Did these customs apply to all the children in a family or primarily to the eldest son and daughter? For example, my name is William. If I had three sons and three daughters and each of them had a son (two sons in the case of the daughters), would all of my sons be expected to name their firstborn son "William" and each of my daughters to name their second son the same? So I would presumably have six grandsons with the name "William"? Bill Pryde Nepean, Ontario, Canada >>> Judith Hoskins <judith@dreemskerry.demon.co.uk> 06/01 9:54 AM >>> The fullest list was from Shellie Kirkham: The Scottish naming pattern is as follows 1st son - father's father 2nd son - mother's father 3rd son - father 4th son - father's oldest brother 5th son - mother's oldest brother or father's second oldest brother 1st daughter - mother's mother 2nd daughter - father's mother 3rd daughter - mother 4th daughter - mother's oldest sister 5th daughter - father's oldest sister or mother's 2nd oldest sister There are exceptions especially if they were the same name such as both father's name and father's father's name are the same then you would just use the next name.
