Hello Margaret, My wife and I spent several days in the Borders area in 1999 right at the end of May. The weather was very pleasant and everything was a lush green. We spent a total of 29 days on vacation and drove throughout both Scotland and England. I would say that from May 15 forward would give you fairly warm weather and you will miss the big crowds that begin arriving about mid June. You will need to plan to drive or take a bus from one of the major cities because there is no train service to the Borders area. The Borders History Society has a research room in Galashiels. If you are interested I will get you the address. If you want to visit there you will need to plan, because they have limited hours. We drove all over Scotland, except the far north, and the Borders is probably the most beautiful. Rolling hills and green, green, green.
