My grandmother Margaret Ann SMITH was born on 4 November 1859 at Chapel Street Berwick, together with a twin sister Mary Jane. Her mother was Ann nee HINDMARSH and her father was named as William SMITH, Police Officer. In the 1861 Census mother and daughters were still at Chapel Street but the father was elsewhere. The next trace of Margaret was in Walworth, London in 1883 when she married my grandfather William DAVIES, giving her father's name as James SMITH, Police Constable. No marriage certificate has been found. No record of PC William (James) SMITH's service has come to light, though he was not one of the three police constables in Berwick around 1859, nor did he serve in the Metropolitan Police. Nor is anything known of Ann or Mary Jane's whereabouts after 1861, or of Margaret's until her marriage in 1883. If any of these names ring a bell I should be glad to know please or for any ideas for tracing them. Howard Davies
