Chruch records generally 9but not always) contain the names of the bride and groom, and sometimes where they were living (e.g. John Brown of the parish of Whatever, and Jane White of this Parish). Irrgegular marriages are more of a problem - some of the men carrying them out kept registers, others didn't. Some registers have survivied - for example the Scottish Genealogy Society sells copies of a register from Lamberton Toll. Entried show the names of the bride, groom and witness and sometimes where they were from. Irreg marriages could have happened at any of the Border crossings - bridges, tolls, etc, so you'd have to be lucky to find the,.
