Hi Gary I looked back at early emails to the D&G list and see that you have already been down the route of searching for police records. A researcher told you that all the records had been sent to a central repository and lost. I thought this was a bit sweeping so I searched the NRA database and found: GB/NNAF/O45863 Dumfries police Dumfries, Dumfriesshire 1811-1970 : commissioners of police and police committee minutes, accounts Dumfries and Galloway Archives Reference : WD3/1-11;WA4/1-5;RE3/16-24 NRA 31757 Dumfries 1 record noted. does not compute! quite apart from the committee records, local police turn up in newspaper accounts, in directories etc. A Superintendent of Police was an important guy in a small community. He would probably been a member of other things - a church elder being the most obvious. I did a little bit of work on this subject last year and suspect he might have been appointed when the county force was formed in which case the chances of a mention in the newspapers or in the county council records would also be high.
