Hi Yes please Carmen that would be fantastic - even if it only makes something impossible - that helps all the same. Thank You. Unfortunately yes Derek I have tried to do the BT's - we are lucky that the library here has quite a bit of stuff like that but unfortunately the baptisms and marriages that I need are from just before that and only fragments of the papers exist - very few of which are even guessable. I am lucky in that the family appear to have travelled about quite a bit - they were in Kelso and Lauder and Yetholm. I have one in Kelso in the Lieutenancy book 1799 which is a William Romanis - smith in Kelso (page 129) but he does not appear in any of the other stuff - wish he had been a bit more bolshy then he might have warranted a mention in the tellings off in other parts of the book. I don't know who he is but is most likely connected to the Simon Romanis and Mary Lang or Lamb who are in that area at the time. I have checked the Yetholm parish chest papers that are available in the National Archives Building in Edinburgh and came up with a couple of things which proves that they were about occasionally in that area. I have not had a chance to check the Kelso or Lauder areas yet but have it on my list of things to do. Thanks again for any contributions. Ideas about how to go about things are great, no matter how simple it may seem, I might not have thought of it. Cheers Mandy Buchanan

If that is the case (and I may well be wrong about that), have you checked some of the postings having to do with the romani tribes? There are some people following them...just a thought, which may be discardable, and may be one you've already followed up.
