    1. Re: Clan help
    2. Sorry Joe, The Grahams of the Borders were indeed part of the Graham Clan of the North. Lang Will Graham was banished from the north of Scotland in the early 1500's. He settled on the Borders at Netherby and planted 8 sons on BOTH sides of the Borders in the Debateable Lands. William Cecil, Lord Burghley (1520-98) was the principal adviser to Queen Elizabeth 1, and the leading English statesman of the day. In May 1596 he completed an inventory of sorts of the Grahams. It was called "Pedigree of the Grahams of Esk". The Grahams were the second strongest clan on the Borders next to the Armstrongs and one of the most troublesome. This list and other records would serve as a precursory step in an attempt at annihilation and expulsion of all Grahams in the area around 1605. Those who were not murdered were put into his majesties service or expelled to Ireland, initially in the Roscommon area. Many escaped and returned to their homeland, even though it was illegal to return for a period of 20 years. Many changed the spelling of their names on their return and hence we have amongst other spellings, Maharg which is Graham spelled backwards. Anyone familiar with border history recognizes how convoluted that history is, but for those unfamiliar with it, I would suggest reading Steel Bonnets by George McDonald Fraser. In this Pedigree taken in 1596, Burghley states: "William Grame, alias Longe Will, banished out of Scotland about 80 yeares since, came into England and brought with him eight sonnes, whome he planted neare the said River of Eske........." "By this William does the earles of Mounteth and Montrose in Scotland claime interrest of the service of all the Grames, as discended out of their howses, as the Lord grame which of late lay amongest them for the same purpose, did manifest." Albeit a reiving lifestyle evolved among the people on the Borders caught between warring Scotland and England, these Grahams were and are considered belonging to the Clan Graham. Hope this helps.
