My g. grandfather William Turner ARNOTT was killed 29 June 1900 at the age of 34 during construction of the dam for Talla Reservoir, one of Edinburghs sources of water - hence my post to both MLN and BORDER. The official extract of his death records that he was crushed by an engine which slipped as it was being lifted on to rails near Stanhope Bridge in the united Parish of Kilbucko, Broughton and Glenholm My understanding is that a small-gauge railway was used in the construction of the earthen dam that formed the Talla Reservoir and it is on this railway that he met his accidental death. My questions to the List Members are: 1. Are there any publication(s) covering the history of the Tala Water Works Construction and where can I purchase them? 2. where can I confirm the site of my g. grandfathers burial? There is a grave stone which I saw in Tweedsmuir Cemetery (Sept/88 - long before I became seriously interested with genealogy!) whose inscription reads: To the memory of the men who died during the progress of the TALLA WATER WORKS 1895-1905 of whom over thirty are interred in this churchyard Erected by their fellow-workmen and others However, there is another gravestone in Cockpen, Churchyard MLN Space no. 56, Section F whose inscription reads In Loving Memory of William T. Arnott also his wife Alison Somerville also their daughter Harriet and their grand-daughter Alison Also their sons George died 11th June 1954 John died 4th Feb. 1959 However, the Cockpen grave site was purchased 1 Nov. 1921 by William ARNOTTs wife. Can I conclude with reasonable certainty that William is buried in the mass grave at Tweedsmuir, or could his remains have been moved to Cockpen at a later date? If so, where would I find this out? I look forward to your input! Jim Arnott Victoria, BC
