong decd. of the County of Shenandoah and State of Virginia of the one part. and William Bushong of the same County and State aforesaid of the other part. WITNESSETH: That the said Andrew Bushong for and in consideration of the sum of Eighty dollars current money to him in hand paid by the said William Bushong at or before the sealing and delivery of these presents, the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged hath granted. bargained. sold aliened. released and confirmed. and by these presents doth grant. bargain and sell. release and confirm unto the said William Bushong his heirs and assigns one undivided seventh part of all the land whereof John Bushong died seized and possessed of. lying and being in Powells big fort in said County of Shenandoah containing two hundred and twelve acres the one seventh part is hereby conveyed together with all and singular the rights improvements hereditaments and appurtenances whatsoever thereto belonging and the reversions and remainders rents issues and profits thereof. to have and to hold all and singular the premises with the appurtenances hereby granted unto the said William Bushong his heirs and assigns to the only proper use and behoof of the said William Bushong his heirs and assigns forever. AND the said Andrew Bushong hereby covenants for himself and his heirs that he is seized of good and indefeasible estate of inheritances in the premises and that he hath good right to convey the same to the said William Bushong his heirs and and assigns against the said Andrew Bushong his heirs and assigns against the said Andrew Bushong and all and every other person and persons whatsoever shall warrant and forever defend by these presents. IN WITNESS whereof the said Andrew Bushong hath hereunto set his hand to and seal the day and year first above written. Andrew Bushong, Seal Shenandoah County, to wit: We, Henry Cullers and George McInturff, Justices of the Peace in the County aforesaid in the State of Virginia do hereby certify that Andrew Bushong party to a certain deed, bearing date the 16th day of November 1840 and hereunto annexed, personally appeared before us in our County aforesaid and acknowledged the same to be his act and deed and desired us to certify the said acknowledgment to the clerk of the County Court of Shenandoah in order that he said deed may be recorded. Given under our hands and seals this 16th day of November 1840. Henry Cullers, Seal Geo. McInturff, Seal Shenandoah County SS. The within Conveyance was returned to the Clerks office of said Count on the 11th day of January 1841 and admitted to record. Teste P. Williams, CSC --------------------------- The only error in that September 2005 post was for John's daughter Sarah Bushong, who I thought had married Harrison Peer. Later researched prove that she married a cousin Philip Bushong and went to Henry County, Indiana after she sold her share of the estate she inherited. See posts for September 2005, January 2006, April 2007, June 2007, March 2008, June 2008, February 2009, February 2009, August 2009 and September 2009 for additional information on the family John Bushong including William Bushong who married Rachel Clem, Jacob Bushong who married Elizabeth McInturff and Andrew Jackson Bushong who married Catharine Homsher. ----------------------------- Bible Pages of John Bushong and 2nd wife Catharine nee Ruffner published 1833 the year they were married. At the time of their marriage John was a widower and Catharine was the widow of Peter Clem: FAMILY REGISTER "John Bushong son of John Bushong and Elizabeth his wife was born January 19, 1781" "William Bushong son of John Bushong and Magdalena his wife was born August 12th 1804" "Jacob Bushong son of John Bushong and Magdalena his wife was born June 27th 1806" Mary Bushong dauter of John Bushong and Magdalena his wife was born November 22th 1808" "Andrew Bushong son of John Bushong and Magdalena his wife was born October 11th 1811" Susannah Bushong dauter of John Bushong and Magdalena his wife was born August 25th 1815" Elizabeth Bushong dauter of John Bushong and Magdalena his wife was born Abril 24th 1818" Not reflected in this Bible record is a daughter Lucy Bushong born around 1799. Andrew is born in Shenandoah County, Virginia, Catharine is born in Pennsylvania. It appears Samuel and family came to Indiana, via Columbiana County, Ohio, where they are listed in the 1850 Census. It also shows that they moved to Ohio, after son Albert, was born in 1832 Pennsylvania, and after son Benjamin was born in abt 1836 (Ohio). Daughter, Catharine had married and moved out United States Census, 1850 for Samuel Humshire Name: Samuel Humshire Residence: Fairfield, Columbiana, Ohio Age: 47 years Calculated Birth Year: 1803 Birthplace: Pennsylvania Film Number: 20217 Digital GS Number: 4093878 Image Number: 00164 Line Number: 33 Dwelling House Number: 386 Family Number: 391 Household Gender Age Samuel Humshire M 47y PA Elizabeth Humpshire F 45y PA Albert Humpshire M 16y PA Benjamin F Humpshire M 14y OH Matilda Humpshire F 11y OH Emeline Humpshire F 9y OH Lovinia Humpshire F 7y OH Mary A Humpshire F 5y OH I can find no record of Marriage, except a LDS pedigree states: married 1840 in Fairfield, Columbiana, Ohio and Catharine and Andrew are listed in the 1850 Census in Fairfield, with children United States Census, 1850 for Andrew Bushong Name: Andrew Bushong Residence: Fairfield, Columbiana, Ohio Age: 39 years Calculated Birth Year: 1811 Birthplace: Virginia Film Number: 20217 Digital GS Number: 4093878 Image Number: 00180 Line Number: 32 Dwelling House Number: 500 Family Number: 509 Marital Status: Free or Slave: Household Gender Age Andrew Bushong M 39y VA Catharine Bushong F 26y PA Cassandra Bushong F 8y OH William Bushong M 6y OH Martha Bushong F 5y OH Lydia Bushong F 3y OH Elizabeth Bushong F 1y OH It looks like the Homsher's came through Fairfield, Columbiana, Ohio to Indiana and so did Andrew J Bushong and maybe his family, but from Virginia to Ohio and then to Indiana. In Columbiana County, by the 1850 Census, there was a convergence of two groups of Bushongs, the Pennsylvania and Virginia branches. 1. Re: [BOSCHONG] Cecilia Bushong Hockman Cuffley - Virginia and Maryland
    2. Bill and Herb, I know what the obit says but if he is buried in Toms Brook Cemetery, there is no tombstone for him or first wife Sevilla/Cevilla Wendel/Windle in that cemetery. I am wondering why.......Next time I go to New Market, I am going to see if find the exact spot. Meanwhile, I think I'll put a query out on the Shenandoah List. Second wife Sarah Ann (Mort) Bushong is buried in St. Johns Cemetery now called St. Johns United Church of Christ Cemetery near Edinburg. Her tombstone reads: Sarah A. Bushong 11 July 1838 1 April 1910 If there isn't a tombstone for Isaac and his first wife, if we could find where they are buried, and I suspect that they are buried together, possibly the descendants could start a fund to have a tombstone erected. Scenario Number One: Shortly after her birth and the death of her mother, Cevilla/Sevilla Bushong, Cecelia was placed with her Aunt and Uncle Elizabeth V. Mort and William D. Hockman. Elizabeth was the sister of Sarah Ann Mort who was living in 1860 in Isaac Bushong's household. They were daughters of Abraham Mort and wife Catharine Ann. By age 11 Cecilia was living with Branson Williams and his wife next door to Isaac Bushong and Sarah Ann Mort. Scenario Number Two: While living in the household of Isaac and Cevilla Bushong, Sarah Ann Mort became pregnant by Isaac Bushong thus her sister Elizabeth V. Hockman stepped in a took Cecilia to raise her niece from babyhood thus her name adopted as Hockman. Family stories support the first scenario. 1. [BOSCHONG] Duel between Peter Swartz and Mr. Billings - Woodstock, VA, 20 January 1800
    2. Good Afternoon Boschong Subscribers, I located a newspaper held in the collection at the Alderman Library at Charlottesville, Virginia this morning with an account of the Duel fought by Peter Schwartz/Swartz/Black. This is quite interesting and worth sharing. It is interesting when dates get so screwed up. If you will notice the dates of the account of the duel by the reporter in Staunton to the newspaper in Alexandria as 3 February 1800, the duel had to have happened on the 20 January 1800 and Peter Schwartz/Swartz/Black died 24 hours later which would put his death on the 22 January 1800. I am thinking that this is the grandfather of Elizabeth Swartz, wife of Anderson Bushong of the New Market Battlefield family. ----------------- SOURCE: Alderman Library, University of Virginia, Charlottesville, Virginia 6. Alexandria Times, page [3], vol. V, iss. 888 Publication Date: February 22, 1800 Published as: The Times; and District of Columbia Daily Advertiser Location: Alexandria, Virginia Headline: Staunton, Feb. 3. Communication --------------------- THE ACTUAL ACCOUNT AS TRANSCIBED BY ME DIRECTLY FROM THE ORIGINAL NEWSPAPER WHICH HAD BEEN PHOTO COPIED AND SENT BY E-MAIL. The Alexandria Times Alexandria, Virginia 22 February 1800 Page 3, Column 1 STAUNTON - 3 February COMMUNICATION An unfortunate catastrophe took place at Woodstock, Shenandoah County, on the 20th ult. Two gentlemen (both clock makers) being at the house of Adam Heiskell, happened to fall into a dispute, which mutually instilled, should be determined by a duel; accordingly they applied to Mr. Heiskell for a brace of pistols, who in conjunction with some other gentlemen, then present, agreed to accommodate them, with a view only of seeing them fight a sham battle. The combatants fixed upon their ground, and were accompanied by near twenty people, who were all eager to see what they considered harmless sport. Mr. Heiskell and Mr. Dentry (Or Deery as Minute book states?) were chosen as seconds, they, therefore loaded their pistols with powder, on which they put a paper wadding; the parties took their stand at 15 paces distance from each other, the word was given, and they both fired; the spectators, understanding the secret, raised a great laugh, and the disputants, finding themselves unhurt, agreed to make friends; accordingly they returned to Mr. Heiskell's house and after being there a short time, Mr. Peter Black, the unfortunate deceased, declared himself unsatisfied, as it had not been determined which of the two was the best man. They both agreed, therefore, to go out and take the second trial. The pistols were loaded as before excepting more wadding. The combatants took their stand this time at twenty paces; they threw up for the first fire, and Mr. Black won it; after discharging his pistol, he immediately turned about and run. Mr. Heiskell, thinking there could be no harm done, with powder, called out to Mr. Billings to pursue and make him beg his life; he accordingly run and soon came up with Mr. Black, seized him by the arm, and bringing the pistol in contact with his body, discharged the contents into his side, part of the wadding penetrated into the lungs, the remainder was driven along the outside of the ribs and lodged by the back gone. Mr. Black survived only 24 hours. He has left a wife and six children to lament his untimely end. ---------------------- Researched and Submitted by Gloria Bushong

    1. [BOSCHONG] More on Estate of Jacob Bushong Sr., Died 1811, Augusta County, VA
    2. Good Morning Boschong Subscribers, Here is some further information that was provided to me long ago by Johnita Malone when we were discussing the two Jacob Bushongs living in Rockingham County, VA as Heads of Families in 1784. One thing that Johnita and I discussed about this, was the fact , that it was quite obvious that the two men, Jacob Bushong Sr. and Jacob Bushong Jr. had to be living on the same property since the Jr. had no dwellings. Johnita was totally convinced that her Jacob married to Eve Bossert, was the son of this Jacob Bushong Sr. as shown below. 1784. Heads of Families Rockingham County Page 77, List of Benjamin Harrison Jacob Boshang, Senr. 10 White Souls 1 dwelling 2 other buildings Jacob Boshang, Junr. 3 white souls 0 dwellings or other buildings This is quite obvious that this has to be Jacob Bushong Sr. married to Juliana Weigel and Jacob Bushong Jr. married to Eve Catharine Bossert, father and son. ------------------------- Johnita was able to identify 8 of his children through her extensive research in the Pennsylvania Archives and Church records and she gave me a list of those who she suspected were children. One thing is certain. Although Jacob Sr. stated 11 heirs in his Will, some of his children by the time this Will was written, were deceased, so this couple had more children then have been identified. ---------------------- Augusta County Virginia Will Book 11 Pages 124-126 3 April 1812 Agreeable to an order of Court we the appraisers have made an inventory of the Property of Jacob Bushong deceased this third day of April one thousand eight hundred and twelf and is as follows: VIZ (Inventory follows). 1. [BOSCHONG] Amend, Bushong, Bingham, Lind connections - PA, VA, MO
    2. Boschong Subscribers, I googled the name Amend to see what would pop out. The biography below came up on Wikipedia which I read with much interest as a light bulb went on and suddenly knew that the lineage went back to Elizabeth Bushong, daughter of Jacob Bushong and Juliana Weigel. Jacob Bushong and wife Juliana lived in Manchester Township, York County, Pennsylvania before moving down to Augusta/Rockingham County area of Virginia. Matthias Amend was a soldier in the American Revolution in Virginia. A survey of the boundaries of Rockingham County Virginia yielded the following description: "south branch of Potowmack river, and the same course to be continued to the Alleghany mountain, thence along the said mountain to the line of Hampshire county; and all that part of the said county and parish of Augusta which lies to the northward of the said line shall be added to and made part of the said county and parish of Hampshire. And that the residue of the county and parish of Augusta be divided by a line to begin at the South Mountain (Blue Ridge), and running thence by BENJAMIN YARDLEY'S plantation so as to strike the north river below James Byrd's house, thence up the said river to the mouth of Naked creek, thence leaving the river a direct course so as to cross the said river at the mouth of Cunningham's branch, in the upper end of Silas Hart's land, to the foot of the North Mountain, thence fifty-five degrees west to the Alle- ghany Mountain, and with the same to the line of Hampshire; and all that part which lies north eastward of the said line shall be one distinct parish (county and parish), called and known by the name of Rocking- ham." --------------------------- Now you ask why is this important? Because of the name Benjamin Yardley who acted as executor of the Estate of one Jacob Bushong of Rockingham County who sold in October 1788 the land of Jacob Bushong to Matthais Amon/Amend the tract containing 1108 acres and located in what is now on the edge of the Massanutten range east of Harrisonburg. Unfortunately because the original Deed book was burned in a courthouse fire, this is all the information we were able to obtain from the Rockingham County Court Clerk when we called her this morning. -------------------------- C. L. K. Bowdry Research circa 1929 "Whether Matthias {Amend} owned land or not, he seems to have managed to accumulate considerable money for in October 1788 paid cash for 1180 acres in Rockingham County, Virginia which land he bought from the executor of the estate of his kinsman, Jacob Bushong, who was a brother of Elizabeth Bushong, wife of Matthias Amend." This is just one more proof that Jacob Bushong who went to Stark County is the son of Jacob Bushong and Juliana Weigel. I really don't know how much more evidence you people need before you understand that I am right. ELIZABETH BUSHONG Born: 4 January 1759, York County, Pennsylvania, d/o Jacob Bushong & Juliana Weigel Died: Between 17 and 31 December 1789, York County, Pennsylvania, shortly after giving birth to her daughter Anna Maria. Married: About 1782, York or Bedford County, Pennsylvania MATTHIAS AMEND Born: 21 January 1753, York County, Pennsylvania Died: 1822 or 1829 in Augusta County, Virginia or Howard County, Missouri Occupation: Millwright CHILDREN OF ELIZABETH BUSHONG AND MATTHIAS AMEND 1. Whisker 13 May 1782, Jacob Earnst, minor son of Adam Earnst deceased, by his own consent, agreed to be apprenticed to MATTHIAS AMAN, Millwright, York County for three years, to be taught trade, said Matthias to furnish food, drink, apparel, washing, lodging and 1 new suit of clothes at expiration. ----------------------- George Caleb Bingham born Augusta County, VA married to Mary Amend, d/o Matthias Amend and Elizabeth Bushong of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. He became quite a famous artist. Some of his work is in The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. You can read his entire story if you go to Wikipedia as we have only put a small portion of the information about him on this List. ------------------------ GEORGE CALEB BINGHAM Copied from Wikipedia Born in Augusta County, Virginia, Bingham was the second of seven children of Mary Amend and Henry Vest Bingham. Upon their marriage, Mary's father Mathias Amend gave Bingham ownership of the family Mill with 1, 180 acres of land and several slaves with the agreement that Mattias could live with the family for the rest of his life. Henry Bingham offered the land and mill as surety for a friend's debt and, when the friend died in 1818, all was lost. The Bingham family soon moved to Franklin, Missouri "where the land was said to be bountiful, fertile and cheap. Bingham was a self-taught artist. His sole childhood exposure to the field was a nine-year old boy, when famed American portrait artist Chester Harding visited Franklin looking for business, having recently sketch Daniel Boon in Warren County, Missouri. George assisted Harding during his brief stay, an experience that left a powerful impression. In 1823, Bingham's father Henry, then Judge of Howard County Court, died of malaria on 26 December at the age of thirty-eight. To keep the family going, Mary Bingham opened a school for girls; George, then twelve, worked as school janitor to help keep the family afloat. At age sixteen, Bingham apprenticed with cabinet maker Jesse Green. After Green moved away, Bingham apprenticed with another cabinet maker, Justinian Williams. Both tradesmen were Methodist ministers. While under their tutelage, Bingham studied religious texts, preached at camp meetings and thought about becoming a minister. He also considered becoming a lawyer. By age nineteen, Bingham was painting portraits for $20.00 apiece, often completing the works in a single day. He drummed up work in both Franklin and Arrow Rock and, while his painting abilities were still developing, succeeded in impressing his patrons with his strong draftsmanship and ability to capture the likeness of his subject. Soon Bingham was ready to travel to St. Louis to ply his trade but contacted measles. The illness left him weak and permanently bald. --------------------------- Researched and Submitted by Gloria Bushong

    2. Northern Virginia Daily 14 July 2011 New Market park's new director sees facility's potential to educate people By Preston Knight NEW MARKET -- In Troy Marshall's imaginary world as a child, he set up his own collection of "rusty" Civil War artifacts and created "Troy's Museum," an attraction that didn't pull in enough visitors for him to make a living out of it. At the Virginia Museum of the Civil War, he has the chance to prove how far he's come. On Sunday, the site, formerly known as the New Market Battlefield State Historical Park, officially welcomed its new director. There wasn't much need for a meet-and-greet -- Marshall has been the property's supervisor of historical interpretation since 2002. And while the museum isn't his, and instead belongs to Virginia Military Institute, Marshall has the opportunity to make his own mark on it. For the short term, that impression is focused on learning everything Scott Harris, the former director, did and looking at ways to increase the way the battlefield is promoted. "I'm taking over a vessel that's rigged out pretty good," Marshall said. He arrived in New Market a month before Harris with experience working at the Pamplin Historical Park in Petersburg and the Sherwood Forest Plantation near Williamsburg. A Petersburg native, Marshall often collected artifacts from the battlefield there, and was all ears when his grandfather shared stories about history. On a third-grade field trip to the College of William and Mary, where he would one day graduate, Marshall recalls being drawn to the interpreters and how that seemed to be a "cool" job. When he later determined there was a glut of people getting jobs teaching history in the classroom, he found that educating through museums or parks could be equally satisfying. "The industry has really come a long way," said Marshall, who received a master's degree in museum studies from the University of Oklahoma. His intent was to become a director somewhere, but opportunities were limited, especially when his focus was on keeping his family in the Shenandoah Valley. When Marshall learned that Harris was leaving to direct the James Monroe Museum at the University of Mary Washington, he said he was proactive in applying for the New Market job. In an email, Denman Zirkle, the director of the Shenandoah Valley Battlefields Foundation, said Marshall brings knowledge of history and interpretation to the table, but also a "fine" legacy at the battlefield park. "I am delighted at Troy's appointment," he said. Col. Keith Gibson, executive director of VMI museum operations, says in a news release that Marshall's skills will be particularly useful as the Battle of New Market's 150th anniversary approaches in 2014. Marshall said that event is a "big" one. This time, he is not building something as a child with a wild imagination. "From VMI's point of view, I'd like to think that they saw me as a good local asset," Marshall said. "It's definitely a win-win for me. It's an exciting change for me." -------------------------- Copied and Submitted by Gloria Bushong

    2. Somehow, I believe these Deshongs are related to the couple that married in 1767. Somewhere along the way the Bushong became a Deshong. 2. I am thinking that this couple might have moved down to Augusta County, Virginia as there were several Henry families there as early as 1772. They show up in Culpeper and Shenandoah County too plus a dozen other counties throughout Virginia. Gloria
