Hi Again Could someone who has the necessary Monumental Inscriptions of Berwickshire please check for me in Preston how many Moffats are listed there. I'm aware of this stone <http://roger.lisaandroger.com/showmedia.php? mediaID=289&medialinkID=1162> which is my great great great grandfather and mother - George Moffat and Isabel(la) Clark I didn't see any others when I looked there on two previous visits (although both times I've been up on the hill there it's been raining), but I'm curious as to why someone who died in Coldingham was buried in Preston - maybe others of his family are there? I'm stumped trying to find George Moffat's parents. The George Moffat I thought he was (ie I had parents, a tombstone for them in Swinton etc) turns out to have died Single in 1856. I'd love to hear from anyone else researching Moffat in the Berwickshire/Roxburghshire area too. I wrote the Scottish Genealogical Society a few days ago to ask about Volume 1 seemingly not being for sale, but no reply so far. Thanks for any assists. Roger

Over the years I have received info regarding this subject . A small group of people from Norham /Horncliff established a church , on Church St.in Berwick upon Tweed . I am sorry to say that this building was destroyed , some time in the past The Minister in the early 1880s was a Mr . Young IN that era in Horndean was a Mr.Lee. Hi folks, i've come across a list of 'Ministers who gave their adhesion to the Free Presbyterian Church', 31 May 1843. it's a great long list, not in alphabetical order unfortunately, but it does seem to be listed, if somewhat casually, in districts. There are a number from the Borders area. I just wish there was somewhere i could post the whole list, so that anyone could consult it at will, but i am prepared to do lookups. Though there isn't a lot of detail, the list indicates: 1] where they're based at the time, & 2] those who are a] quoad sacra ministers; b] assistants & successors; c] ministers of parliamentary churches; d] ministers without charges & e] professors. There are others who aren't so 'labelled' so i cannot answer for them. Hello . Yes, its the Scottish Genealogy Society`s publication. There is another Moffat headstone, It says, By George Moffat , tenant in Mount pleasant, wife Margaret Patteson, 11/9/1851, 51 years, above George Moffat, 8/5/1867, 65 years, son John, 27/10/75, 50 years, and his wife, Jane Hogg died at Greenlaw 29/1/1905, aged 81 years. After a brain addled day and seeing these responses this morning I realise I have this other George too, and if I'd been thinking more clearly would have sent this link along <http://roger.lisaandroger.com/headstones.php? country=Scotland&state=Berwickshire&county=Swinton&tree=> which shows the 3 stones (one of them is double sided leading to the 4 photos) of Moffats I have from the Swinton Churchyard. So it seems that George Moffat who died 1856 and was buried in Swinton Churchyard doesn't have a stone. > This book is Volume 1 of three for Border Parishes all for pre 1855 > but there are many, many later dates in them. On this page here http://www.scotsgenealogy.com/acatalog/Berwickshire_MI.html it doesn't seem to show the Volume 1. Are the individual parishes listed there the contents of Volume 1? Or is it that Volume 1 is now out of print and so not listed for sale perhaps? I'm in Michigan, USA and not sure just which libraries in this region might have these books. Thanks Roger

Hi Does anyone know if there was a publication of Swinton Monumental Inscriptions? I have a transcript of a stone whose note said it came from such a publication by the Borders Family History Society, but their web site doesn't offer a book with the Swinton MIs in it? In case someone does have such a book, would you mind please looking for George Moffat, died 1856. According to his death register entry he was buried in the Swinton Churchyard? I'm aware of these two: John Moffat and Margaret Moffat, John Moffat and Jane Bogue, Betty, William and John all on one stone http://roger.lisaandroger.com/showmedia.php?mediaID=282&medialinkID=1494 and http://roger.lisaandroger.com/showmedia.php?mediaID=283&medialinkID=1147 William Moffat with Catherine Young and Isabella Smith on another stone http://roger.lisaandroger.com/showmedia.php?mediaID=277&medialinkID=1126 Are there any other Moffats listed there? Thanks Roger

Hello Victoria, I don't know if there was any research done on the Bennet name but in some of the M.Is for Roxburghshire there are 28 headstones for Bennet & for Berwickshire there are 9. Is there anyone in particular you are trying to find? Best wishes Carmel
