    1. [Borton] Francis Marion MARVIN and BORTON family in 1870-1874
    2. The obituary of my great-grandfather Francis Marion MARVIN says, “Left fatherless at the age of six [in 1863], [Francis Marion Marvin] made his home first with Mr. John CLAY, near Shelby [, Richland County, O.] and later with Mr. John Barton of Williams County, O. . . ." I strongly suspect that "Barton" should be "BORTON." A man named John Borton owned a farm near that of Garrett and Esther BAUM, an uncle and aunt of Ella Lucretia KIME (Francis's future wife) in Franklin Township, Fulton County. I have found published a statement that JOB BORTON "was the father of three sons and' one daughter and also took three different children and reared them to woman and man's estate. " I've also read that Job Borton and his wife "have three children and twenty-one grandchildren, and have, besides, reared four children by adoption." Pamela Pattison Lash posted on her blog at http://williamscountyohiogenealogy.blogspot.com/2010/12/black-sheep-stories-of-williams-county_07.html "On 12 Nov 1873 BENJAMIN BORTON was named guardian for Elmer Whinnery (20Y on 7 June 1873), Steven Whinnery (15Y on 15 May 1873), and Hiram’s nephew, Albert Whinnery (19Y on 8 June 1873), the last guardianship was filed on 3 Feb 1873 (case number 1564)." I'm looking for records or narratives that might confirm the obituary statement that my Francis Marvin lived with a Barton/Borton family in Williams or Fulton County. I was at the library in Bryan last month and hope to return in May or June next year, so advice on where to look in person in Williams or Fulton counties would be helpful. [Context: Francis Marion Marvin was the son of Edward Kemp Marvin and Lucy Ann Cooper, both natives of Richland County, Ohio. The family moved to Williams County where they lived in Hamer and Edward worked as a carpenter. After Edward died Francis was sent to live with a Clay family in Richland County. Relatives of John Clay lived near the Marvin family in Hamer. John Clay died in 1870 and Francis returned to northwestern Ohio. After his marriage in 1874 Francis and his wife moved back to Richland County.]

Desperatly searching for my long lost family. Nan and Grandads names were Edith Amelia Borton (Nee Lamb) and William Borton. The children that i know of them having (not in date order, but they were all born in the 1940s-50s) were my Mother Maureen Louise, John, Arthur and Gordon. Mum left the family for one reason or another and I know she had children in the 1960s with the names Thomas, Karen, Rachel and not sure if its Ann or Sandra.....As far as I can see the family still has strong ties to Coventry. I will check out the site you referenced re the Borton, Ill 1910 plat. When my grandmother and I visited in 1963, she reflected on the changes re both Borton and Isabel from the time she last visited family there forty years previous. Obviously, without the railroad/s and the growth of the other towns in the area, there wasn't any justification for the existence of either hamlet.Further, I was saddened by the absence of Jesse Borton's farm house just east of town as it was a very real connection with my Borton ancestors. Thank you again for sharing this more recent information. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Oh my, how very sad. It was a mess. Concerning the church; on a 1910 Borton plat map (can be seen at Ancestry.com http://search.ancestry.com/Browse/View.aspx?dbid=1127&path=Illinois.Edgar, 1910.28) there is a church labeled U.B. to the southeast of the park. That is where the owner of my church window told me the church was located. He also mentioned that it may have been a Methodist Church. I'm thinking this must have been a United Brethern Church. To tie these 2 together, I found this: "The Evangelical United Brethren subsequently merged with the Methodist Church in 1968 to form the United Methodist Church." So this all makes sense. There was no one around yesterday to ask. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. My grandmother was a Borton; her grandfather Jesse established the town on land he owned beginning after 1870. She and I were last there in 1963. We drove through town and passed a church on a street corner. I believe it was a Methodist Church (resembled many churches built in that period after the Civil War in the Midwest). She mentioned the church in coversation while we were there..but the details escape me. A recent Google Map view suggested not many of the original structures--homes or businesses or the church--remain. I would think more information may be available at the Edgar County Historical Society in Paris...perhaps even photos and documents of the church...also..a winner of the Congressional Medal of Honor from WWII was from Borton. Good luck on your research. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I am now in possession of an old church window that came out of a church in Borton about 20 years ago (according to the owner of the window) when it was being torn down. The church was across from the South East corner of the city park. Does anyone know of any churches in the town? Thanks so much.
