    1. Whithope Hill - Cavers or Roberton?

    3. Marjorie GAVIN has kindly found the following reference in the Hawick Library: "Jean Scott, spouse to James Hapkirk, late tenant in Whithope Hill, died 11th June 1817, aged 76(?) years, son James died 21st February 1807, aged 19 years . John and Adam died in infancy." Can anybody tell me if there is a Whithope Hill in Cavers? Alternatively, is Whithope Knowe and/or the property Whithope (Approx 1.5 miles WSW of Highchesters in Roberton - as shown on the 1863 map) the place referred to? Does anybody know if a property of that name still exists? Is it possible that the deeds dating from the late 18th/early 19th centuries still exist and, if so, where is it likely that could be accessed? Peter Stone stone@futurest.co.za SOUTH AFRICA

    3. Hi Peter, In the 1881 census, the only two Whitehopes are Whitehope cottage at Roberton, apparently a shepherd's cottage. On the other hand, Whitehope, Yarrow, Selkirkshire - head of household John V. Lindsay was a farmer with 2100 acres, 150 arable, employing 6 men and a boy.
