Listers, I would appreciate any help to find details about this man. From official records I know:- Thomas Francis CARTMAN, born in the Parish, Town & County of Berwick-upon-Tweed, c June 1823, or 27 May 1821. He joined the Hon. East India Company Artillery [I have his own copy of 'Duplicate of UNLIMITED SERVICE'] 14 November 1846 he signed up at Westminster, Middlesex. He was a healthy labourer. He was not an apprentice, married, nor had been in any militia or other HEIC service. At that time he was 23years 6months old, height 5'6". On 25 January 1847, 2717 Thos Francis CARTMAN, Gunner [age 26yrs] embarked on the 'William Gibson' for India. When he was 32 yrs of age he was promoted to Bombardier. Three years later, still in the same rank, he received 'free discharge' in India. He spent his service life in the MADRAS ARTILLERY. Where did he go? Would someone please 'look-up' birth entries and note if there were brothers and sisters for me? I have checked the IGI & Cd Rom, but would like a verification from church records. I believe he was Church of England. And, has anyone any knowledge about this family, some of whom settled in New Zealand. There is also a connection with a Cartman family who lived in London. I can supply extra material off-line. Perhaps I should add that I am a Lister on INDIA-L-rootsweb.com, They have been helpful, but cannot answer these questions. I look forward to your thoughts and ideas. Yvonne on fitzmray@sme.com.au in cold damp Melbourne, Australia.
