We have a dead end in one of the research lines that has only a reference in the census to a birthplace of Scotland. The name recorded is spelled as PITTILLO and PITTILLA but in IGI appears to be grouped at times with PITLOH The relevant ancestor had the forename Gideon and this appears to be a recurring name around Harbottle in Northumberland and in Presbyterian records. There is a christening that we read today in the Harbottle transcript of a grandchild to a John PITLOH where he is described as a native of Jedburgh. Whether co-incidence or otherwise there is a Gideon in IGI with a Jedburgh christening in 1714 although much too early for the 1808 birth of my Gideon. Our enquiry of the list is whether anyone has come across the forename/surname combination Gideon Pittillo [and variations] or can tell us if there are substantial gaps in baptismal/christening records in IGI or other publications for Jedburgh and that area in south and south west Roxburgh?
