Can I ask a huge favour from anyone who has access to a census for 1861? I am searching for a Thomas RUNCIMAN who would be listed as a widower by then. He may be living with his daughter Catherine and her family- she married Ninian CARRE and had six children all christened in Edrom, Berwick (last one was christened in 1854 in Edrom). Or he could have been living with his daughter Jean who married George SMITH in Chirnside, Berwick on 30-5-1844. Jean and George were still in Chirnside on the 1881 census. Thomas RUNCIMAN would have been about 70 at the time of the census. I think he would be in the Berwickshire area and more than likely in Chirnside or near Edrom if that's where his children were living. Please, please, please help.... I don't know where else to turn! If anyone comes accross any RUNCIMAN's in their own searches I would love to hear about it. The name changes spelling frequently so any variation would be welcomed also. Thank you very much to all those who have helped out so far. Best of luck, Alethea.
Can anyone tell me exactly where Dykehead is please? It appears to be in Hutton parish but I would like to know the exact spot. Is it the name of a farm? WILLIAM RENTON 1727-1772 born Paxton Hutton Berwickshire. On his marriage proclamation in 1749 in the Hutton Kirk Sessions he is shown as being Tenant in Paxton and up to when the last child was born in 1767 he has been consistently shown as Tenant in Paxton. The Hutton Parish Kirk Sessions show a mortcloth purchased for him in Oct 1782. In the MIs for the Old Graveyard at Fishwick there is a stone bearing the inscription - Erected in memory of William Renton late tenant in Dykehead who died 12 Oct 1782 aged 55 years Any information about Dykehead would be appreciated.
