    3. The use of the letters i and j actually mean the same. The usage for 1,2,3,4, was i, then ij, then iij, then iv. The pounds shillings and pence for centuries was Li (probably what you read as b) s was shillings, and d. was pence. As this goes back to Roman times, the d. meant denarius (a penny); but Li meant Livre, the French for pound. The shilling name was imported from England, so the whole set is an international muddle!
