Tell me how we know that Isaac Newton Bushong born 10 November 1854 is the son of Isaac Bushong and Susan Buckwalter? It there an obit or some other proof? Somehow I have missed something. Newton is never in a census with Isaac and Susan. He is living with Martin Bushong as a domestic servant in the 1870 census, but that hardly qualifies as a brother. 1870 Federal Census: Pennsylvania Upper Leacock Township, 238th District, Lancaster County Enumerated 23 July 1870 Page 139B Lines 16-20, HH 357/372 Martin Bushong 23/Male/White/Farmer/----$2100/PA Mary Bushong 21/Female/White/KeepingHouse/PA Morris Bushong 10monthsBornAugust/Male/White/PA NEWTON BUSHONG 15/Male/White/DomesticServant/AttendedSchool/PA Francis Hahn 22/Female/White/DomesticServant/PA Gloria

Rick made the following statement: "You know, we're talking about Andrew and William, older brothers of the famous Albert "Doc" Bushong. The Dentist/Major League Base Ball Catcher - inventor of the catcher's mitt and namesake of Bushong Kansas...." -------------------- My comments: The Bushongs surely do like to embellish on family stories, particularly this family, and it is one of those stories that has no truth in it unless "Doc" was a child genius at age 4 years. The first glove was invented in 1860 and used in public in 1870 by Cincinnati Red Stockings catcher Doug Allison who wore a buckskin mitten when he had been suffered a hand injury. By 1875 it was used by a lot of catchers and by 1890 by all. "Doc" might have improved in some way on a glove that was already in existence, but in no way was he the inventor. 1860 Federal Census: Pennsylvania Reading City, Northwest District, Berks County Enumerated 20 July 1860 Page 1070 and 1071 Lines 39-40 and 1-5, HH 2427/2553 Charles Bushong 33/Male/Clerk/-------$200/PA Margaretta Bushong 30/Female/PA Andrew Bushong 10/Male/AttendedSchool/PA William Bushong 9/Male/AttendedSchool/PA Franklin Bushong 7/Male/AttendedSchool/PA ALBERT BUSHONG 4/Male/PA {Albert "Doc" Bushong} Sarah Bushong 2/Female/PA --------------- Researched and Submitted by Gloria Bushong
Rick, Thanks for the additional information. I broke my rule of not researching and posting when I am tired or it is late in the evening as I tend to get sloppy. LOL. Probably if I had gone back and looked at my own research and posts in the BOSCHONG Archives for October 2009, I would have discovered that Andrew Moore Bushong was indeed the son of Charles Bushong and wife Margaret. My late husband Russell gave me moral support and helped carry the heavy books to work tables in the various courthouses and photo copied various Deeds and Wills when I found them. He drove the car on our trips. I put his name on the posts to honor him as my husband. ------- I did a lot of research on Bushong, Kansas. It was part of the underground railroad system during the Civil War. A group of Quakers from Pennsylvania settled there and worked with Henry, Jacob and Gilbert Bushong of Bird-in-Hand, plus other Quakers living in Pennsylvania and Ohio to smuggle runaway slaves through their system, into Kansas and parts West. "Doc" Bushong was from this ancestry and since he was a famous ball player, around the turn of the century, they re-named the town Bushong in honor of his family. The town is now abandoned. Russell and I drove through there on our way West on one of our many trips. We were very disappointed in what we saw. FYI - Did you know that "Doc" Bushong was involved in a big baseball scandal and that is the reason he left baseball to become a dentist? ------- Gloria
I believe we're looking at the same Andrew Bushong in both Philadelphia and in Illinois. The census taker, in Philly - James G. Oberlan - or something like that, did not seem to understand the instructions. Nearly every one in his District could NOT read or write, even Teachers, and students "attending school", the students he signified in the occupation field with a "PS" for public school (?). So the "can't read or write" is a red herring. Andrew is found July 6 1870 in Vermilion County, Illinois, and between then and July 28th, 1870 he went home to see his family, he may have talked his brother, William August Bushong into going back to Illinois with him, as William August is not listed with his parents in 1880 and also William died in Cook County, Illinois, Mar 14 1933. Both Andrew and William are buried with their wives in Spring Hill Cemetery and Mausoleum, Danville, Vermilion County, Illinois. Also, Feb 23 1872, about a year and a half after Andrew visited home, he was married in Vermilion County. You know, we're talking about Andrew and William, older brothers of the famous Albert "Doc" Bushong. The Dentist/Major League Base Ball Catcher - inventor of the catcher's mitt and namesake of Bushong Kansas.... By the way, who spotted the Bushongs in the Philadelphia census, you Gloria or Russell? Who ever did deserves a medal, because the last name was totally scrawled and is not indexed. I had to look through a bunch of books and pages to find the 26th District for July 28th! I found it here on Familysearch.org. Boschong Subscribers, Just so you know, since some of you have been wondering who Rick Bushong is posting to the List recently. Rick is a descendant of Nickolas Bushong and he believes that all of the Bushongs in this country are the descendants of only two Immigrants that being John Bushong of 1731 and Nickolas Bushong of 1732. I do not agree with him nor do some other seasoned researchers. Rick and I have a very amicable relationship via e-mail so not to worry about a rift, we just both have a different perspective of things. Only more research and documentation and time will tell the true story about the Bushongs. You must remember that we have a very large gap of information from 1718 when the first Bushong appears in the tax records of Chester County, Pennsylvania until the 1880 census when we can view families in the census with their relationships. We can assume at best and we can fill in some with obits and Wills, but the problem is the obits in the very early Bushongs is sorely lacking and Bushongs were not very conscientious about writing Wills and preferred settling with their children before they died. Also most of them did not baptize their children so those records are sparse. Gloria

Boschong Subscribers, I found this marriage announcement in the 1865 new spaper in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. It lead me to ask a few questions about her lineage. We know that Elizabeth Bushong who wrote her Will in 1851 mentioned her niece Hannah Bushong as daughter of her brother Jacob BUT is this the same Hannah E. Bushong who married Tobias Royer? Elizabeth was a very astute business woman who made a codicil to her Will in January 1865 and would have made another codicil to her Will to include Hannah with her married name as Royer in November of that same year since that would have been the legal thing to do and would have prevented a hassle in trying to prove legally that Hannah was one of the heirs to her estate. Plus we present the following evidence: In the household of her brother Jacob Bushong in the 1850 census, he does have a daughter named Hannah age 17 years and she is the Hannah mentioned in her Aunt Elizabeth Bushong's Will. (BOSCHONG Archives March 2007). She would have been 27 in the 1860 census. 1850 Federal Census: Pennsylvania East Lampeter Township, Lancaster County Enumerated 26 August 1850 page 201A Lines 27-29, HH 100/105 Jacob Bushong 60/Male/Retired/$13,000/PA Harriet Bushong 20/Female/PA Hannah Bushong 17/Female/PA Then we find in the 1860 census, Jacob Bushong living with a girl named Hannah Bushong now listed as age 23 which could be the Hannah that married Tobias Royer. We are wondering if someone contact ancestry and had them change this age since her age in the 1860 census would have been 27 if she was Jacob's daughter. It is getting to the point with all of the changes going on that you cannot trust the census records unless you use the microfilmed versions in the libraries. If this age was changed to fit with the Hannah who married Tobias Royer, then you will note that this Hannah Bushong does not fit ANY of the census records age wise for the Hannah E. Bushong who married to Tobias Royer. So...... who were the real parents of this Hannah Elizabeth Bushong living in the household of Kelly in 1850, household of Jacob in 1860 and married to Tobias Royer? You will find the following Bushong children who are living in the 1850 census without parents: Elizabeth Bushong age 13 years, living in a Kelly household {Hannah Elizabeth Bushong?} George Bushong age 5 Martin Bushong, age 3 years, living in a Gochenour household Anna Maria age 1, living with in a Gochenour household. Where are their parents? Now in the 1860 census a George, Martin and Anna Maria are living in the household of Isaac and Susan Bushong. Either one of two things happened. Isaac was married before and his wife died and left him with young children which he farmed out in the 1850 census, OR, he had a brother who died and left these children and Isaac stepped up and took them into his household in 1860. ---------------------- The Lancaster Intelligencer Wednesday, 29 November 1865 Page 3 MARRIAGES ROYER - BUSHONG On the 28th instant, by the same, Mr. Tobias Royer of Lancaster to Miss Hannah E. What we need is the will of Samuel Cowan died in 1862, in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, it should list Hannah Hess, Amos Cowan, Samuel Cowan, and Mary Zuck. Anyone seen one? But otherwise,it looks like the Pennsylvania Cowans are the correct line, descended from John and Eve Eckman Bushong. Only one of this Cowan line moved (with her husband) to Virginia and later to Indiana, and that's Hannah Cowan Hess. The rest stayed in the Lancaster County area, all close to Mary Bushong Hess, and close to all seven of Mary's brothers and sisters - they all are buried in Lancaster County. Below we find three of Samuel and Mary Bushong Cowan's children. Well, Things with the Pennsylvania Bushongs are never a easy as one may think. Much early research and books written about this family were done with absolutely no documentation. Mostly just word of mouth including the Slaymaker book. Here's some food for thought: This does seem to bring up a lot of unanswered questions as I was under the impression from a direct descendant in New Market who knows her history well, that Mary and husband Samuel Cowan and daughter Hannah and husband Michael Hess went to Rockingham County, VA right after the settlement of her father's 1831 Will, (between 1831 - 1833). Refer back to the BOSCHONG Archives for March 2009 and April 2009. In John's 1831 Will, there is only one child mentioning belonging to Mary Bushong Cowan and that was Hannah and yet she and husband Samuel Cowan are credited with having three children: Amos, Samuel and Hannah. Since we have a Mary Cowan who died in 1855 buried in Chester County and with probate administered by John and Jacob Bushong, we are now wondering if there could have been two Mary Bushongs who married Cowans? We know there was a lot of intermarriage back then. Very strange indeed. We find a Samuel Cowan and Hannah in Rockingham County, Virginia that fit with Mary Bushong and Samuel Cowan. So..........remembering that John Bushong, the father, owned 112 acres of land in Virginia and made trips back and forth from Pennsylvania to Virginia in his lifetime, an assumption has been made that Mary was born in Pennsylvania. She might have been but then again, she might have been born in Rockingham County, VA. There is a Mary Cowan living in Rockingham County with a husband named John of the same age as the couple in Pennsylvania. And remembering that in one census you may find someone under one name and in the next a different name........ Samuel in Will and John in census......... Various Cowan's 1. Hannah Cowan born 18 March 1812, buried in Madison County, Indiana 2. Samuel B. Cowan born 1 March 1817 buried in Salem Evangelical Reformed Church, PA 3. Samuel Cowan born around 1816-17 buried in Rockingham County, VA 4. Amos B. Hess 13/Female/AttendedSchool/VA ------------------- So the big question is, which of these people are the true Samuel and Mary Bushong Cowan mentioned in the 1831 Will of John Bushong. Gloria
And that makes sense, since their daughter Hannah was also living in Rockingham County, VA. GB
I was under the impression that Mary and Samuel went to Rockingham County, VA as that is where I found them. Gloria
Yes, Hannah Cowan Hess, was in Rockingham County, Virginia for the 1850 Census. But Samuel, Mary and Samuel Jr. were in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania for the 1850 Census, so Michael Hess took his bride to Virginia. Hannah Hess died in 1878, in Madison County, Indiana, and is buried in the Ovid Mt. Zion Lutheran Cemetery - Adams Twp, Madison, Indiana, along with Michael Hess, her husband. Many of their descendants are buried in the area, too. Well, readers, we have a real mystery... Neither Samuel Cowan nor this Mary Cowan, are dead in 1855, they are both listed in the /1860 Census/, living in Upper Leacock Township. Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Family 257. In the Census, Samuel's age is given as 78 years, estimated birth 1782, born in Ireland, and Mary's age is given as 81, estimated birth 1779, born in Pennsylvania. Their son, Samuel age 42, estimated birth 1818, is living with them. Isn't this our Mary's family? Then, back to the tombstones, these transcriptions, (by me) from _photo's_ , in the cemetery at the Salem Evangelical Reformed Church, Hellers, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. In Memory of Mary Cowan Wife of Samuel Cowan Born Oct. 14, 1778 Died Jun. 10, 1860 Aged 81y 7m 27d w/o Samuel Cowan ------------------ next stone.. In memory of Samuel Cowan Died Apr. 21, 1862 Aged about 80 years. ------------------ Also interred with them, in the same cemetery, are sons, Amos, Samuel, and daughter, Mary - all with _photos_ of their stones, and several grandchildren. So, if this isn't our Mary, who is it? Let me offer this as a possible explanation... /There is another Mary Cowan/, buried in the Upper Octorara Church Cemetery, Parkesburg, Chester County, Pennsylvania. Here's a transcription of her stone (by me) from a _photo_.. James Cowan Born Nov. 12, 1767 Died Nov. 18, 1850 Mary Cowan Born Jun. 11, 1774 Died /_Mar. 11, 1855_/ ------------------ Mary is on the same stone as James, who is obviously her husband. Since the news paper notice says that April 19th, 1855, an account of Mary Cowen's estate was filed, that would appear to be a reasonable amount or time to file an account of the estate, from the time of death, Mar 11, 1855. Could it be, this Mary Cowan, died in Mar 11 1855, that the paper was referencing? If so, what are Jacob Bushong and John Bushong doing involved with this Mary's estate? Did the paper make a mistake? Yes, her husband, James, had passed away, so they would need someone else take care of the estate, but how did Bushongs get involved?. This Mary is buried in Chester County, and the estate was in Lancaster. Could she have died in Lancaster County, but been buried in Chester County, with her husband, James, who preceded her? So Census records and tombstones say one thing, a newspaper says another. Which Mary is which? That's all - Rick Bushong
I can only go by what is in the newspaper so perhaps you have the wrong Mary Cowan or the tombstone was put up some time after her death and they got it wrong. I don't know what to tell you. Where did you get her death date besides the tombstone? Gloria
I really don't know. He doesn't show up on FindAGrave. I will e-mail the Carroll County Genealogical Society and ask them. Perhaps they will know. Gloria
