Just had a look at a couple of mid 19thC almanacs and found some senior police officers mentioned - in one case a Superindendent of Police - sadly not yours. This was an Edinburgh almanac without much info for the western counties. Again, makes me wonder if the researcher you mention could have dug a little deeper!!
