    3. Hi Lesley, >This thread prompts me to mention Rutherford's Southern Counties Register >and Directory. I don't know how often it was originally published, but the >1866 edition was re-published by the Borders Regional Council in 1990 (isbn >0951675605). In it, the publishers mention that their first edition was 10 >years before. Apart from frequent mention of the activities of this Kelso >branch of the firm (and pages of wonderful adverts), it gives gazetteer-type >info on each town and village in Berwickshire, Selkirkshire and Roxburgh, >then adds lovely info such as lists of businesses, registered voters, >amenities (number of shops, library, inns, etc). >I've never seen new it in the shops, but it does turn up in the second hand >book shops. An Australian bookseller sells microfiche versions of the ROX and SEL county sections of the 1866 Rutherfurd's directory - see under Directories on the GENUKI county pages for further details. I haven't seen these but fear that they could miss out the general introductory material and also all the wonderful adverts at the end. However for parish-by-parish entries the fiche are probably more than adequate. The same Australian bookseller also sells microfiche copies of many other old directories, including for the Scottish Borders the 1837 Pigot & Co's directory, and I've bought the fiche of that directory for ROX, BEW, SEL and PEE - very handy they are too, although not as detailed as the later Rutherfurd's 1866 directory. For that I'm clinging on fervently to my 1990 reprint (and to think I once had 2, as my mother subscribed to buy me a present, without knowing I'd subscribed as well!) Viv Dunstan
