Arthur, I have a similar problem, as I traced my TEMPLE's to Camphouse / Camptown about 1800 and found their children were later using Blackfriars Free Church of Scotland at Jedburgh. A trip up to Edinburgh to view the records of this church for the critical (to me) period 1800 to 1810 only resulted in finding there was a complete gap in the church records for those years. The archivist that helped me said he knew of no reason why there was a gap in the records for that period, since the records restarted again after 1810. Sod's law I guess.
