HI I was wondering if anyone could help. Me and a couple of other researchers are trying to piece together the Romaines, or Romanis or Romanes family.(So far I have about 35 variants on the name but those are the most common ones) We are stuck at a particular point because some church records were burnt (Kirknewton) and so baptism records which would help us are missing. We haven't given up though and are trying through other methods to try and trace the parents of various different sections of the family. It is a process of elimination really and can be quite frustrating. The family came from all over the borders on both sides although they predominate in certain areas. One of the things I have been told is that there are quite a few Romanis or Romaines burials and monumental inscriptions in Lauder and I was wondering if anyone had a record of them which would save me a long trip up there to have a look. Also, if anyone is researching that name, then I have an enormous database and 6 or 7 files full of stuff that I have accumulated over the years referring to the name and would be more than willing to share it with anyone. Thanks very much for your help Mandy Buchanan
Mandy, Have you tried to trace them through Bishop Transcripts, the Borer FHS or Northumberland Record office may be able to help you with the BTs and also with possible MI transcripts. An index to Kirknewton Bap, Mar and Bur was produced by Original Indexes and is now available from NDFHS who took over the OI material. It covers 1813- 1839. Hope this helps.
