Hi Valerie I was interested in the CHISHOLMS you listed. I have two separate CHISHOLM families in the same areas and yours appear to be a further group. My first batch descend from William c. Ashkirk ROX 24/11/1713 =Jane DOUGLAS 14/12/1733 Galashiels Earlier info is v. tentative. The second descend from Walter b. Westruther BER 14/4/1787=Alison ROBERTSON 2/7/1815 Their numerous progeny were around the parishes you mention but so far I have made no links with your names. Would you like to give the ancesters of your group so that we can check out for any common forebears?? best wishes Doug & Kit Leitch Solihull UK -----Original Message----- From: Valerie/Rowan Henshaw <henshawv@ocean.com.au> To: BORDER-L@rootsweb.com <BORDER-L@rootsweb.com> Date: 21 April 2000 07:58 Subject: Help with Berwickshire place names please
Hi again Doug, My 3xgt-grandfather was Benjamin CHISHOLM who married Isabella GRAY in Gordon, BEW in 1811. (Isabella b. c1790, dau. of William GRAY, joiner, and Margaret ?). I believe Benjamin was the son of Thomas Chisholm, ag. lab, and was probably the same Benjamin Chisholm who appears in the BEW OPRs as being christened at Legerwood 16 Dec 1785. On the marriage entry in the Gordon Parish Register, Benjamin was "in the Parish" and Isabel(la) was "in the Parish of Earlston". Benjamin and Isabella had six children that I know of (all born at Georgefield, parish of Earlston, where Benjamin was a hind) : John 1822, Margaret 1824, Andrew 1827, James 1829 (my 2x gt-grandfather who married Janet BRODIE at Blainslie in 1855), Robert 1831 and William 1833. As you will see there is a large gap between their marriage in 1811 and the birth of the first known child in 1822. I have to assume there were children born in those eleven years, including probably a Benjamin and a Thomas. There is a Thomas born to Benjamin Chisholm, no mothers name given, christened 31 May 1812 at Gordon, so he may be from my family; also a George, son of Benjamin, c 14 Aug 1814 Gordon. If I had all the births it would help in providing clues to the names of Benjamin's and Isabella's parents. In the 1851 census Benjamin was a farm labourer at Birkenside, par. of Legerwood, where he was present with wife Isabella and children Margaret, Andrew, James & Robert who were all unmarried and working as farm labourers. I believe that two families found in the 1851 Census are probably sons of Benjamin's from the missing years: Thomas Chisholm b. c1812 Gordon m. Helen BUTTLER working as a farm labourer at Birkenside with children Benjamin, Agnes, Isabella & Robert; and George Chisholm b. c1814 Earlston m. Janet WEDDEL working as a farm labourer at East Moriston with children Catherine, Benjamin, George, John & Isabel. There is an MI for George Chisholm and Janet Weddel/Waddle in Makerstoun churchyard. 1861 Census Earlston dist 2, pg 15 - Millerstain Row of Cottages Benjamin CHISHOLM head mar 73 no occupation b BEW Ledgerwood Isabella CHISHOLM wife mar 69 b BEW Earlston Andrew CHISHOLM son unm 35 ag lab b BEW Earlston Margaret CHISHOLM dau unm 38 ag servt b BEW Earlston Isabella died at Birkenside in 1867 and Benjamin died there in 1870. In both cases their son Andrew was the informant. At the 1871 census for Birkenside, Andrews occupation was given as in charge of house. He was unmarried and living with his spinster sister Margaret, who was a housekeeper. Some other cenus entries which I believe relate to "my" Chisholms are : 1861 Census Earlston dist 3, pg 11 - Park Thomas CHISHOLM head mar 47 farm servt b BEW Gordon Helen CHISHOLM wife mar 41 b BEW Lauder (nee BUTLER?) I have quite a lot of unconfirmed information on descendants of my 2xgt-grandfather, James CHISHOLM and his wife Janet BRODIE. Thank you for your response, Best wishes, Valerie Henshaw Melbourne, Australia Doug Leitch wrote: > Hi Valerie > I was interested in the CHISHOLMS you listed. > > I have two separate CHISHOLM families in the same areas and yours appear to > be a further group. > > My first batch descend from William c.
