He was the Son of Samuel Borton and part of the Borton Family that migrated to Fulton County in about 1848. His letters are important because he was stationed at Jonston's Island prison for confederate soliders in lake Erie in 1864. They want to feature hios letters and are looking for a photo of him or his family. If anyone has them please contact me or John at the Fulton County Historical Society. My great-grandfather Francis Marion MARVIN, age 3, appears with his parents Edward Kemp Marvin and mother Lucy Ann (COOPER) Marvin in the 1860 census in Mill Creek, Williams County, Ohio. He is in the household of John and Margaret CLAY in Franklin Township, Richand County, Ohio, at the 1870 census. According to family records Francis Marion MARVIN married Ella Lucretia KIME (of Mahoning County, Ohio) in 1874. (I have not found a marriage record.) The 1919 obituary of Francis Marion Marvin says, "Left fatherless at the age of six, he made his home first with Mr. John Clay, near Shelby and later with Mr. John Barton of Williams County, O." I am trying to learn about "Mr. John Barton of Williams County." I am now wondering whether Francis Marin Marvin lived with a BORTON family rather a BARTON family. In particular, a biographical sketch of Job Borton and wife Mary Cliffton says, "They have four children by adoption." Does anyone on this ist know anything about the children raised by Job and Mary Borton? Frances Van Scoy, FrancesVanScoy@aol.com Van Scoy-Knapp reunion, vsk03@aol.com - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - From: Karen Borton <silence@bright.net> Subject: [BORTON-L] JOB BORTON, son of Bethuel and Rebecca (Cliffton) Borton, Williams Co, OH Date: Fri, 22 Dec 2000 18:43:33 -0800 Posted on: Borton Biographies Reply Here: http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/gc/surnames/bor/BortonBios/10 Surname: BORTON, CLIFFTON ------------------------- - County of Williams, Ohio Historical & Biographical by Weston A. Goodspeed & Charles Blanchard, published in 1882. Page 655 in chapter for Brady Township. JOB BORTON, son of Bethuel and Rebecca (Cliffton) Borton, was born in Burlington County, N.J., November 29, 1818, the eighth of a family of eleven children. He traces his genealogy back to one of three brothers who came from England to this country before the Revolutionary war. In the fall of 1836, Job Borton, in company with mother, four brothers and two sisters, came West in wagons, and located in Fulton County. Here Job bought some land, but soon after sold and selected the farm on which he lives in this township, but for seven years resided with his brother John, until he had paid for his land, engaged in raising peppermint and distilling its oil. September 9, 1845, he married Mary R. Cliffton, daughter of Samuel Cliffton, of Welsh ancestry. They have four children by adoption. The family are Quakers, and Mrs. Borton, at a monthly meeting at Rollin, Mich., four years ago, was appointed an Evangelist. The patent to Mr. Bortons original land was signed by Andrew Jackson, and the farm was increased to 400 acres, all of which have been deeded by Mrs. Borton to his children, with the exception of eighty, on which he and Mrs. Borton are now living in retirement.

Many were outspoken, some like Ezra Borton (Born in Stark County Ohio and moved to Fulton County about 1852) were part of the Garrison movement that burned the constitution because of its protection of slavery calling it a "league with the Devil" Others were active in organizing and operating the underground railroad. Unfortunately much of this is undocumented. As we approach the 150th Anniversary of the Civil War, I am interested if anyone has information on Borton's involved in the Abolitionist Movement such as John Woolman (Grandson of John and Elizabeth Borton). Letters or other information would help. Later on Many Borton enlisted in the Civil war, but the period that I am looking at is 1750 to 1860 period. BUT he is also right it is almost indispensable if you are doing Borton Genealogy, and it is surprising there is not more errors. She started with Freeman Mason's 1908 book "History of the Borton and Mason Families in Europe and North America, and considered her book the second volume of that book (see page 4 of Betty's book). Strangely, some of the pictures that she got from Freeman Masons book got mislabeled in her book. My guess is that the mistakes were made by the publisher in their haste to get it out. For instance the pictures purported to be Samuel Borton and Mercy Owen on page 60 of her book are directly from Freeman Mason's book in th epicture page between pages 164 and 165, but in Freeman Mason's book they are listed as Asa Borton and Elizabeth Hazen (I think correctly). Our family collaborated with Betty Mann as much as we could and several items from our collection are in her book. I think she did a splendid job.. ! However mistakes happen. Some areas of the Borton family did not provide much information creating some holes that she could not help, she was also getting a stream of information as the book went to the press, way after her cutoff date, she kept trying to insert data, but eventually she could not make further additions, and often did not have time to prove or disprove information that she received at a late date, she admits that in her book and says ".maybe some future researcher will be able to do the proving" . We owe her a lot! I do not believe that Betty's book is curently available, but several libraries have it. Freeman Mason's book is available on-line from Google Books and Archive.org for free download (Archive.org has the better copy). Freeman Mason's book also has Rhoda Packers 1829 deposition to the supreme court, whitch is a wealth of genealogical information on the first Packers in North America. (She was contesting a will of an estate in England). The other Book that is valuable at least for Asa's family and their decendants is "The Hazen Family In North America" by Tracy Elliot Hazen PHD, Published in 1949. It has Elizabeth Hazen listed and all of her and Asa Borton's children. He traces her linage back to Edward Hazen, who came to America's Hudson Bay colony in about 1638 (and back into England before that), almost 30 years before John Borton came to New Jersey. Additionaly, Elizabeth Hazen's great Grandfather John Hazen was married to Mercy Bradstreet making Elizabeth Hazen a direct descendent of Gov Simon Bradstreet and Gov Thomas Dudley both early Governors of the Mass Bay colony (Founder of Cambridge and signer of the charter for Harvard). Bradstreet and Dudley came to America in 1830 with the Massachusetts Bay Colony Charter. For those looking for blue blood this is pretty blue. Ancestry.com has Tracy Hazen's book, but I could only get it to download 1 page at a time (1100 pages). I downloaded the first 250 pag! es and converted it to a searchable PDF. Several libraries have this book also. Lyle Borton Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I have the orginal family history wrote by Asa Borton, it is a great read, he talks about hanging blankets over the doors to keep out the wolves... My favorite quote is "...about this time our kids started to get mad or married and leave home". I also have his history of the marriages and children born to each of their 10 children (up to 1883). There is the family humorous poem , and the poem read while presenting a new hat to Asa to replace the foxskin one. For those wanting to know what happned to Ahimaaz's second wife Caroline Davidson, he talks a bit about it in the family update on each child. The comment in the eopening remarks "...every little family trouble (if there ever was any) has been buried too deep to ever be remembered." is a backhand referal to the fact that this was the first time that the family got together since the Civil War when some of Asa's family tried to lynch one of Asa's son-in-laws for what they precived as southern sympathies. All sides came to this hatchet burying reunion. I also have a picture of this reunion (I think) and another one, and am a bit confused whitch is whitch and who everyone is... but great fun. Almost all of this information came from My Great Grandfather Asa Jr. I would love to have an electronic copy of the orginal Tribune articles.... If anyone wants transcriptions/copies of what I have please e-mail me at lyle.borton@comcast.net or contact me through this note. Ahimmaaz disolved his relationship with his second wife. According to the family geneology paper wrote by Asa Sr.in 1883. Caroline tired of her family and they desolved their partnership. At that point "Hima skiped out into Michigan" I do not have any idea if Caroline married again. Ahimmaz did. Interesting he was married 3 times. Each time he married a 17 year old, thats how you have 22 children I guess... I have the orginal papers Asa wrote on each of his chidren in 1883 also the history he wrote of his family from when he married Elizabeth Hazen untill 1883, if anyone is interested. lyle.borton@comcast.net Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
