His mother, Abigail, is age 50, again; it shows she was born in 1800 in New Jersey. Charles is listed as being born in Pennsylvania. There is also a James Borton, who may be a brother, born in 1837 in South Carolina. Now if you look at the actual image, the head of this household appears to be ISAAC BORTON, JR., age 22 (born abt. 1828.) The folks at Ancestry interpreted the handwriting as "ISAAC NEWTON", but you'll have to look at it to judge yourself; to me it is a lot closer to BORTON than Newton. At any rate, he was also born in New Jersey. There is one Isaac Borton in NJ on the 1840 census: Name: Isaac Borton Township: Evesham County: Burlington State: New Jersey Free White Persons - Males - Under 5: 3 Free White Persons - Males - 5 thru 9: 1 Free White Persons - Males - 20 thru 29: 1 Free White Persons - Females - Under 5: 1 Free White Persons - Females - 5 thru 9: 1 Free White Persons - Females - 20 thru 29: 1 Total - All Persons (Free White, Free Colored, Slaves): 8 Persons Employed in Navigation of Canals, Lakes, Rivers: 1 Free White Persons - Under 20: 6 Free White Persons - 20 thru 49: 2 Total Free White Persons: 8 Total All Persons - Free White, Free Colored, Slaves: 8 You can see there are two persons between 20-49, must be the head of household, Isaac, and his wife. That might be a location to check out. Dave Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
