Hello I am new to the list, so I thought I would post my interests and see if anyone out there has any in common. I have ancestors listed getting married there in 1855 they were Michael Martin married Margaret Burk (Burke) their parents were Andrew Martin and Mary Morrey Richard Burk and Ann Shandley both parents were originally form Ireland, does anyone know if Galashiels was predominantly Irish decent? Hope someone recognizes someone, would be good to hear from someone. Regards Mary Walker
Hi Mary, I don't think that Gala has a high population of Irish descent. I was certainly not aware of it growing up there, in fact there were probably more people of Polish/Ukranian families than Irish. Hower, it is likely that they came to the Borders to work in the woolen mills which were expanding rapidly at that time Regards Karen in Cheshire, UK mcwalker wrote: > > Hello I am new to the list, so I thought I would post my interests and > see if anyone out there has any in common. > I have ancestors listed getting married there in 1855 they were > Michael Martin married Margaret Burk (Burke) their parents were > Andrew Martin and Mary Morrey > Richard Burk and Ann Shandley > > both parents were originally form Ireland, does anyone know if > Galashiels was predominantly Irish decent? > > Hope someone recognizes someone, would be good to hear from someone. > Regards Mary Walker
