I'm researching my 3x great grandfather Alexander MORTON (a gardener) and his wife Margaret GOWAN/COWAN (daughter of Charles, a weaver). They married at Edinburgh, St Cuthbert's in 1806 but were in the area around Jedburgh and Crailing from then until around 1812. In 1812/1813 they moved to Alnwick, Northumberland where I believe Alexander worked for Henry Collingwood Selby Esq. They later moved to Causey Park, Northumberland then Newcastle upon Tyne. They had children baptised: David (at Crailing, 1805 or possibly 1806), Mary (at Crailing, 1811), Henry Collingwood Selby (at Alnwick, 1813) and Margaret (at Alnwick, 1815). The Scottish OPR index wrongly lists David and Mary under the surname MARTON, but the registers clearly show the name as MORTON. The OPR index also lists the baptism at Jedburgh of John MARTIN, son of Alexander MARTIN and Margaret GOWAN - they may be "my" family but I haven't been able to check the original register yet. I'd love to hear from anyone with MORTON connections on either side of the border. Over the last few years I've been compiling a database of MORTONs in Northumberland (I'm now going to extend it to South-east Scotland) and I'd be happy to search it for anyone. Additional entries from your family histories would also be most welcome. Can anyone provide me with further information on Crailing? GENUKI gives a little, but I'd like to know who the major land-owners were? Which families were likely to have employed a gardener in the early days of the 19th century. Neil Morton
