I know that he was a Justice of the Peace and as such, according to my grandmother (Gladys Borton Molohon), he would frequently provide $5 to each couple for whom he performed a marriage. He was short, not particularly good looking (big nose), he was a stock-raiser, he and is brother married sisters (Margaret Brown), in retirement he frequented Terra Haute, Ind, nearby, he died of kidney disease (according to my cousin in Denver whose grandmother Mary Boland, was one of the four daughters). He sold housing lots in the town of Borton where there was a grain elevator (pictures?). His oldest son, John Walter (J. W. or Walter Borton) was my great grandfather. He banked (?) in Oakland, Illinois, a town west of Borton/Isabel. And that his son William (Uncle Billy) looked like him (I have a photo of William and Emmett around 1920. What is your relationship to the Bortons of Borton Illinois? Robert Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Let me know if there is anything else. There are some issues with the Betty Mann book, especially the parts where she traces our family to Royalty. I have been looking into that for years and have only straightened it out recently, thanks to new research done by the Packer family. Sorry to confirm that our ancestor Phillip Packer Jr. was the illegitimate offspring of Phillip Sr. and not the Phillip Packer Jr. who was descended from Edward I. Author: JamesBorton7 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.borton/68.2.3.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I believe that this is a different Henry Borton. I have researched the family for several years and I have a pretty clear picture of the branches of the family. They all originate in Anyho, with William, who siblings spelled there surname, Bourton, which I believe that you will find is the name of that general region prior to the 1500's and are of Anglo-Saxon heritage. William's Grandson, John became a Quaker and moved his family to "West Jersey" in America in the mid 1600's. Another branch of the family left Anyho in the 1800's and emigrated to Wellington, Ontario, Canada. The balance of those with the surname are still primarily located in England. Among those of note are Colonel Arthur Close Borton, who's sons were prominent in WWI. Also Neville Arthur Blackley Borton, Vicar. His Grandfather, James Borton was an Attorney in Bury St., Edmund, England, starting in the late 1700's. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: JamesBorton7 Surnames: Borton, Packer Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.borton/229/mb.ashx Message Board Post: There were a couple of issues in the Beatty Mann book regarding Phillip Packer and our line to the royal family. He had two sons names Phillip, both of whom lived to adulthood. She also listed children who were born to Phillip after the death of his wife. Finally I have the answers in a Book: On Footings From The Past - The Packers in England by Donna Smith Packer. She did extensive research in England, with professional assistance and got to the bottom of things. Phillip had a mistress that he kept in Ireland and raised duel families. After the death of his wife, he moved them to his castle and married the mistress. The Phillip who came to America is from his relationship to the mistress and is not descended from Royals. None of his children by his mistress were entitled to any property, so his son Phillip signed on as a servant to a family who was coming to America and that is how he managed to get here. 3. Hi Peter: I would be very interested if a better and more readable copy were made of the History of the Borton and Mason families book. I have tried previously to get hold of a copy of a couple of Borton histories but they are in the reference sections of libraries in the States and to date have not been able to get to any. My Great Grandmother was Julia Borton who married Henry Wrighton and had 15 children, one of them my Grandfather Charles. Barbara Adair, Ottawa, Canada.
