    3. Hi there, I am currently reading a film covering the Lilliesleaf, Linton, Makerston and Maxton Parish records, Roxburghshire. The occupations for a lot of the men are listed as 'hind'. Also, my 3 x G.Grandfather is listed as a steward at Riddletonhill. Can anyone enlighten as to what these occupations were and can anyone help me find Riddletonhill on the map. Thanking you,Dianne Dixon, New Zealand.

    3. Hi Dianne and Brian! I can't help with the "hind" other than to say it also refers to a red female deer. However my ancestors are from Roxburgh also. My g g g grandfather is George RUTHERFORD who lived in Minto. In the birth record of his daughter, Helen on 3 Jan 1830, he is listed as a "farm steward". I suppose he was connected with one of the larger farms in Minto and as steward was in charge.Perhaps this is the occupation of your ancestor. If I am mistaken, please let me know. 3. Hi Dianne, Riddletonhill is between the A699 and an old dismantled Railway just south of the River Tweed. I would estimate about 10 miles East of Selkirk. Brendan Jones.
