These extremely interesting books were published annually listing ownera and occupiers property (in the early days just the more valuable stuff, in later days all of it). Thye're not easy to find, but Borders Archives were happy to supply me with photocopies of selected years for Whitsome (I picked the census years to try and match the two up) for just the cost of copying and postage so it would be worth asking them.
