I would appreciate help from SKS out there in locating the birthplace of my g. g. grandfather Robert COSSAR, a tailor by trade.. In the 1881 Census, he was living with his 2nd wife, Isabella DOWNIE and children John, James, Maggie Ann and Robert at 22 Bridge St. in Melrose, Selkirk. In this Census entry he claims to have been born abt. 1821 in Ladykirk Parish, Berwick. However, an exhaustive search of the OPR for Ladykirk could not find an entry for his birth. As directed by other sources of information, I did find births of sons Thomas (18 Apr. 1839) and Robert (29 Oct. 1840) to Robert COSSAR and his 1st wife Isabella ROBERTSON in the OPR of the neighbouring parish of Edrom, Bew. By 1849 Robert and 1st wife Isabella ROBERTSON had moved to Glasgow where they had their 6th and last child, my g. grandmother Isabella Margaret Jane COSSAR b. 18 Nov. 1849 at Glasgow, Lks. (IOPRS Frame 6123). However, I find the prospect of searching the 1851 Glasgow Census a bit daunting! By 1859, RobertÂ’s 1st wife had died and he had a son, Thomas, on July 28th of that year, by his second wife Isabella DOWNIE in Edrom, Bew. So if someone has access to the 1861 Census of that Parish, I would appreciate a Look-up to see if you can find him there, and pass along the information on WHERE HE CLAIMS TO HAVE BEEN BORN.
