    3. Hi Dianne, A Hind was a skilled farm servant, especially a married man having charge of two horses, i.e. normally a ploughman. It would be expected his wife would also work on the farm, in return for which they would be entitled to live in a farm cottage. A farm Steward was essentially a farm manager, responsible for the day to day running of the estate. Riddletonhill can be seen on the 1863 map of the area on the old-maps web site. Go to http://www.old-maps.co.uk/10roxbu811/HTML/fs_81008001d.htm find Maxton about half way down the left margin of the map, then scroll right and you will come to Riddletonhill which appears to be an estate alongside the railway line.
