Hi all I wonder if anyone can help me? My gt. gt grandfather was Richard Forster or Foster who married Jane Wright in 1842 in Carlisle. On the marriage certificate his father is John Foster described as a farmer. Richard gives his place of birth on the 1851 census as Gillend or Gillenk, Cumberland. Subsequent censuses only give Cumberland as the place of birth. My difficulty is that I cannot trace Gillend (I have not found a farm of this name belonging to a John Foster) and and there are severalJohn Fosters who were farmers in the Carlisle area. Can anyone shine any light onto these people? I'd be grateful for any suggestions that would help me to find the correct John Forster. Thank you. Gill
Hi Gill, Don't know if this will help you or not, but as soon as I read your query "Gilsland" sprang to mind. It is a village near Hadrians Wall in Cumbria. Funnily enough I have a friend who originally came from a farm near Gilsland and she married a Forster - not John though!! Nancy in the Scottish Borders. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Gill Foster" <gillfoster@cegetel.net> To: <BORDER@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, September 16, 2006 3:38 PM Subject: [BORDER] FORSTER/FOSTER > Hi all > > I wonder if anyone can help me? > > My gt. gt grandfather was Richard Forster or Foster who married Jane > Wright in 1842 in Carlisle.
