    3. Having noticed the Buccleuch thread, I was wondering if anyone knows if any Estate Records exist and how one would go about accessing them? I have an ancestor ,Thomas FORSTER, who was a water bailif for the Duke in the 1870 / 80's. Thank you. Debora in Texas.

    3. Like Debora, I'd be interested in knowing if the Borders Archive in Selkirk holds estate records. I'm particularly interested in Mordington House in Berwickshire. We will be in Scotland in August and would be able to visit Selkirk. It would be best to email Selkirk and the NAS in advance and check what is where. Do note that many families still retain their own records. 3. Hi Folks, My ancestors were tennants of a mill in Kirkliston, West Lothian in the 1850's and 60's on the estate of the Hogs of New Liston. Although the records are still with the family, the NAS has indexes to them and I was able to identify particular bundles that might have been relevant. In these cases the NAS can either arrange for the records to be brought to Register House to be seen, or as in my case, to arrange an introduction to the family in question. I was invited to New Liston and spent a very pleasant day searching, assisted by the head of the family, in his 80's. Unfortunately, although we found mention of the tenants before and after mine, there was no mention of the Laings! So, ask NAS; they will probably be aware of what exists. Stuart.
