Hi Valerie, Very grateful. > At Harbottle Presbyterian Church 1737-1754 : > BALONER (?BALMER), Elizabeth; Widow, Jedburgh 1747 (this is exactly > how the > transcription reads) This ties in with Mary, dau Thomas Bamer, christened 10 Feb 1767 at Harbottle Non-Conformist Chapel. Elizabeth may turn out to be the mother of Thomas. I haven't spotted a possible Elizabeth with a specific Jedburgh connection but there are a few of the right vintage born or married in surrounding areas. > At Tower Hill Chapel, Wooler, 1843-1860 : > Jane BALMER, Caddington, Hawick 1859 This one is new to me, at least in Wooler. I haven't found Caddington yet - it's obviously not the one in Buckinghamshire! > Not a sausage for WAITE but at Clavering Place, Newcastle 1804-1855 and > Westmoreland Road, Newcastle 1855-1860 there is this entry : > David "WIGHT", Newcastle, Chirnside 1839 > (the inverted commas are exactly how it appears in the transcript and > I'm > not sure what they imply, I just leave it to you to judge) Very possibly a Waite and possibly my mother's branch. There are still relations in Chirnside and David occurs in the family. [There could be a tortuous dialect reason for the Wight spelling. If the name was passed verbally from Geordie A to Geordie B, B may have assumed it was spelt as in weight. He may then have pronounced it as in 'hiivy wite' (= heavy weight), to be recorded by Person C.] The census extracts will be very helpful and I'll get onto them as soon as possible. Kindest regards. Jim (10 degrees here, light drizzle at times, very pleasant for February)
