The Philadelphia Press Philadelphia, Pennsylvania 29 August 1859 Page 2 THE COURTS ON SATURDAY -- The case of Peter Hauck and Manassa Snyder, charged with the theft of twenty gallons of burning fluid, on the oath of Philip Bushong, was heard on Saturday morning on a writ of habeas corpus. The testimony showed that Manassa Snyder was in the employ of Philip Bushong, a manufacturer of burning fluid. The allegation is that Snyder delivered to Mr. Hauck a greater quantity of fluid than he charged on the books of his employer. Suspicions being entertained of the honestly of Snyder and Hauck, a watch was set, and the allegation is that, for three days in succession, the fraud was repeated. The habeas corpus was brought to procure the discharge of the defendants, but the Court refused to grant the prayer of the petitioner, and directed that bail be entered in $800 for their appearance to answer. ------------------------ Researched and Submitted by Gloria Bushong

Landis, of Lancaster County, were totally consumed by fire, together with about $3000 worth of lumber. About two years ago these gentlemen purchased a tract of woodland containing some 1500 acres, on which they built these mills, at a cost of $30,000. Their total loss is estimated at upwards of $50,000, as there was no insurance on either the mills or lumber. Boschong Subscribers, We posted about Mary Bushong who married Samuel Cowan and her daughter Hannah Cowan who married Michael Hess. Check the Boschong Archives for March 2009 and April 2009. We found these legal notices in an old newspaper concerning Mary Bushong Cowen and her estate. As you remember from the 1831 Will of her father John Bushong, her brothers John and Jacob were to oversee her Estate. It is curious that some researchers have Mary's death date different then 1855 or possibly the year before but according to this first legal notice it is clearly 1855 or before. And the curious part was that it didn't state that Mary was deceased as such, but inferred that John and Jacob were. --------------------- The Lancaster Examiner and Herald Lancaster, Pennsylvania 25 April 1855 Page 3, Column 3 The Estate of Mary Cowen In the Court of Common Pleas for the County of Lancaster. Boschong Subscribers, While working on a totally different Bushong (I am re-visiting Thomas Jackson Bushong) in Maryland, I ran across the following census record and am wondering if this Henry Bushon/Bushong is somehow related to the mysterious William Bushong found in that 1850 census in Strasburg, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Nearby in Maryland in the 1830 census is a George Houck and family who almost fits in the age range for the George Houk in the 1850 census in Pennsylvania with William Bushong living in household. I continue to seek an obit for this William Bushong but so far I have come up with none after making several telephone calls to Pennsylvania. Possibly he did not stay in Pennsylvania very long and died somewhere else, maybe Maryland? --------------------- 1830 Federal Census: Maryland 3rd District, Baltimore County Page 106 HENRY BUSHON 1 male under 5 years of age 1 male 30 and under 40 years of age 1 female 5 and under 10 years of age 1 female 30 and under 40 years of age Nearby GEORGE HOUCK 2 males 5 and under 10 years of age 1 male 10 and under 15 years of age 1 male 40 and under 50 years of age 1 female 10 and under 15 years of age 1 female 40 and under 50 years of age ------------------------- Researched and Submitted by Gloria Bushong
Gloria, I agree with you. I also have found that Isaac did not receive recognition for his service in the Confederacy because he served in the Militia instead of the regular army. (The shame of it all is that the National Guard soldiers who have served in Afghanistan and Iraq do not get equal Veterans benefits today). While living in Virginia, I was told by an attendant at FIVE FORKS BATTLE FIELD Park that Isaac did not show up in any military confrontations. Well, here is another case of research being taken down after I have posted it to the List. I remember posting, a long time ago, the information that Rick just put on from the county history. It was included in the posts about Augustine Bushong. I am getting really tired of this. First all my Texas research and now this. Gloria
Rick, I believe it is posted to the List. Gloria
Hello Readers, I couldn't find this posted to the list, so.... It explains what happened to Barbara Keller, wife of Augustine Bushong, after his death in 1830. First this... "In Columbia Co., Ohio. where Augustine (Bushong) passed on, wife Barbara married Abraham Meyers, before they came to Hancock Co., Ohio. in 1832." by S(Rodabaugh) Hanley. Then this, in Hancock County, Ohio... "Abraham Myers, wife and three step-sons, John, Jacob and Isaac Bushong, also John Musser, came with the Rodabaughs. Myers settled on the southwest quarter of Section 30, and Jacob and Isaac Bushong lived with him. John Bushoug and his wife, Anna, settled and died on Section 36, where their son, Simon, now lives. Isaac, who resides on Section 32, is the only one of the old stock living. The Bushongs were born in Virginia. Musser, a native of Pennsylvania, settled on the northwest quarter of Section 25, now owned by Simon Rodabaugh. His son, Jacob, resides southwest of the old farm." Source: History of Hancock County, Ohio: containing a history of the county, its ... By Robert C. Brown, Warner, Beers & Co. Herb and Bill, I have learned that the books from the Toms Brook Cemetery have been kept by various people living in the area through the years but that they now are in the hands of the Lutheran Church at Toms Brook. Monday, I am going to call the church and hopefully they will be able to help locate the graves of Isaac and first wife Cevilla. Gloria
Gloria, Thank you for your response and adamant pursuit of documented information. That is why I shared what information that I had with the source of that information. I am wondering why.......Next time I go to New Market, I am going to see if find the exact spot. Meanwhile, I think I'll put a query out on the Shenandoah List. Second wife Sarah Ann (Mort) Bushong is buried in St. Johns Cemetery now called St. Johns United Church of Christ Cemetery near Edinburg. Her tombstone reads: Sarah A. Bushong 11 July 1838 1 April 1910 If there isn't a tombstone for Isaac and his first wife, if we could find where they are buried, and I suspect that they are buried together, possibly the descendants could start a fund to have a tombstone erected.
